Christian Bale: The hero Batman deserved and needed

Stephen Vaughan

There’s a famous tale that Batman & Robin director Joel Schumacher settled on George Clooney as his second and final Batman after sketching the superhero’s cowl with a Magic Marker over Clooney’s face in photos. I’m sure there was actually much more involved in the casting, but the story underscores a basic truth about playing every superhero, but especially Batman: No one really cares who wears the suit.

At least that was true for a long time. READ FULL STORY »

'True Blood' adds fresh blood: Janina Gavankar and Jessica Tuck become regulars

true-blood-newbiesImage Credit: Koi Sojer/PR Photos; Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Thimali KodikaraTrue Blood casting! Three new ladies are joining the cast of everyone’s favorite summertime vamp soap: HBO confirms that Janina Gavankar will be a regular on the show come 2011, and Alexandra Breckenridge and Vedette Lim will be recurring; Jessica Tuck, who plays the head vampire spokeswoman, has been bumped up to a regular, too.

Gavankar, who will always be Shiva from The League to me, is going to play a teacher/shape-shifter, I guess to keep Sam company. Breckenridge, who was great as the pouty Willa on Dirt (why am I the only one who loved that show?), will be a Wiccan, and Lim will a cage fighter, according to Deadline. Is cage fighter now a mythical being? No one tell Ryan from The O.C.. READ FULL STORY »

Darren Criss sings 'Part of Your World,' makes us pine for a Disney 'Glee' episode

Even though he’s helped set sales records with his infectious rendition of “Teenage Dream,” new Glee dreamboat Darren Criss is still just a regular guy who likes to belt out a nice Disney tune every now and then. Criss treated patrons of L.A.’s The Grove shopping mall to an impromptu concert yesterday, covering “Part of Your World,” from “one of [his] favorite movies of all time,” The Little Mermaid. Kudos to Criss for appropriately making this a collaborative affair — “What’s that word again?” — with his very enthusiastic audience. Do I smell a Glee Disney episode? READ FULL STORY »

Gwyneth Paltrow on 'Chelsea Lately': We'll drink to this charming appearance

Gwyneth Paltrow was on Chelsea Lately last night, and she was all giggles and charm and long legs. She likes wine! Her daughter switches accents! She, uh, emailed Robert Downey Jr. to ask him to explain addiction to her for her role in Country Strong. (DVR some Intervention episodes, lady.) READ FULL STORY »

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark': New video features Bono, Julie Taymor, gorgeous-looking nonsense

A new behind-the-scenes video for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has just hit the internet. If you’re like me, you’ve been confused but fascinated by everything you’ve seen about the Broadway superhero show, with music by the more famous half of U2. Now, the production has posted a new behind-the-scenes video. There are mostly just a few glimpses of the insane stage design, but the really fun thing is seeing the creative forces behind the project struggle to explain just what, precisely, this thing is.

Julie Taymor — the woman who turned The Lion King into the awesome Broadway show that gave your kids nightmares for weeks — wins for her description: “We can’t really tell you what this is. But it has rock ‘n roll, it has drama, and it has circus.” (Pause to picture a dramatic rock ‘n roll circus.) Bono says the Bono-iest thing I’ve heard all week: “They’re modern myths, these comic book heroes.” The Edge, meanwhile, takes a jaunty Everyman approach that Stan Lee himself would appreciate: “He got bitten by a spider! It could happen to anyone!”

PopWatchers, I have no clue if Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark will be good-crazy (like Maximum Carnage) or bad-crazy (like the Clone Saga), but man, I’m stoked to see it! What do you think? Is the world ready for a dance-fighting superhero?

'The Bachelor': ABC celebrates Brad Womack hatred with slap-happy promo

The Bachelor‘s Brad Womack, the man who notoriously rejected both finalists, wants another chance at love and lucky for him (and us?), ABC is more than willing to make that happen. But are the single women of America ready to forgive and forget? Not exactly. ABC’s new promo for the upcoming season reveals that the emotional wounds Brad inflicted on our hearts back in 2007 still haven’t quite healed. Acting on behalf of jilted women everywhere, one of his potential soul-mates-to-be left her mark — and possibly a hand print — during their in-no-way-rehearsed introduction. Check it out below. 'Hawaii Five-0' Bingo: So close!

HAWAII-FIVE-0-BingoImage Credit: Neil Jacobs/CBS Dear creators of Hawaii Five-0: Quit playing games with my heart. Half an hour into last night’s episode, we were on the cusp of a rare Triple Bingo. All we needed was a throwaway shot of a yummy tropical fish, a thrilling helicopter ride, or the last-minute revelation that the bad guys were gangsters. But alas! The budgets for underwater photography and airships must’ve been spent already, and the bad guys were a total Point Break crew of thrill-robbing triathletes. (I guess you could argue that triathletes are gangsters, in that they huddle in gangs and secretly control the government.)

We did see a morally ambiguous overweight Native Hawaiian, who was then granted pounds of lawsuit material when Danno and Steve weightlift-tortured him. Alex O’Loughlin ran faster than an elevator. At one point, Alex O’Loughlin got shirtless and Grace Park put on a bikini. If Daniel Dae Kim had hopped on his bike and Scott Caan said “Blah blah blah ex-wife blah blah daughter!” it would have officially exploded my TV. Daniel Dae Kim didn’t lurk in the shadowy surveillance van, but he did surveille from a van that was shadowy, which earns him half a star. Click forward for the full Bingo Board! READ FULL STORY »

'Skating With the Stars' snap judgment: Not AS bad as we thought

Adam Taylor/ABC

Skating With the Stars debuted last night, and although British host Vernon Kay (no Tom Bergeron) did his best to repeatedly assure us that this was the most dangerous live competition on TV — “The performances will be just as explosive, the costumes even tinier, but there is an added element of  danger — razor-sharp blades of steel strapped to the feet of six very nervous stars!” — no one even fell during their debut performances. At least we got some serious spills in the training montages. (Vince Neil fell more than all the other contestants combined, we were told.) After all, Kay promised, “If you like watching celebrities fall over, and let’s face it who doesn’t, then you’ve come to the right place.”

So essentially, this is Dancing With the Stars on Ice, only the pros have a tougher time covering for their partner if he or she sucks, because the celebrity can’t stand still while the professional does all the fancy footwork around him or her. Each week, contestants will perform a routine that must include certain required elements. Last night’s were the one-foot assisted glide and the pair spin. The judges — Johnny Weir, Dick Button, and Lady Gaga choreographer Laurieann Gibson — will give them two scores, technical and merit, which account for 50 percent of their overall score. Audience votes determine the other half. The first contestant will get the boot at the end of next week’s show, so everyone gets to take the ice at least twice.

Let’s go down the leaderboard:  READ FULL STORY »
