Tori Spelling's talk show gets a co-host with lots of experience 'Flipping Out'

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Jeff-Lewis-Tori-SpellingImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Tommaso Boddi/PR PhotosTori Spelling’s male co-host-to-be-named-later may have a name now: Flipping Out star Jeff Lewis. Back in April, news broke that ABC was developing a daytime talk show for Spelling and a co-host that would give the enterprise a “Will & Grace vibe.” Well, it looks like Lewis will be providing the Will after what the L.A. Times reports as the pair’s good chemistry during a test pilot.

We here at EW love us some Lewis — the latest season of Flipping Out landed on the Must List in August. Still, anyone who’s seen his Bravo reality series would agree that he’s somewhat … intense? And since Spelling’s no shrinking violet, this could be an awful lot of energy for one daytime duo. What do you think? Inspired idea?

The 'relatable' 'Bama Belles' heads to TLC. But do we want to see relatable TV?

TLC is taking its cameras down south to follow a group of women in rural Dothan, Ala. The limited-run reality series, Bama Belles, will start with three one-hour shows with the plan to pick up more if the show’s successful. The southern Belles include a radio personality-real estate developer, an ex-beauty queen, a beautician, an Internet entrepreneur and New York transplant, and an Army reservist. “TLC is taking a real look at the Southern lifestyle of these women in a relatable and fun way,” Nancy Daniels, TLC production/development senior VP, told Variety.

This whole premise begs the following question: Is there anyone they won’t give a reality show to? (Answer: Yes. Me.) READ FULL STORY »

Excess Hollywood: Emma Stone to reunite with 'Easy A' director Will Gluck

  • Emma Stone will re-team with Easy A director Will Gluck for an upcoming untitled comedy with Screen Gems. This is Stone’s fourth casting announcement of the year: She’s also set to star in the Spider-Man reboot, The Help, and Crazy, Stupid, Love. And then, after that, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. No, sorry, that’s Jude Law. [Variety]
  • Murder, She Wrote star Angela Lansbury is set to play Katherine Heigl’s mother in Adaline, a film about a woman who is brought back to life and becomes immortal, stuck in her 20s until she meets her dream man. Based on Heigl’s age, I’m guessing that dream man exists somewhere around 2004, so I’m gonna go… Jude Law, again? (Aww, I’m sorry Sean Penn.) [Deadline]
  • Maggie Gyllenhaal and husband Peter Sarsgaard will appear off-Broadway together from Jan. 12 to Feb. 20 in Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters. Instead of throwing flowers, toss the duo some consonants on stage!  [Associated Press]
  • From “senior black correspondent” to sitcom star: The Daily Show‘s Larry Wilmore will follow in Steve Carell’s footsteps and star in an NBC sitcom about a family who become the stars of a U.K. documentary. [THR]
  • The Disney Channel is jumpstarting its first musical TV series, Madison High, about 11-16-year-olds who work to create a musical theater production based on their lives. Boy, we’re really going to get mad when they pose for GQ. [Deadline]
  • Oscar-winning Departed screenwriter William Monahan will direct and adapt the Jean Anouilh play Becket for the big screen. The play chronicles the “friendship and estrangement” of King Henry II and the Archbishop of Canterbury. [Deadline]
  • Inferno Entertainment has greenlit a biopic, Ocean Warrior, which will center on Animal Planet’s Whale Wars star Capt. Paul Watson. You’re next, dog scared of robot. [Variety]
  • Benita Robledo (Gossip Girl) is headed back to high school: The actress is set to star in MTV’s Patito Feo pilot, about a Mexican girl who relocates to America and clashes with popular girls at her new school. [Deadline]

Danielle Staub's new music video will make you laugh, scream, and, of course, 'cry'

As promised, former Real Housewives of New Jersey star Danielle Staub’s new music video “Cry” will allow people to “literally hear and feel” what it’s like to experience abuse. Check it out over at Gawker if you’re a masochist, because it will cause you severe pain.

Between this and this, I just can’t today, PopWatchers. All right fine, let’s be serious … I’m holding out for the “Cry” dance remix.

'Harry Potter': Quidditch World Cup happening this weekend, for real

Quidditch-TournamentImage Credit: Christopher Capozziello/Getty ImagesWhen the first Harry Potter film hit theaters in 2001, could you have predicted that New York City would be hosting the fourth annual Quidditch World Cup this weekend? Some of you may be aware that students at Vermont’s Middlebury College are credited with first making the fantasy sport a reality in 2005, and today, there’s an International Quidditch Association. Forty-six teams will compete this weekend, including Middlebury, Boston University, Michigan State, NYU, Vassar, Syracuse, and Yale. I don’t know which is more entertaining:

Watching people purposely run around with a broomstick between their legs

• Watching the Snitch, a person dressed in gold with a tennis ball stuffed into a sock that dangles out of his or her shorts, run around. “Snitches have been known to ride on bicycles across the field; snitches have hid in families in the stands; in 2008 a snitch appeared at the top of one of the buildings,” IQA spokeswoman Alicia Radford told Fox News. “… I even saw a snitch once take off the seeker’s cape and wave it at him like a matador.”

• People debating about whether this should become an official NCAA sport

These are brave, fun souls. In a PopWatch poll last month, 33 percent of people said they will be holding a wand when they see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in theaters; 47 percent said they would laugh at the people holding wands, but secretly wish they had one; 20 percent said they would laugh at the people holding wands, period. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for your love of Harry PotterREAD FULL STORY »

Expect bears, moose, glaciers, hunting, fishing, hunting from helicopters, the hunting of helicopters, and totally awesome seaplanes. Husband Todd will be along for the ride, along with all your favorite Palin children. The program is supposedly non-political, but don’t be surprised if the Gipper gets a shout-out. 'Battle: Los Angeles' trailer: Let the Comic-Con buzz continue...

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

The world is coming to an end — again — in Battle: Los Angeles. The plot of this Jonathan Liebesman-directed film is one we’ve all seen before: Aliens invade an unprepared Earth and we battle for survival. This time the target is Los Angeles, Calif. (thanks for giving New York a break for once, Hollywood!), and the Marines are the city’s only defense. The storyline might seem familiar (see: Cloverfield, Independence Day, War of the Worlds… the list goes on), but that doesn’t make Battle: L.A. look any less epic. Not only does this trailer, and its special effects, make me excited to see the flick — starring Hollywood tough girl Michelle Rodriguez and Aaron Eckhart — but word on the street is Comic-Con loved it, based on snippets shown at the convention. Check out the trailer for the March 2011 action flick after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert remaking a Japanese anime for Starz

Filed under: News, Television, TV and tagged: ,

One of the best developments in the last few years is the cultural re-emergence of Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert television. The pair exec-produced the syndicated ’90s fantasy duet Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess (not to mention M.A.N.T.I.S., which was my favorite show ever for a magical three-month period). They tried to recapture the New Zealand magic with Legend of the Seeker in 2008, but things really heated up with Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the hit gladiator show featuring Lucy Lawless, ex-Xena (and Mrs. Rob Tapert!) Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Starz is betting on the pair to extend their action dominion with Noir, a remake of a 2001 anime about a pair of female assassins.

Given the general tenor of the Raimi/Tapert TVography, I’m envisioning something like Nikita, except jauntier and with considerably more sex, violence, and sexy violence. I haven’t seen Noir, but, apparently, one of the assassins is a French blonde, and the other is a Japanese teenager. I’m betting that, if the show goes to series, the producers will go with unknowns … but while we’re just talking here, how about Harry Potter‘s Clémence Poésy as the French lady? (She was ridonk awesome in the criminally underrated In Bruges.)

PopWatchers, do you like the sound of Noir?

Fox benches 'Running Wilde' for November sweeps

running-wildeImage Credit: Ed Araquel/FoxIn the next two weeks, Fox will preempt new episodes of struggling comedy Running Wilde to air reruns of its other freshman comedy, Raising Hope, in the Tuesday 9:30 p.m. ET slot. A Christian Slater-starring comedy, Breaking In, could potentially replace Running Wilde mid-season. [Deadline]

I’m sad about the news — I love Will Arnett and Felicity. (Er, Keri Russell.) But I gave Running Wilde a fair chance and couldn’t justify keeping up with it when there are millions of other, better shows competing on my DVR to pry a good night’s sleep from my cold, nearly comatose hands. Are any of you still following Running Wilde? Should Fox hold out a little longer or let it go?

Also: Christian Slater again?! Network television’s love for him is God. Let’s get a slushie.

Natalie Portman pitching a 'Superbad'-esque script

natalie-portmanImage Credit: George Pimentel/WireImage.comWhy won’t Hollywood let Natalie Portman be funny? After twinkle-toeing in the forthcoming drama Black Swan — in which she plays a ballet dancer — the actress is ready to kick off her pointe shoes and have a beer, according to the L.A. Times. Portman and college buddy Laura Moses have been pitching a script that’s being described as the female version of the epic juvenile-humored Superbad.

It’s called BYO (an acronym for Bring Your Own) and follows two single (and so ready to mingle) ladies who decide to throw a party where every woman has to bring a single guy. Portman would star in it, of course, and Anne Hathaway is rumored to be interested in co-starring. But so far there’s been no takers. If all fails, the project will likely be personally financed and pushed through independently. But really, why should it even come to that? The basic plot sounds like a winner to me. And its selling point also seems like a lay-up. Portman and (maybe) Hathaway telling dirty jokes and trying to hook up with guys? I’ll take two tickets to that, please.

So what is it that Hollywood execs are balking at? Well, Portman’s never written a full-length feature. (Though, if you remember, she does boast a writing credit for a short in 2009′s New York, I Love You.) But we’ve seen Portman be dirty(-mouthed) — and we like it. So I say give her a chance, H-wood! What do you guys think? Would you go see this movie?
