From lady killer to media killer: Cee-Lo Green appeared on The Colbert Report last night to tout his new album, The Lady Killer, and host Stephen Colbert found a way to make the musician’s infectious “F–k You” even more catchy for his Nation. Since the Report is “a family show” — why wouldn’t it be, what with its focus on incredibly petrifying cuddly bears? — Colbert recommended a replacement phrase for the song’s title: Fox News. (Sorry, little guy, Beef Stew was ultimately rejected for this more “positive” phrase.) Though Green did eventually sing the real lyrics to his hit later in the show, he appeased the host for one verse, singing: “Saw you driving ’round town with the girl I love on Fox News / Didn’t see one politician that wasn’t corrupt on the Fox News, and I get the blues / The poor get poorer, the rich get richer / Ain’t that some s— / I’m having pains in my chest because I’m so stressed over Fox News.” (See the video embedded after the jump.) Alright, Fox News interviewee/sometimes singer John Ashcroft — it’s high time for a song battle, no? READ FULL STORY »

Scarlett Johansson's 'SNL' promos: An Iron Man cameo!
This weekend, Scarlett Johansson will be hosting Saturday Night Live for the third time — with musical guest Arcade Fire — which means three things: 1) Halo‘s interactive universe will be suspiciously silent as of 11:30 Saturday night, as teenage boys flock to NBC, 2) We can cross our fingers for a Ryan Reynolds cameo, and 3) We’ll see some comedic magic from Johansson. Well, that is if the actress’ SNL promos — with cast member Smitty Jason Sudeikis — are any indication. Click the jump to see Johansson’s promos for the show, which include an appearance from a certain Iron Man(!). READ FULL STORY »
'Glee': You suck, McKinley High students
Image Credit: FoxI know high school is cruel and no one wants to do anything to make themselves a target, but how could no one walking the McKinley High halls who saw bully Karofsky shove Kurt against the lockers hard enough to make him fall to the ground NOT stop and at least ask Kurt if he’s okay? Isn’t that a human reflex when you see someone fall? It wasn’t like Karofsky was standing over Kurt, so people had to worry about him pounding on them. McKinley High clearly runs on fear — Puck intimidated classmates out of $300, really? — but watching this was soul-crushing. I get that that’s the point: We need to feel Kurt’s isolation. But I don’t want to hate everyone at McKinley High.
This goes back to the discussion we were having yesterday, after Madonna suggested on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that to stop bullying, people should walk away from someone when they’re spreading gossip. If you stand idly by and listen (or watch) in silence as someone tears another person down, you’re condoning it. There should be people other than Kurt and his new friend Blaine (swoon) telling Karofsky it’s not okay. The strongest people in high school are the ones who walk down those halls knowing they’re going to be teased. The second strongest are those who try to stop that from happening.
Update: A source tells EW someone else will come to Kurt’s defense in the Nov. 23 episode.

Reality-contestant suicides: Who's to blame?
Image Credit: Kevin Foley/ABC via Getty Images; Discovery ChannelThe recent suicide of onetime Bachelorette contestant Julien Hug — a 35-year-old who vied for Jillian Harris’ affection in the summer 2009 season — has sparked another round of “who’s to blame?” media speculation. The Today show chronicled Hug’s death, as well as that of Storm Chasers‘ Matthew Hughes, in a segment this morning that wondered whether reality TV drives contestants to tragic ends: READ FULL STORY »
'Deadliest Catch' producer's new show 'Whisker Wars' follows men who grow facial hair competitively
Image Credit: Al Grillo/AP ImagesIn 2009, I wrote a PopWatch post titled World Beard and Moustache Championships: This needs to be televised, in which I argued that this event, held every two years, be chronicled for the masses. In a poll, 79 percent of readers said they’d watch an hour special on it in 2011. Well, Deadliest Catch exec producer Thom Beers isn’t stopping there: He’s hooked up with IFC to develop Whisker Wars, “a non-fiction series set in the world of competitive facial hair growing which profiles a group of men from the National Beard and Mustache Championship in Bend, Oregon to the World Competition in Norway.” For me, someone still marveling at the emotional and poetic storytelling behind Deadliest Catch‘s sixth season, this is as exciting as if I heard about a new Aaron Sorkin or Joss Whedon show. Presumably, growing facial hair isn’t as dangerous as crabbing on the Bering Sea, but I still want to know why these men do it. I trust Beers and his crew to find the humor and the heart, along with the drama. Are you in? Check out the WBMC’s Parade of Champions in the video below. (That’s David Traver, winner of the Freestyle Beard category and the overall title, pictured. He retired shortly after his victory.) READ FULL STORY »
'Fringe' sneak peek and contest: Your best guess about Walter Bishop's mystery note
Fringe fans craving even a small glimpse into the future that is tomorrow night need not break into Walter Bishop’s Harvard lab and switch on his high-tech AlternaWorld-o-Vision to do so … especially since it wouldn’t work, because it peeks into parallel worlds, not the future. I mean, duh! (Damn how this show inspires me to the most convoluted sentences.) Just look at the photo at right. Walter Bishop and Nina Sharp are reading a note. Context? All I know is what I was told by the bald guy with hot sauce stains on his suit who dropped the photo off at my office: “On a rare visit to the Harvard campus, Nina and Walter take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about the good ol’ days when they let curiosity be their guide. This leads to a discussion about Peter’s ongoing investigation (much to Walter’s dismay) about that doomsday machine …” (My source — usually more of a strong, silent type — was in an uncommonly chatty mood, so I’m very appreciative for his scoop!)
I know, know. Your mind: Buh-lowwwwn. But quick! Scrape your bloody gray matter off the wall and remold it into the high-powered theory-making super-computer it once was because I would like to play a game with you. The piece of paper that Walter is reading: What’s on it? Here are your options. I am told that one of these answers is actually correct. READ FULL STORY »
Second night of 'Conan': Enough with the TBS jokes already
Image Credit: Meghan Sinclair/Conaco LLCIt was nice, Tuesday night, to see Conan O’Brien — and his beard — back on the air for a second night in a row, the signal that he’s returned to late-night for the long haul. What I’m looking forward to even more, though, is a time when he dispenses with the self-referential humor about losing his NBC gig and coming to basic cable. I get that he needs to address it at the beginning — it was a huge news story, and there is certainly humor to be found in it — and I know that late-night hosts honor a long tradition of sticking it to their home networks, no matter which one they’re on. But the lengthy, dead-weight bit wherein he visited the Standards and Practices guy — which seemed like it was going to be so much fun when he introduced it by saying he wanted to find out what he can get away with on the air — made me wish he’d just move on. 'Jane Eyre' trailer: It almost looks like a horror film
Director Cary Fukunaga’s take on the naturally dark Charlotte Brontë tale looks like a supernatural thriller to those unfamiliar with the real cause of unexplained events at Thornfield: Love it. Alice in Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska takes the title role, while Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Jonah Hex) is Edward Rochester, her employer with a secret. From the spooky music, to the foreboding dialogue delivered by Dame Judi Dench, to Rochester’s phantom-like black eyes — it all works. Watch the trailer below. READ FULL STORY »
