Nicole Richie heading to TV for comedy series: Anyone else hoping for 'The Simple Life'-level ridiculousness + skirt suits?

Nicole-RichieImage Credit: Jason LaVeris/Getty ImagesIf you enjoyed seeing Nicole Richie on Chuck, rejoice — because you’re about to get a lot more of her on your TV screen.

ABC confirmed to EW that Richie is heading to TV in a comedy series that she helped conceptualize and will star in. Of course, people who read her blog (table of one, please), knew this was a long-time coming. Almost one year ago, Richie wrote a blog post detailing her in-the-works project for the Alphabet network, saying, “The story revolves around a young, modern, and professional woman who must balance her business and family relationships. She must deal with, and navigate the many ideas of what a woman’s role is: modern vs. traditional.”

The single-cam comedy is being written by Jeff Rake, who worked on the 2003 Alicia Silverstone series Miss Match — which lasted 11 episodes. Bleak, I know. But I wouldn’t count this show out yet. As long as they steer clear of making this a trite comedy about over-dressed lawyers, perfectly coifed doctors, celebrity-shmoozing fashion designers, or, yes, magazine writers, this could be fun. Because Richie is entertaining. Admit it: The Simple Life was amusing and funny — at times. (Okay, I loved every minute, but I’m a little twisted.) I’d love to see a show that captures the same level of ridiculata in scripted format. The women don’t have to be glam — just real.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Do you see the possibilities? Will you join my Simple Life fan club of one? And would you give the show a chance?  (Additional reporting by Jennifer Armstrong)

Google 'Watch Conan' ... to get to Jay Leno's website

Filed under: TV and tagged: , ,

conan-jayImage Credit: Art Streiber/TBS; Mitchell Haaseth/NBCAlthough Conan O’Brien and his new TBS show Conan is winning the ratings war so far, he’s getting killed in the search engine optimization war.

If you search “Watch Conan” on Google, the website for Jay Leno’s Tonight Show is the first result. See for yourself.

This could be a simple mistake, right? Maybe the web team just changed the name on the header of the website when the two hosts swapped places. But we here at PopWatch like conspiracy theories. After all, the search term “Conan Obrien” returns Leno’s site as the third result, and the search term “Conan O’Brien” returns it as the sixth. Is NBC holding onto O’Brien’s web traffic and characters?

PopWatchers, what do you think is going on here? Does Google’s search algorithm have a sense of irony?

'Glee': Darren Criss becoming a series regular would make all of our teenage dreams come true

darren-crissImage Credit: Rebecca SanabriaFollowing his debut last night as Dalton Academy’s smooth, openly gay student Blaine, Deadline is reporting that Darren Criss is in talks to become a series regular, a promotion that Michael Ausiello predicts will likely begin at the start of Glee‘s third season. It’s like Ryan Murphy can read our minds! Criss was originally slated as a recurring character this season, with many speculating he’d be playing Kurt’s love interest — and judging by Kurt’s new locker decor, it looks like the crush seed has already been planted. His rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” backed by fellow Dalton Academy students, was a breath of fresh air (our recapper Tim Stack gave it an A+) and his role as Kurt’s mentor and ally is definitely a welcomed addition to the show’s dynamic. Plus, those Dalton boys were pretty fierce, which could mean more diverse competition for New Directions instead of solely the big, bad, Vocal Adrenaline machine.

So tell me, PopWatchers: Based on your response to last night’s episode, the climbing iTunes numbers, and the fact that I’ve just played “Teenage Dream” four times in a row, would hiring Criss full-time be a smart move for Glee?

'The Eagle' trailer: Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell's soaring fight scenes

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Channing Tatum, looking sufficiently hard-jawed, stars in this Roman period flick — based on Rosemary Sutcliff’s book Eagle of the Ninth — which follows a centurion who travels far and wide with his slave (played by Jamie Bell) in search of his legion’s token, a golden eagle. A few things: 1) My guess is his greatest foe will be this guy, 2) I’ve missed seeing Donald Sutherland on the big screen, and 3) Tatum and Bell’s slave-master relationship seems a bit dysfunctional, what with all the on-screen fighting. (Advantage: Bell. We know that he’s got quick feet. And that Tatum was already injured in a cringe-worthy way on the set.) See trailer after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Life of 'Britain's Got Talent' contestant Paul Potts coming to a theater near you

paul-pottsImage Credit: Andreas Rentz/Getty ImagesDeadline is reporting that director David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) will helm One Chance, the story of unlikely Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts. A cellphone salesman from Wales, Potts wowed notoriously crotchety judges Simon Cowell and Piers Morgan with his initial audition performance of “Nessun dorma,” and went on to win season 1 of the British reality competition in 2007 before embarking on a successful opera recording career. Cowell was originally slated to produce the film, but has since dropped out (he’s busy working on bringing X-Factor to America … and maybe a Susan Boyle biopic one day?).

While Potts and Boyle are undeniably talented, these “unlikely reality television success stories” drive me crazy — Look, it’s an older, conventionally unattractive person who can actually do something well! Does Potts’ story really deserve the feature film treatment? And how accurate to life will it be? It’s being described as a comedy, which may be the right move. I love a good underdog story, and am a total anglophile, so if One Chance becomes more of a Full Monty-esque tale, I could dig it.

Hopping back across the pond, is there any America’s Got Talent contestant whose life story you would like to see played out on the big screen? Recent finalist Jackie Evancho needs a few more years of life experience to warrant one, while winner Michael Grimm — whose grandparents lost their home after Hurricane Katrina — seems ripe for a major studio’s picking if they’re looking to bank on blubbering idiots like myself. But really, the obvious AGT choice would be Prince Poppycock — if only to gain some insight on his makeup and skincare regimen.

What do you think, PopWatchers: Is the life of Paul Potts the kind of underdog story you’d pay money to see? What other reality show contestants deserve their own films?

Excess Hollywood: Harvey Fierstein joins Broadway's 'La Cage Aux Folles'

  • Harvey Fierstein is joining the cast of Broadway’s La Cage Aux Folles, according to a press release from the production. The Tony Award-winner will star as Albin. Appropriate, since Fierstein wrote the book on La Cage Aux Folles. No, really, he did.
  • In other, sadder stage news, the producers of Next To Normal announced via press release that the Broadway show will play its final performance Jan. 16, 2011.
  • Bette Midler is set to star in a 70-minute New Year’s Eve special called Bette Midler: The Showgirl Must Go On. Not when it comes to this one. [Variety]
  • Kevin Spacey confirmed with EW reporter Carrie Bell that he will both produce and act in the cult-centric The Crux, which is currently on HBO’s development slate. “I just don’t know when it’s going to start,” he said about the series, which, apparently, is not based on a specific cult. “It is … paying attention to what particular people are doing, either individuals or groups, that either call themselves a cult or are accused of being a cult.” Do Bieber fans count?
  • Cary Elwes, Adelaide Clemens, Samantha Mathis, and Gregg Sulkin will appear in the adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s Camilla Dickinson, which follows a girl who watches her parents’ marriage crumble. But then she watches Saw and realizes it all could be much, much worse. [THR]
  • Army Wives‘ Catherine Bell will star in Close Quarters, a Lifetime thriller telefilm about a special-ops agent-turned-suburban mom. (So, essentially, her character is her series’ name squeezed together.) Anthony Michael Hall will play her husband, while Mekhi Phifer will co-star as another agent. [Deadline]
  • The Tony Awards are movin’ on up… to the West side: The ceremony will relocate from Radio City Music Hall to the Beacon Theatre in New York City. [AP]
  • CBS is going straight to the The Wild Wild West: The network will reboot the old series with former CSI executive director Naren Shankar and Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ron Moore at the helm. [Deadline]
  • Broadway’s Catch Me If You Can has grabbed hold of a cast: The producers of the musical stage adaptation announced its cast today: Norbert Leo Butz as Carl Hanratty, Aaron Tveit as Frank Abagnale, Jr., Tom Wopat as Frank Abagnale, Sr., and Kerry Butler as Brenda Strong. Be sure to catch it: Previews will begin March 7, 2011 on Broadway.
  • Screen Media announced via press release that it has acquired White Irish Drinkers, a coming-of-age film about me two 1970s-era teenagers’ relationship with their father (played by Stephen Lang).
  • Paladin has picked up A Love Affair of Sorts, David Guy Levy’s film shot entirely with a Flip camera. Does that mean the film is entirely made up of funny cat footage and Parkour? If so, then I’m IN. [Variety]

'Little Fockers': New trailer makes us happy for Paul Weitz

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

Judging from this new trailer for Little Fockers, it looks like Paul Weitz may finally be digging his way out of director’s jail. Paul and his brother Chris co-directed a terrific adaptation of Nick Hornby’s About a Boy back in 2002, and then went their mostly separate ways. Chris landed big-tent projects like The Golden Compass and New Moon, while Paul had less luck with movies like American Dreamz and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. But this new trailer for Little Fockers, the third film in the Focker family franchise, with Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, and Barbra Streisand all reprising their roles, makes us wonder if Paul is finally coming into his own. If nothing else, it’s a vast improvement on the earlier trailer Universal released for the film last month. But what do you think Popwatchers? Are you ready for yet another Focker? READ FULL STORY »

Rubik's Cube: It might be a movie. It already was a TV show.

News of a potential Rubik’s Cube movie sounds crazy, unless you happen to remember the ’80s cartoon series Rubik, The Amazing Cube. This series (which, we assure you, was a real thing that happened) starred the most annoying toy at your doctor’s office, which sprouted legs and a terrifying smurf face in order to help adorable children solve magical mysteries or something. 'Chuck' star Yvonne Strahovski covers 'Dirrty Glam': Why I love it

Filed under: Chuck, Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Yvonne-Strahovski-on-Dirrty-GirlSince I don’t speak French, I can’t actually read online fashion magazine Dirrty Glam‘s November cover story on Chuck‘s Yvonne Strahovski, but I’m loving the photo spread. No way does this beautiful, butt-kicking woman get to do a photo shoot for an American publication wearing this many clothes. The buttoned-up, yet form-fitting cardigan, the see-through sweater that shows her bra without the photos actually revealing her cup size — extremely sexy and still classy. Dirrty Glam is for fashionistas, not men, but still, this looks like the photo shoot we wish Lea Michele and Dianna Agron could’ve done for GQ.

'Hot in Cleveland' scoop: Valerie Bertinelli to reteam with 'One Day at a Time' costar Bonnie Franklin. Plus: Tons more guest stars!

EW has learned that Bonnie Franklin—who starred the divorced mother Ann Romano to Valerie Bertinelli’s Barbara on CBS’ One Day at a Time—will guest star on Bertinelli’s current sitcom, TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland, this coming season, which launches Jan. 19. This is the first time that Franklin and Bertinelli will have appeared in a scripted series together in 26 years. One Day at a Time launched in December 1975, and went off the air in May 1984. The cast of One Day at a Time did reunite for interviews on CBS’ newsmagazine 60 Minutes in 2005. The casting of Franklin follows a trend on Hot in Cleveland, which will also be reuniting Mary Tyler Moore and Betty White this season, based on their time working together on The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the ’70s.

UPDATE: Melanie Griffith, Illeana Douglas (Ugly Betty), Wayne Knight (Seinfeld), John Schneider (Dukes of Hazzard), David Starzyk (Desperate Housewives), and Jack Wagner (Melrose Place) will also guest star on the second season of Hot in Cleveland.
