'Glee' star Harry Shum Jr. talks his abs: 'I have to do constant crunches to live up to the hype'

This season, Glee‘s Harry Shum Jr. has seen an increase in screen time for his character Mike Chang — and a slight decrease in clothing. Mike’s abs have been a recurring joke on the show — although they’re more enviable than laughable — but Shum Jr. says its one that he’s taking very seriously. “Of course now there is pressure not to let myself go,” he says. “I have to do constant crunches to live up to the hype. In fact, I’m doing them right now. If I don’t, I’m sure that will just as easily become a punchline.”

Shum Jr. says that for the near future, Mike and Tina look to remain a couple, and he even gave us a peek into Glee‘s plans for the holidays. Says Shum Jr., “We do have a holiday episode that is full of your favorite holiday songs. The episode really focuses in on what the holiday spirit means to each of us and Sue causes a ruckus per usual. She is a bit of a Grinch during the holidays.” (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

'Episodes' trailer: Matt LeBlanc returns to TV in a big way

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

The trailer for Matt LeBlanc’s first TV show since Joey, Showtime’s Episodes (premiering Jan. 9), gets right to the set-up: A British husband-and-wife writing team foolishly believes an American TV exec when he says he loves their award-winning show and wants to bring it across the pond as scripted. When they get to Hollywood, they find out the suit has never seen their series and the network has some suggestions — like casting Matt LeBlanc as the erudite head master of a boys boarding school. The twist — LeBlanc plays “Matt LeBlanc” — isn’t exactly rare these days, and it feels like it’s been a while since America has butchered a British show as badly as Coupling. But for me, the trailer starts clicking when we come to learn that the husband warms to LeBlanc (after LeBlanc shows him his penis, “It’s enormous, like a sea creature, like something of Jules Verne”) and the wife thinks he’s an infant. That LeBlanc will drive a wedge between the couple as he’s ruining their show — that’s fun! Watch the trailer below. Does it look like a hit? At least something that will keep talk shows from making fun of him? Tell me you didn’t miss the look LeBlanc flashes right at the end. READ FULL STORY »

PBS edits Tina Fey joke about Sarah Palin. Your move, Liz Lemon.

Tina Fey’s joke about Sarah Palin and conservative female politicians was edited by PBS during Sunday’s broadcast of the Mark Twain Prize ceremony. While accepting the prestigious comedy award, Fey said, “And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women — except, of course, those who will end up, you know, like, paying for their own rape kit ‘n’ stuff. But for everybody else, it’s a win-win. Unless you’re a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years — whatever. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us. Unless you believe in evolution. You know what? Actually, I take it back. The whole thing’s a disaster.” The entire unedited video can be viewed below (on PBS’s official web site), and the crucial remarks begin at the 12:30 mark: READ FULL STORY »

Robin Sparkles returned -- but Barney had the best moment on 'HIMYM' last night

himym-robin-sparkles-jessica-glitterImage Credit: Ron P. Jaffe/FoxLast night’s How I Met Your Mother featured the long-awaited return of Robin Sparkles, this time with her former sidekick Jessica Glitter (played by Pussycat Doll/Dancing With the Stars winner Nicole Scherzinger). It also introduced a strange angle to the Robin Sparkles backstory: Her Canadian kids’ show was super porn-y back in the day. A big bowl of pornflakes, as Barney put it. What happened to the blissful innocence of “Let’s Go To the Mall”? I just don’t think the beaver song is a worthy successor to that or to “Sandcastles in the Sand.” Sigh.

But all was not lost! Because last night contained the best Neil Patrick Harris/Barney moment in I don’t know how long: rattling off the list of reality show farewell lines. I could listen to him say “sashay away” pretty much forever.

What’d you think of Jessica Glitter, PopWatchers? Did you think the porn jokes were just kind of cheap, or were you enjoying the pornucopia? And what was your favorite obscure reality show getting an adios line in Barney’s speech?

'Cars 2' trailer: Will Doc Hudson make a cameo?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

So last month’s Cars 2 teaser wasn’t a prank after all: Lightning McQueen and his rusty pal, Mater, actually steer into the world of espionage in the sequel to Pixar’s 2006 smash. The new trailer for Cars 2 has some clues, with McQueen trading the good ol’ boy NASCAR circuit for international Grand Prix racing. Somehow, this leads to intrigue when Mater and McQueen are confused for master spies, North by Northwest style. Yes, that’s Michael Caine as British operative, Finn MacMissile. READ FULL STORY »

'Harry Potter': The great Butterbeer debate

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

My kids had a few days off from the school the other week, so I did what any certified nerd/father would do in such a situation and brought them down to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park at Universal Orlando. Wands were purchased, scary rides were ridden, and an absurd amount of photographs were taken. But also… CONTROVERSY! Before heading down there, I learned that there were not one, but two different kinds of Butterbeer for sale: “cold” and “frozen.” In the Harry Potter books, the drink is served either cold or hot, but seeing as how Orlando is already hot enough, park developers seemed to have gone the frozen slushie route instead to cool off sweaty patrons in the sweltering days of summer. I polled some followers on Twitter (@EWDaltonRoss) who had already been there and sampled the beverages, and the responses were pretty evenly divided between the two choices. So there was only one clear option — drink them both! And now, the taste test results are in: Three of us clearly preferred the “cold” version (a delightful blend of cream soda and butterscotch) with only my contrarian 7-year-old daughter choosing the frozen. It should be noted here that Butterbeer at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is 100 percent non-alcoholic. At least I think it is. I guess I should have double-checked that with someone first. (The kids did seem a little wobbly after, or maybe that was just due to the jarring Forbidden Journey ride.) Anyhoo! I now pose the question to all who have been down to the park or are planning to go soon. Which version of Butterbeer do you prefer or are planning to order? Make your voice heard in our poll below. Vote early! Vote often!

'Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark' images: And you thought Emo Spider-man was bizarre!

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark seems like a lunatic proposal– are any fanbases more distant than comic book geeks and Broadway mavens? At best, it could have been a Shrek: The Musical!-style cash grab. But director Julie Taymor is known for dementedly twisted theatrical visions. Also, Bono and the Edge are writing the music, and there aren’t any iPods in sight! (I don’t even think Bono knows who Spider-Man is. I’m convinced that the Edge just told him they were writing a musical about Abraham Lincoln or Jesus or something.) Now, Annie Leibovitz has taken some photos for Vogue of the cast and set, which seem to confirm that this might very well be the most bizarre take on the Spider-Man mythos ever. (Crazier than Spider-Man: 2099. Crazier than that time Peter Parker went crazy and didn’t take off his costume for five months.)

Just how insane are we talking about? Cripes, look at that picture up there! The Green Goblin looks like an actual flying goblin, Mary Jane is dressed completely in red, and the overall aesthetic suggests Hieronymus Bosch crossed with a Pink Floyd album cover. Other pictures introduce a bizarre metallic villain named Swiss Miss (purely invented for the musical). These pictures make me wish that I was still a kid, so I could go see Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and have nightmares about it for the rest of my life.

PopWatchers, have these pics made you more excited for Turn Off the Dark? I’m pretty stoked to see that Taymor is so set on putting her own spin on the material. (Although… Swiss Miss?)

Microsoft could sell 5 million Kinects by the end of the year

Filed under: Gadgets, Videogames and tagged: , , ,

Xbox360S_KinectMicrosoft has officially sold over 1 million Kinects since the device’s release 10 days ago, and the company says that it’s on track to sell 5 million worldwide by the end of the year. For a little perspective, Sony Move sold about 2.5 million units in the U.S. and Europe in 30 days; Apple sold 1 million iPads in the U.S. within a month of its launch. There are around 70 million Wiis out there in the world, but that’s been on shelves (flying off shelves?) for almost four years.

What’s fueling early adoption here? Well, most importantly, Kinect is pretty damn fun. Who doesn’t like to pretend to whitewater raft in his or her own living room? I defy you to find such a stone-souled person. Secondly, though, is that Kinect appeals to and is geared towards the same nontraditional gamers that Wii so effectively targeted. Have you noticed how many kids and women are in the ads for Kinect? That’s not a coincidence. Kinect comes bundled with Kinect Adventures, a family-friendly jump-around game that’s a total blast. That’s also not a coincidence. Giveaways on both Oprah and Ellen? Gee, I wonder who watches those shows! READ FULL STORY »

'Brothers & Sisters' scoop: Balthazar Getty's new galpal is...

getty-buonoImage Credit: Scott Garfield/ABC; Tatiana Beller/PR PhotosThe Walker Family better get ready for some fireworks! EW has learned that when Balthazar Getty’s Tommy returns home for the show’s 100th episode in January, he’ll bring along a feisty new lady love named Rose. She’s played by the gorgeous Cara Buono, best known for her depiction of Faye Miller in Mad Men.

“She is a hot-headed Italian, and I come home after having been gone for a while,” Getty told EW while attending a red carpet event earlier last weekend. “We’ve all been there, right?”

Getty and Buono are expected to appear in at least three episodes this season, with the possibility of more. Getty’s been missing in action this year; viewers are supposed to think his character has been up in Seattle to be closer to his daughter. The actor returns to the drama’s Los Angeles set today. “We have something really funny in store,” said Getty. “I told them, if I come back, let’s do something big. Let’s do something fun.”

So what excites Getty most about returning to the ABC drama?  “Just to bully Matthew [Rhys] and Dave [Annable] probably. To try to distract them while they’re acting.” – With additional reporting from Nicholas White
