Billy Ray Cyrus blesses troops, won't talk about divorce

Filed under: Music and tagged: , , ,

Billy Ray Cyrus had three things to say: “God bless America, God bless the troops,” and don’t ask him about his divorce. Cyrus was taping an interview on Tuesday (set to air today) for Woody and the Wake-Up Call on WCOL — Columbus, Ohio’s continuous country station! — when the host asked about his pending divorce. “I’m sorry, I had to ask you,” Woody Johnson stammered. And then Cyrus got huffy: READ FULL STORY »

'Walking Dead' comic creator Robert Kirkman talks about last night's episode, 'Tell It to the Frogs'

the-walking-deadLast night’s episode of The Walking Dead was a fairly gore-free zone, by the standards of AMC’s hit zombie show. True, we did get to see one of the undead chowing down on the insides of a deer before being beheaded — and then arrowed through the brain by a new character, Daryl Dixon, played by Boondock Saints star Norman Reedus. And the episode concluded with the image of a recently severed hand belonging to — or, by that point, not belonging to — Daryl’s brother Merle (Michael Rooker). But compared to the mayhem of last week’s let’s-wear-intestines-like-a-scarf, blood-a-thon Guts, this was a veritable Merchant-Ivory-esque yakfest — albeit one not short of incident as Rick was reunited with Lori (who thus discovered that Shane had been lying about her husband’s demise) and the hotheaded Daryl was informed that his sibling had been left to perish on the top of a building in Atlanta.

Regardless, it almost seemed like, having presumably repelled all the people who don’t like zombie movies with the first two shows, the behind-the-scenes team had decided to get rid of everyone who does enjoy a good undead flick with the third episode. “We’re really trying to burn through this audience as fast as we can,” laughs Robert Kirkman who writes the Walking Dead comic series and is an executive producer on the TV adaptation. “There are entirely too many people watching this show.”

Kirkman can afford to joke about ratings. The pilot episode of The Walking Dead — which was helmed by Shawshank Redemption‘s Frank Darabont — garnered an very impressive audience of 5.3 million viewers. Unsurprisingly, AMC announced a week ago that it was ordering a second season of the show, which will comprise 13 episodes, as opposed to the current run of six.

After the jump, Kirkman talks about last night’s episode, “Tell It to the Frogs,” the Rick-Lori-Shane love triangle, and, why he can’t be blamed for that Miss Piggy-oral sex gag.

Under-Appreciated Entertainer of the Year: Khloe Kardashian? Sam Rockwell? Yvette Nicole Brown? The Avett Brothers?

Underappreciated-Entertainers-7BImage Credit: Industrial Light and Magic; E! Network; Andrew Durham/Bravo

Sam Rockwell played Justin Hammer, kind of an evil version of Tony Stark, in Iron Man 2. Patrick Wilson was the gleefully sinister FBI Agent Lynch in The A-Team. Both actors were overshadowed by the all the summer-movie bombast. (Also not helping matters for Rockwell: there were an estimated fifty villains in Iron Man 2.) But EW readers (that’s you!) thought that both roles deserve more attention. Now we’re throwing them in the Under-appreciated Entertainer of the Year Bracket Game. You know the rules, PopWatchers. It’s just like the Thunderdome. Two men enter. Only one man leaves.

As we cruise into the second week of this tournament of should-be-champions, we’re discovering that one of the easiest ways to be under-appreciated is to be stuck in the middle of other, louder performers. That’s especially true in today’s TV match-up. Yvette Nicole Brown plays middle-aged divorcée Shirley on Community. Eden Sher plays middle daughter Sue on a show appropriately named The Middle. Over in the world of music, Elliot Yamin came in third back in American Idol season 5 (the year that Taylor Freaking Hicks won!), while the Avett Brothers mix together a whole laundry list of genres — folk, indie rock, folk rock, indie folk — that are practically underrated by definition.

But don’t forget about our beloved reality TV personalities. Rodger Berman tries to manage his wife’s company/insanity on The Rachel Zoe Project. Khloé Kardashian regularly has to set herself apart from her fellow sisters (you know, the pregnant one and the proud feminist).  Click here to check out our entire bracket of 64 reader-picked competitors, then cast your ballot on Round 1, Day 7′s match-ups after the jump.

'Dancing With the Stars': Could Bristol Palin actually win?!? TV Insiders look into disco-crystal ball on podcast

Bristol Palin may look like she doesn’t even want to be there half the time, but apparently lots of other people must want her on Dancing With the Stars, because the “teen activist” keeps on surviving week after week when other, clearly better dancers are shows the door. Which leads to many questions: How is this happening? Are fans of her politician mother voting along party lines for daughter Palin in droves? And could Bristol actually … gulp … win? Annie Barrett and Michael Slezak join me on the always non-partisan TV Insiders podcast to break it all down while also examining the big verbal dust-up between sassy Maks and sometimes lucid Carrie Ann. Plus: Someone admits to actually liking Survivor: Nicaragua‘s NaOnka, we grade the first week of Conan O’Brien’s new TBS talk show, and give our picks for the funniest Modern Family cast member. You can download all the insanity straight to your mp3 player, or click on the video player below to enjoy all the podcast magic on your screen right here, right now. And if you have a question for the TV Insiders, you can tweet it to @EWDaltonRoss. So get your dancing shoes on, click on the video below, and we’re off! READ FULL STORY »

Tracy Morgan paints HBO 'Black and Blue': His funniest jokes here

Filed under: About Last Night, TV and tagged: ,

Last night HBO aired Tracy Morgan’s first stand-up special on the channel, Black and Blue. Performing at New York City’s Apollo Theater, the 30 Rock star let his demented brand of humor loose on the crowd. His jokes hit on everything from politics and airport security to borderline inappropriate quips we can’t include here. Audience members doubled over in laughter. Yup, he was that funny.

The special can be replayed through HBO’s On Demand feature. Here are a few of a Morgan’s most hilarious jokes (with some of the more colorful language omitted) from last night.

Tracy on getting old
“You know when you’re getting old. Because when you’re young, when you pee that s*** comes out strong. When you get old, when you pee, you’ve got to hold the … wall [and wait].”

On America’s relationship with drugs
“This whole country was founded on cocaine. The four fathers. All four of them did drugs, coke. What … is Ben Franklin standing outside in the rain with a kite for? That’s coke. And Abraham Lincoln getting shot in the head? That was a bad coke deal.”

On talking to former Secretary of State Colin Powell at the White House Correspondents Dinner last spring right after meeting President Barack Obama, who made him bawl like a child.
“I went back to my table and looked to my left. Colin Powell knocked over two people getting to me. And he ran up to me a hugged me. He grabbed me. And he said, “Me and my wife, we love you. You make us laugh so much.” And I said, “Sorry, sir, for putting snot on your jacket.” That’s the first thing I said to him. I said, “I’m overwhelmed. I’m trying to get it together.” He said, “Oh, don’t worry, Tracy. I love you.” And then I said, “Sir, I hope you don’t get mad at me if I tell people you’re my biological father.” He looked at me [like I was crazy] and walked … off.”

Did you catch Black and Blue last night? Let us know what you thought.

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' countdown: Remembering 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'

EW-cover-Harry-Potter-614Once upon a time (in 2001, to be exact), there was an 11-year-old boy with a lightening bolt scar who was unaware of his extraordinary powers. And I’m not just talking his soon-to-be-discovered magical prowess, but also his jaw-dropping power to inspire millions of fans young and old to excitedly storm their local theaters to catch the first showing of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. (The experience of seeing the film for the first time was priceless for many, and it certainly paid off for Warner Bros.: The studio bagged a record-breaking $33.3 million during the first day, beating the one-day record previously held by Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, and $90 million during the movie’s opening weekend.) It’s appropriate that J.K. Rowling’s boy-wizard creation is nicknamed “the boy who lived” — Harry Potter might have survived Voldemort’s attack on his parents, but he’s also boasted incredible longevity on the big screen, continuing to cement himself as the beloved, albeit scarred, face of one of Hollywood’s most enchanting juggernaut franchises.

So, in anticipation of the Nov. 19 release of part one of the franchise’s final film — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — we’ve decided to take a look back at the movie that chronicled the bespeckled boy-wizard’s first trip to Hogwarts: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. READ FULL STORY »

If you were sitting around hoping for broader humor on Nickelodeon’s iCarly, the wait is over. The two meet up and “battle” at WebiCon when they both show up dressed as avatars from their favorite medieval-themed video game.

“Jack Black is one of the funniest people I know, and it was wonderful working with him again,” said Cosgrove.

This Week on Stage: The secret word is fun in Pee-wee Herman's Broadway debut

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

pee-wee-hermanImage Credit: Jeff VespaIt was a relatively busy week on the Great White Way. The producers of Next to Normal announced that the hit musical will have its last bipolar breakdown in January. The always entertaining Harvey Fierstein agreed to join the Broadway cast of La Cage Aux Folles in February, playing the cross-dressing Albin. And there were two big openings: The Pee-wee Herman Show, which made its way to the Big Apple after a run in L.A. earlier this year, and Colin Quinn Long Story Short, the one-man show from former SNL comedian Colin Quinn that moved uptown after an Off Broadway run earlier this year. We reviewed both here on EW.com. Here, the highlights:

The Pee-wee Herman Show: EW film critic Lisa Schwarzbaum loved the new stage incarnation of Pee-wee, and gave the production a solid A–: “The reunion of Pee-wee and his pals from the great TV show Pee-wee’s Playhouse is staged with modern brio by director Alex Timbers (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), who produces a dazzling acid ride of color, light, goofy anarchy, punchy video clips, and juicy sound effects,” she wrote. “Throughout, the secret word is fun.”

Colin Quinn Long Story Short: I thought former SNL comedian Colin Quinn did a decent job in bringing his solo show about the history of the world’s empires to the Broadway stage: “Now arriving on the Great White Way, Long Story Short manages to hold on to its small-scale appeal,” I wrote in a grade-B review, “while also comfortably filling a much larger stage.”
