YOU. ARE. KIDDING. ME. You couldn’t have picked James Franco, or at least someone with actual TALENT?

    • whatevs

How would James Franco be a better choice? One critically acclaimed movie in his whole life and you think he’s deserving of it?

      • Honest Man

Do you mean 127 Hours or Milk or Spider-Man 1&2 or Howl or . . .

      • gah

        or General Hospital!

      • nodnarb

James Franco was in 4 movies this year, and the most recent may land him an Oscar nom. Not saying he deserves Entertainer of the Year. Just pointing it out.

      • whatevs

Ok, I meant critically acclaimed movie in which he’s the star. I didn’t point that out earlier.

I know he may get an Oscar nom, but he’s certainly not EOTY material either.

  • Torrence5

Can’t think of a better choice. She proved her popularity with the the million plus first week sales of her new CD & her Grammy wins in February add critical acclaim to her credits. Plus, she is likeable. So good for her & all the millions of fans who like her.

    • Bryan

Taylor SUCKS! She cannot even sing on key! Terrible Choice! Eminem and Gaga were robbed!

      • @Bryan

I understand Gaga, but not Eminem!

      • Taryn

I completely understand why all 3 artists are extremely popular. They each hit their demographic and keep it. That’s a formula that all artists try to figure out, but many never seem to reach.

    • Patrick

Taylor’s the youngest grammy best album winner of all time and she’s the first country solo act to do it too. Ain’t that a trip? She deserved this pick by EW for sure.

  • David

Katy Perry deserved that cover way more.
    Or even the Glee cast

    • Kristina

      Katy Perry….? Really?

    • u

Like Katy Perry would be a better choice? Please.

    • the other David

Sorry, which act — GLEE or K. Perry — sold over million copies of an album in its first week? Which one won the Album of the Year Grammy?

  • racefan111

Chill out folks…its “Entertainer of the Year”, not a Nobel Prize.

    • Alex

It’s not the Razzies either, dumbass.

    • Seraphina CloudBurst

Taylor’s highly involved in the charitable community so someday she just may well win that Nobel Peace prize and I’m sure all the same complainers and Veruca Salt whiners will cut her down for that too. Yes, some things never change.
      *o*

  • Rizer

This on top of the Twilight covers suggests that EW is really gunning for those teen girl readers. Questionable decision considering how fickle that audience is. One day it’s Jo Bros, the next it’s Bieber…

    • Seraphina CloudBurst

Fickle? Taylor has been around for 4 years now. That’s more staying power than any teen sensation you can name over the past 2 decades. hehehehe Some are really off the deep end. :Q

      • u

“Taylor has been around for 4 years now. That’s more staying power than any teen sensation you can name over the past 2 decades. hehehehe Some are really off the deep end. ”

New Kids On The Block – Dominant years were ’88-92 (four years)

Backstreet Boys – Dominant years were ’97-01 (four years)

N*Sync- Dominant years were ’98-02 (again, four years)

        Britney Spears- ’98- PRESENT (that’s 12 years)

Christina Aguilera- ’99 -PRESENT (and no, one failed album out of three successful ones doesn’t mean that her career’s over)

        Miley Cyrus- ’06- PRESENT

Really Seraphina, how old are you? You obviously must have been born in the last decade to truly think that there haven’t been any teen sensations with careers lasting 4 years or longer.

      • Patrick

None of them acts wrote a whole album by their lonesome like what Taylor has done with Speak Now. For that alone and selling so much more than a million gets her the entertainment of the year winner’s trophy damn straight.

      • Wuggie

“u”, interesting list. Now how many on it are young women who write all their own material? How many of them won the Grammy for Album of the Year?
And the biggest flaw in your logic:
Taylor is not some Disney or Nickelodeon TV product who exploded from the gate on a wave of hype, then saw their popularity steadily decrease(as happened to Britney whose first album sold 13M copies in the US, then dropped down to 10 M, then less than 5 M for her 3rd).
Taylor has gone the other way. Her first week sales are instructive: her debut sold a mere 39,000, her second nearly 600,000 and her third went well-over a million.
        Taylor’s only getting started. Sorry.

  • Zack

Yea she’s only written, played and sung her own songs since she was 14, but screw her she has no talent!

WE SHOULD TAKE KATY PERRY INSTEAD!

    You people are morons.

    • Robert

Who cares if Tonedeaf Taylor writes her own songs? They are all the same bubble gum tween pop drivel! Every song is about boys and sounds exactly the same! Plus, she cannot even sing! So sick of everything about her. How much longer will she be shoved down our throats? Note to EW: Adults to not want to read about Taylor! UGH. Epic Fail.

      • bootsycolumbia

Please, let’s retire the term epic fail. I agree with your comments, but that expression makes me want to defend Taylor just to p!ss you off.

      • Ashley

Tied Together With a Smile -written about a friend who had a low self esteem.
Best Day- Written about/for her mom.
Never Grow Up- Written about childhood. Could partly be for her brother.
Just some examples that not all of her songs are about boys. Research before making accusations. :)

      • Kenley

        Where’s your alleycat persona Robert?

        @@

    • Kate

Who cares ? Yes she writes her own songs and she is talented in that aspect but, she can’t carry a tune to save her life. Girls like her because she sings about boys, fairtales, & princesses but, they all sound the same. She is 21 now time for her to grow up!! I potty any guy who dates her! Bashing people who did you wrong is something a 14 old might write but it’s immature & wrong for a 21 year old adult. It’s not cute anymore. There are more deserving people for EW entertainer of the year.

      • one

Yeah, because writing songs about homeless orphans in Haiti is more genuine than songs about her personal life. Most songs are about women/love anyway.
People relate to her songs. It’s too bad she doesn’t do drugs or drink because those songs would be so much more mature.

      • Kenley

“I potty any guys who dates her” ? Seriously Kate stop posting.

        @@

      • LMAO

lol her songs are about fairytales and princesses..lol you clearly have no idea about her songs

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

No other teen sensation has done what Taylor has done in the short amount of time that she’s been doing it. She’s not all about boys, fairytale princesses, and all that you are wailing about Kate. You’re just looking at the surface like most complainers without really listening to all her songs from all 3 of her albums. Clueless complainers. That about says it all. :(

  • JX

    Lol at all the haters!

Christopher Nolan? Really? On the strength of his one sole movie which made a big name this year? Who’s Jeff Bridges? Who’s Matt Weiner?

Miss Swift has been the talk of the town since she won AoTY at the Grammies last year and she’s a sales force to be reckoned with, moving 1m units in her debut sales week, feats that singers with twice her age and experience have failed to do.

This title is more than well-deserved. Props, EW!

    • tracy bluth

“Who’s Jeff Bridges”? You can’t be serious.

      • JX

Dear Tracy Bluth, remember to pick up a prescription for your myopia.

Americans aren’t the only ones reading this site. I’m from Singapore, do you think I really know who his obscure ass is?

Miss Swift, on the other hand, has achieved international recognition, not just in North America, but also all over Southeast Asia. In fact, she’s making her first stop here for her Speak Now tour.

        I rest my case.

      • Lisa Simpson

@JX – Jeff Bridges has a long, distinguished career in motion pictures that was capped this year by winning the Oscar for Best Actor (after having receieved several nominations in his career). He is known internationally and will be remembered long after the Taylor Swifts and Justin Biebers and other teen flavors are long forgotten.

      • @JX

Huh. I would have thought “Starman” would have been HUGE in Singapore.

      • Kenneth E. Bunkport III

So, JX, what you’re saying is that Singaporeans (?) have crappy taste in music AND movies. Duly noted.

      • Krystal

Seriously. Jeff Bridges is only one of the most amazing actors of our time. The Dude abides. Always.

      • Kenley

I’m 23 and I was born in the year that Tiffany and Debbie Gibson were the “it” girls of the music scene. Both of them added together didn’t have 1/10th the impact that Taylor has done for herself and yet both of those women are still being talked about today. All of you saying that Taylor Swift will be a name that is forgotten are truly delusional beyond reproach. Even if Taylor stops writing and singing immediately, she has already made such an impact in American music history, she will “never” be forgotten. Elvis as the King of Music, never even won Album of the Year. So to say something that even I know is stupid, “Taylor is greater than Elvis because she won an Album of the Year Grammy and he didn’t”, so there. I know how ridiculous that sounds. Do all of you pissing on Taylor know how ridiculous you sound when you say she will be forgotten?

        @@ @@ @@ @@

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

Most great artists of the past have never won that prestigious Album Of The Year grammy award, yet Taylor did it with her 2nd album. She is truly an outstanding songwriter and storyteller and at least her fellow artists know and appreciate her contribution to music. It’s the complainers out there that don’t realise how much of an impact Taylor has made with her songwriting. She’s the youngest winner of Songwriter Of The Year for goodness sakes and for good reason. Whiners will need to deal with her prominence I guess hehehehehe.
        :)

    • Karate Pants

      “Who’s Matt Weiner”?!?!? BLASPHEMY! heh

Is he a distant relative of all of you “Whiners” hehehehe *O*

    • Molly

Taylor is the “talk of the town alright.” lol She is the butt of every joke in my circle of friends. Everyone over 25 I know cannot stand her tonedeaf, terrible voice and bubble gum pop teen drivel songs about boys. Her smug face and squinty eyes just annoy me too, as well as her fake shock everytime she wins an award. She is the most over-rated artist in the history of music, and I find nothing “entertaining” about her hair thrashing and off key singing. She is no better then Miley Cyrus, who can at least hold a note on occasion.

      • LMAO

lol your hilarious girl, everyone over 25 can’t stand her??? you obviously haven’t seen her sold out concerts lol don’t you know that her concerts are consists of a wide range of fans? from 8-80 years okd, i’m not kidding cause i’ve seen her diverse fans.

and sorry i know people over 25 who adores her. ex: all of my aunts and uncles plus my office mates and friends.

        put your hate else where!

      • wuggie

        Multiple Choice Test
        Do you think Molly is:
        A) The girl Taylor kept beating out for the lead in all those theater productions back in elementary school?
B)The RCA Development person who wouldn’t let Taylor record, watched her walk out to join the then non-entity Big Machine label, and thus got fired shortly thereafter?
        C) Camilla Belle?
        D) Carrie Underwood’s jealous marketing staff?
        E0 Kanye West
        E) Just some random neurotic?

    • Honest Man

      @JX

If you think that Jeff Bridges is obscure, bask in the fact that most people can’t find Singapore on a map. Bridges has done in the neighborhood of 70 movies. He’s in Iron Man. He’s in Tron. He is THE DUDE. He’s won the Oscar, the Golden Globe, and more. Obscure? What a joke.

      • @Honest Man

You’re just proving his point on American myopia.
        Ignorance shouldn’t bring you pride.

      • JX

So, pray tell, why hasn’t he managed to win Entertainer of the Year on this site a single time in this long and illustrious career of his spanning 52 years? Joke’s on you, I’m afraid.

And Taylor’s won Grammies, CMAs, AMAs, the musical equivalents of these acting accolades you mention. He may be THE DUDE, but she’s THE ENTERTAINER OF 2010.

You may not like it, but Taylor Swift is simply more relevant and well-known to the younger generation and the bulk of EW’s readers than Jeff Bridges, as talented a veteran actor as he may be.

      • nodnarb

Well, for starters, this site is not 52 years old.

      • Lisa Simpson

The Grammies, the AMAs, and the CMAs may be their industry equivalents of the Oscars, but they are way down on the prestige scale. They give awards to pretty much anybody (and they have so many cateogries almost everyone wins one). I just don’t see how relevant Taylor Swift is. She does the vanilla same song over and over again, and really has no real artistic integrity. She’s fine for putting out mindless tween pop, but she has very little appeal to anyone out of high school.

      • Kristina

        Grammys. Just Grammys.

      • u

        @JX:

Twilight is more well-known than Jeff Bridges to teenagers. Do you think in 20 years’ time, Twilight and Taylor will be as remembered as Jeff Bridges? Yeah, exactly. There’s flavor of the moment, and then there’s durability. Jeff has it, Taylor doesn’t.

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

I predict Taylor will write a song for a movie someday in the near future and win that prestigious Golden Globe, Academy award, and everything else. She’s proven you complainers so so wrong already. Remember many of you that said that she’d never EVER win a Grammy or CMA award or AMA award? Yeah so she’s made history winning ALL OF THEM and doing so in convincing fashion that no one else has done previously. Get over the hate complainers, Taylor’s here to stay for the long run. Go hide under your rocks if you don’t want to hear about her. hehehehe

        :)

    • Alex

      You’re a f’in retard.

  • Kanye

    Aw hell no!!!

    • Seraphina CloudBurst

Golddigger complainers are off limits on this prestigious story about Taylor big win. Doesn’t she have a restraining order against you? hehehehe

      *0*

  • Lisa Simpson

And EW’s slide into becoming Tiger Beat continues.

    • BG 17

…aaaww, that was going to be my reply…

  • Karate Pants

My first reaction was, okay, another EW issue goes face-down on the coffee table. I am not a fan.
BUT – to be fair – “Entertainer of the Year” is NOT singer of the year, best live performer, or any of that. To me, it’s more indicative of commercial success, which she has certainly had this year.

    • nodnarb

Hmm, you do make a good point. I guess my position would be that I’d rather it be an editorial decision (like TIME’s Person of the Year) than based on commercial success.

      • Karate Pants

Sure, I would agree. But – at least in the past few years – EW has embraced commercial successes over talent or anything else, and this is completely in line with that.
It also reinforces my guess that she will be Baba Wawa’s #1 most fascinating person. (shudders return)

      • nodnarb

        Yeh, that sounds about right.

      • Mr. Holloway

        KP-

You make excellent points about WHY Taylor Swift was EW’s pick (the new emphasis on commercial success over actual talent).

It’s just kind of a bummer for people who’ve been reading this magazine since the early 90′s and have seen a clear and distinct shift towards covering what’s commercially successful over covering something that might be more interesting, but not as well known.

Just seems like, more than ever, EW is more interested in jumping along with what’s already super popular than they are in blazing bold trails. (I realize things are tough from a business perspective, and I undestand why that’s happening, but stuff like this is still kind of a letdown.)

      • Karate Pants

Totally agree, Mr. Holloway. I didn’t post it, but if you looked at the run-down of their “Entertainers of the Year” for the 90′s decade, I feel like they did a MUCH better job representing the influential/talented/popular/TRULY entertaining people, celebrities that really shined in their work.
The 2000′s, on the other hand, is mostly commercial success, flavor-of-the-moment type stuff. Disappointing indeed.

    • Lisa Simpson

I see your point, but I think she’s more in the most overexposed category. If EW wants to be taken seriously (and I’m not sure it does anymore), it will balance critical and commercial success in its choices. They are seriously alienating readers over the age of 16 with their coverage the past few years. I’ve got my renewal notice and am seriously considering whether or not to continue.

      • bootsycolumbia

I canceled my subscription almost a year ago (I got tired of the endless Twilight covers), and now I just buy whatever copy I want to read off the newsstand.

    • Krista

Karate Pants- I agree. Btw, who did they put on the cover last year?? They are never going to please everyone.

      • Karate Pants

I was curious, so I looked it up. Here’s their “Entertainers of the Year” for the decade:
        2000 Russell Crowe
        2001 Nicole Kidman
        2002 Denzel Washington
        2003 cast of LOTR
        2004 John Stewart
        2005 cast of Lost
        2006 cast of Grey’s Anatomy
        2007 J.K. Rowling
        2008 Robert Downey, Jr
        2009 Sandra Bullock
See? Years of commercially successful people with a few true talents mixed in.

      • tracy bluth

Besides the cast of Grey’s Anatomy that’s actually not a bad list.

      • Lisa Simpson

I agree, Tracy (especially with the Grey’s comment – never understood that show’s appeal). I’m not a fan of Nicole Kidman, but she was big that year and in an artistically relevant way, doing very different roles and stretching herself as an actress.

      • Kenley

So that’s it Lisa. I get it now. Seeing some of your previous posts, it’s obvious you have an objection against tall beautiful women such as Nicole and Taylor.

I may cancel my subscription now. EW has usually been on point, but this shoving Tonedeaf Taylor down my throat when she cannot even sing on key is getting on my LAST nerve. Enough already! Eminem and Gaga buried Taylor this year, and deservedly so! Even Carrie Underwood had a better year then Taylor, as she had 3 Number 1 hits, had a huge 100 city tour, and sold 2 million albums. Well, I think that this is a great pick. If you hate Taylor Swift, go yell at her legion of fans. EW is supposed to pick someone who had a large impact on the entertainment industry. So it’s not their fault that you don’t like the person that did that.

    • LMAO

THANK YOU FOR STATING THE FACTS!

  • Alleycat

EPIC FAIL! Taylor cannot even sing on key, and yet you give her this honor over much more deserving artists like Eminem, Lady Gaga, and Carrie Underwood?? Carrie Underwood sold 2x platinum this year, had 3 number 1 hits (2 more then tonedeaf Taylor!), and toured over 100 cities in sold out shows, to critically acclaimed reviews. How on earth can you keep rewarding this over-rated, over-rexposed tonedeaf pop tart, who is about as “country” as Snoop Dog? I may cancel my subscription to EW over this.

    • one

Your argument is that she doesn’t deserve the title cause she’s tone deaf?
Bob Dylan can’t sing crap either.

      • u

Yes, but he compensated for his lack of singing ability by writing great, unique songs that everyone can relate to and that stand the test of time in terms of relevance. If you think Taylor is on par with him as a songwriter, then you my friend need to get your head checked.

      • one

Argument was that she doesn’t deserve it because she’s tone deaf. Alleycat brought up her singing several times in her post. That’s all I’m replying to. I don’t believe she’s tone deaf. I know Bob Dylan’s lyrics are damn good, but his singing is bad.

How can you keep hating when three albums are over 1 mill units. That is over 100Mill..wake up and stop hating…she sings and plays guitar..that is talent that will never go away..people like britt spears danced, had shock value and lip synced… Taylor will be making money for a long long time…She might be the highest grossing sales by a female ever when all is said and done…but Lets go with your opinion..Einstein…:)

      • Seraphina CloudBurst

That is a lie. Carrie has not sold 2x platinum with her old album from last year yet. She’s sold a little over 1,800,000 in nearly 14 months of sales and Taylor has already passed her up last week in only 5 weeks of selling Speak Now and she’s only a couple thousand from 2 million actually sold. If she did so great touring and all that how come she only earned only 1/4th of what Taylor earned in the past year? hehehehe liar and complainer too.

Taylor sells out her personal life for album sales and press. She would sell her own mother down the river if it sold her more albums. She is a manipulative, over-rated tonedeaf poptart who is about as country as Diddy. I pity Jake as he will be in all the songs on her next album after he dumps her. He is a nice guy but how stupid to date someone as toxic and self-absorbed as Taylor, who uses men for song material. She is so arrogant and annoying. Not even very talented except at self-promotion and marketing herself.

        Ditto.

Luddite, if you’re so bored with Swift then find something POSITIVE to talk about — someone who doesn’t “bore” you. Or do you just prefer being negative?
EW reports on the entertainment business. In an economy where major concert tours are going belly up due to poor gates … where no album has debuted with a million copies sold in years (and the overwhelming opinion on these very pages was that NO ONE could do it)…and then Taylor comes along selling out every show in minutes (even giant stadiums) and zipping past the opening week million mark in album sales … well, that’s NEWS. ERW is supposed to print NEWS! Get it! So sorry you’re bored.
In any event, swelling these pages with a record number of comments won’t make stories about Swift disappear; instead, it will encourage MORE of them. So, on behalf of Swift fans, we thank you. (By the way … although your comments do not approach the moronic logic of haters like Michael (above),you DO sound a LITTLE bit jealous.)
EW is in the business of readership. Love Taylor, hate her, EW doesn’t care! They’re just happy you’re reading their stories.

Some “habitual” posters like ‘u’ and many others are always on Taylor’s blogs and they cannot stay away from her stories if their lives actually depended on it. They’re drawn like little insects to the light. They are the insects and Taylor is the light. What motivates them to post about someone they obviously “seem” to dislike so much is something that needs analytical therapy. It takes so much to gather so much inside hate and they show it every time a Taylor blog appears. It’s an extremely sad situation really.

Luddite sweetie, if you were really that bored with Taylor you wouldn’t have read this story and responded to it. Complainers are verging beyond the pathetic realm now. Ooopsie!
