'Dancing With the Stars': Week 8 is liiiiiiiive!

Filed under: Reality TV, TV and tagged: ,

Eight i’s for eight weeks, duh. Welcome back, DANCMSTRs, to Week 8 of Dancing With the Stars‘ season 11. Will Jennifer Grey (pictured, right) avoid Brandy’s wickedly delicious side eye long enough to get her entire hand around the COVETED MIRRORBALL TROPHY? Will something make Carrie Ann cry? Will I pass out within the first hour if I play the Take A Sip Every Time Brooke Burke Asks ‘How Do You Feel?’ drinking game? So many rhetorical questions; so few answers; so much time left to go in this episode. I better hold onto my sequined hat and settle down.

[Update: The settling worked. Week 8 performance recap is liiiiiiiive!] READ FULL STORY »

Warner Brothers overhaul of 'Harry Potter' studio to include exhibit, tour: Dreams DO come true!

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

I wouldn’t call myself a Harry Potter fanatic, but even I’ve had the dreams: You’re walking the misty grounds of Hogwarts, mesmerized by the magical sight before you, when a group of uniform-clad kids stops you and invites you to play a game of Quidditch. Anyone? Just me? Okay…

Regardless, I know that will never happen, but the second best thing is on the way. Warner Brothers confirmed to EW that a Harry Potter exhibit will be part of their multimillion dollar overhaul of Leavesden Studios in London, which has been home to the Potter film franchise for the last decade. Along with the chance to see memorabilia, the tour will give fans a chance to see sets from the movies, according to Deadline.

Along with the ode to Potter, planned renovations to the studio include the addition of two new sound stages, which will make it one of the largest production lots in Europe. The project is set to be completed in 2012.

Before you check, I’ve done the leg work for you: Airlines are not selling tickets to London for 2012 yet. Instead, tell me, PopWatchers, how excited are you about this news? Does this sound like the Potter people’s version of Graceland? And have you had dreams about of touring Potter land, too?

Jimmy Kimmel's National UnFriend Day set for Nov. 17

In case you missed it, Jimmy Kimmel recently called for Nov. 17 to be National UnFriend Day (NUD), a day on which Facebook users are encouraged to “unFriend” people who aren’t actually their friends. Watch his two-part pitch below. “Remember five years ago when nobody was on Facebook and you didn’t know what the guy you took high school biology with was having for lunch? Remember how that was totally fine? Let’s go back to that,” he says.

Kimmel makes a valid point on one hand: A friend is someone to whom you’d loan $50. But on the other, with Facebook’s current design, don’t you really have to go to someone’s Facebook page to be annoyed by how frequently they post with their flimsy news judgment? Maybe it’s because I only check Facebook every few days, but I’m not bombarded with that information. In fact, I’m always missing things friends post (then again, is that because I have “friends” taking up their space in the feed?).

What’s your current rule for “Friending” on Facebook? Is Kimmel’s National UnFriend Day the excuse you’ve been waiting for to make your list leaner? Or would you be confident enough to do that any day of the year? (It’s not like that person gets sent a message notifying them you’re no longer friends.) For the record: I don’t seek out high school classmates, but if one of them “friends” me, I accept. In my experience, it’s one message exchange, tops, and then it’s back to mutually unobtrusive radio silence. Of course, then you do get Facebook suggesting other classmates you should friend, and when you decide not to take it up on its offer, you realize those people are most likely seeing your name and making the same decision. That, I can live with. It’s when Facebook suggests that I should friend the two guys who bullied me in high school that I have a problem. My MacBook Pro has definitely heard about that.)  READ FULL STORY »

Michael Jackson's mom and kids on 'Oprah': Are you watching?

Filed under: TV and tagged: ,

Almost a year and a half after Michael Jackson’s death, the pop star’s mother, Katherine, and children gave interviews to Oprah Winfrey talking about their son and father. Watching the below clip, I am most struck by two things: 1) How gentle and heartbroken his poor mother is, and 2) How much his daughter, Paris, now looks like her mother, Debbie Rowe. It’s sweet (and kind of shocking) to hear her describe Jackson as “the best cook ever.” Somehow I simply can’t visualize him making them French toast.

Did Oprah’s interviews change your perception of the King of Pop at all? Are you glad his family is speaking out, or should they let his legacy live on as it is? READ FULL STORY »

'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides': Jerry Bruckheimer talks about that Dame Judi Dench cameo

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , ,

Johnny-Depp-Judi-DenchImage Credit: Solarpix/PR Photos; Photorazzi/PR PhotosLast week, the news broke that British acting legend Dame Judi Dench has a cameo in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth adventure to feature Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and the first to be directed by Chicago auteur Rob Marshall. But how did producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s crew of salty sea dogs snag the revered Oscar winner for their latest pirate caper? Was it ‘arrrd work? Apparently not, thanks to the fact that Dame Judi had previously worked with Marshall on 2009′s Nine and Depp on 2000′s Chocolat. “Rob is loved by his stars,” Bruckheimer tells EW. “And the combination of that and Johnny Depp — Judi thought it would be an intriguing thing to do.”

Are you looking forward to the fourth Pirates movie? And to Dame Judi’s cameo?

'Dancing With the Stars': Derek Hough on Week 8 stress, same-sex pairs, and the dangers of guyliner

Five contestants left! With DWTS‘ season 11 down to the wire, Our Pro Derek Hough (who partners actress Jennifer Grey) checks in just before Week 8 goes liiiiiiiiiiiiive! Don’t miss his answers to questions about “Rock and Roll” Week 6, after the break.

How stressed out is everyone RIGHT THIS SECOND???
Everyone is fairly stressed out. But to be honest with most of the cast you’d never be able to tell. Everyone is always so composed.

I loved when you told Jennifer last week, “It’s fine. It’s just a dance show” to put things in perspective. Do you ever have to stop and remind yourself of that, too, or do you have a pretty steady sense of perspective having done this for many seasons?
Every season is something new and intense for me. It’s always a change as no two partners of mine have been alike. But at the end of the day, it’s a dance show and you win a mirror ball trophy. It can be competitive, but it always has to stay fun. READ FULL STORY »

Conan O'Brien prepares for tonight's premiere in new American Express commercial: Every detail counts

In case you haven’t been keeping track, it has been nine and a half long months since we last watched Conan O’Brien from the comfort of our own sofa and footie pajamas. After his fallout with NBC — and the endless promotion of his new show Conan from TBS — it’s understandable that O’Brien wants everything about tonight’s premiere to be just perfect. Ever the true team player, Coco is not above carrying out the most minute details himself, even if that means getting his pretty white pants a little dirty. (White after Labor Day? For shame, Coco.) After the jump, watch Sir Conan, man of the people, travel to India to haggle with fabric sellers and trade gossip with local women in a new ad for American Express. Considering tonight’s first guest might be the curator of a nutcracker museum, this doesn’t seem too far off from what we can expect from the new Conan, right? READ FULL STORY »

'Dancing With the Stars' Crazy Costume Watch: Which couple wore it better?

Remember when Lacey Schwimmer and Kyle Massey attempted to re-imagine Scary Spice and Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s “Pleather Power” paso doble from season 5? Of course you don’t — it was a whole week ago. (Also acceptable: “No; who are those people?”) We’ve pitted the season 11 contestants against their “inspirations” from seasons of yore. Be sure to click through today’s ‘DWTS’: Which team wore it better? photo gallery and vote for the couples who embodied the spirit of the sequin in a more believable/ridiculous way. FREE YOUR MIND and rock the vote!

My favorite battle is Pink Comet in the Glitz Galaxy (Kelly Osbourne) vs. Peaches ‘N’ Cream Barbie (Bristol Palin), but I also like Banana Man vs. Jolly Green Giant and Chocolate Ganache vs. Red Velvet Cake. Maybe I just wanted to type those food words again.

It’s so important to vote.

Conan O'Brien gives you five reasons to watch his new show: 'Reuniting Led Zeppelin is a goal of mine'

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

conan-obrienImage Credit: TBSIn just a few short hours, Conan O’Brien ends his hiatus from the tube with the debut of Conan, a late-night talk show on TBS. Looking for a reason to watch his fresh start? Well, you’re in luck: O’Brien gave EW.com five good ones.

1.  ”There may be a cash giveaway. And I repeat may.”

2. “Late in the first show, I’m choosing a second wife — someone who’s independently very wealthy, so if I go through this kind of bulls— again, I’m really well taken care of. I mean, I’m talking about someone with hundreds of millions of dollars, because then I’ll really walk the walk.”

3. “You’ll get to see whether I kept the beard or not. And I don’t think I’m self-centered, but I think it’s more important to America than this election.” READ FULL STORY »
