Gwyneth Paltrow brings great ratings to 'Glee,' viewers flock to 'Dancing with the Stars' to see next elimination

Tuesday-RatingsImage Credit: Adam Rose/Fox; Adam Larkey/ABCA great night for Fox, a bad one for Brandy: Fox led on Tuesday among adults 18-49 (3.6 rating/10 share) thanks to a much-anticipated appearance by Gwyneth Paltrow on Glee, according to preliminary results. The network also took the night among adults 18-34 and teens.

Glee earned a 4.9/14 in the demo — up 7 percent from last week’s telecast. It averaged 11.6 million viewers. Such a swell lead-in was a boon to Raising Hope, which earned a 2.7/7 — up 8 percent versus last week – and attracted 6.1 million. The network aired a repeat of the comedy at 9:30, which earned a 1.8/5. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million.

CBS was second in the adult demo with a 3.1/9, with the always strong NCIS earning a 3.9/11 and averaging 19.3 million. NCIS: Los Angeles earned a 3.3/9 and 15.7 million viewers, followed by The Good Wife (2.2/6, 11.6 million).

NBC was third for the night in the demo (2.3/6) because of a totally average performance by The Biggest Loser (2.5/7, up 4%). It lured 6.9 million. Parenthood (1.8/5) delivered its lowest rating ever, down — 14 percent from last week’s episode, and averaged 4.7 million. ABC was fourth in the demo with a 2.2/6, with No Ordinary Family posting its lowest rating to date (1.7/5, 6.6 million). Dancing with the Stars - which sent Brandy packing – earned a 3.3/9 and 17.2 million. Detroit 1-8-7 got a 1.8/5 and 8.3 million.

On the CW, One Tree Hill lured its biggest audience since Oct. 5 (1.9 million) and was up 20 percent versus last week in adults 18-34.  Life Unexpected attracted 1.3 million.

In the total viewer race, CBS won the night with 15.6 million, followed by ABC (10.7 million), Fox (8.3 million), NBC (6.1 million, and the CW (1.6 million). Oh, and just so you know – Univision beat the CW again with 4 million viewers.

'The Good Wife' actually got an aspect of the Internet right

Last night’s episode of The Good Wife, in addition to being another terrific episode, featured one thing that really stood out to me: Not Miranda Cosgrove (who was great!), not Kalinda’s consistently chic wardrobe (soooo chic-and-ass-kicky). Nope, what struck me was that the show managed to feature an aspect Internet culture in a way that was actually accurate and appropriate. This is like seeing a primetime unicorn!

The episode included a minor subplot about teenager Grace watching those CGI recreations from that Taiwanese news show — recall the one where Snooki hits President Obama with a wine bottle, or the one that recreated Tiger Woods’ car crash last year, etc. On The Good Wife, Grace watched one about a DUI-happy starlet and one about her dad’s sex scandal, and it’s so dead-on I kind of can’t believe it: READ FULL STORY »

Jessica Simpson's latest release: Her engagement. What should come next?

Jessica-SimpsonImage Credit: Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesJessica Simpson has made a thoroughly postmodern career of living her personal life for public consumption. One assumes she didn’t set out to do so, but even from the very start of her teen pop career, she was better known for her public declarations of virginity than for her music. (When’s the last time you spun “I Think I’m in Love With You” on the old iPod?) Then she finally hit superstardom as a reality star on MTV’s surprise hit Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica, and all bets were off. She was so watchable as her unvarnished self that even her god-given voice would never again be able to compete with the prospect of, say, hearing her debate the difference between chicken and fish.

Now, five years, a divorce from Nick Lachey, and countless tabloid covers later, her life still trumps her work. Case in point, her announcement this week that she’s engaged to her boyfriend of five months, ex-NFL player Eric Johnson. The woman, you must admit, has an uncanny knack for timing: Not only does the surprise betrothal come just as she’s releasing a Christmas album, but also a week after ex Lachey popped the question to his longtime love, Vanessa Minnillo. Gossip blog speculation has run predictably rampant, analyzing everything from whether she bought her own ruby engagement ring to whether she’s trying to beat Lachey to the altar to whether she’s headed for financial ruin for reportedly not wanting a prenup. I choose to believe in true love and thus hope for nothing but the best from Simpson’s impending union; but if cynics were right, and this were some kind of publicity move, it would be pretty brilliant. And it wouldn’t be the first brilliant PR move from her: She turned mean media scrutiny of her weight into several magazine cover stories about body image and even a VH1 documentary show, The Price of Beauty. She cemented the media-dating-industrial-complex of John Mayer. She convinced someone a line of edible beauty products was a good idea. She designs surprisingly great, affordable shoes.

The real question: Is there any chance for her entertainment career to reflect the same brilliance at this point? READ FULL STORY »

Anne Hathaway's 'SNL' promos: Braaaains!

Anne Hathaway is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, and the new goofy promos are out. Bill Hader has been on fire so far this season (Alan Alda impression FTW), and these promos are appropriately silly and fun. Hathaway’s kind of the perfect style of host: bright, not self-conscious, and talented. Man, some people have all the luck. READ FULL STORY »

Man pulls gun on TV over Bristol Palin's 'DWTS' run

Bristol-DWTSImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABCWe’d hate to see what he would’ve done last night… Steven N. Cowan, a 67-year-old man from Vermont, Wis., fired a shotgun at the television in his house Monday evening while watching the performance night of Dancing With the Stars. Dane County police were called to the residence after Cowan’s wife fled their home and phoned saying her husband, who authorities believe suffers from bipolar disorder, was intoxicated, armed, and threatening to commit suicide. The trigger for the incident was Cowan’s belief (and anger) that Bristol Palin was on the show because of her famous politician mother instead of her dancing ability. Tactical response and hostage negotiation teams arrived on the scene, and it took them roughly 15 hours to coax Mr. Cowan out of the home. He’s been charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, the Dane County Sheriff’s office confirms to EW.

Now we don’t want to make light of this situation. We’re happy to hear that his wife was unharmed and are assuming he’ll get the psychological help he needs to live a happier life. But it does seem like a good time to confess whether you’ve ever struck out at your TV. I have yelled at it, but I’ve never thrown anything at it. I love my flatscreen too much to hurt him. You?

Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy Fallon (as Neil Young) cover 'Whip My Hair'

Jimmy Fallon devoted last night’s Late Night to Bruce Springsteen, and the Boss joined Fallon (who impersonated Neil Young) in a cover of Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair.” Watch it below. We’ve also embedded the entire episode, basically because no one is cooler than Bruce. The two talk about Fallon’s “Born to Run” Emmy opening, Springsteen confers with a diehard fan in the audience to double-check that he’s right when he says that one particular concert of his had never been bootlegged, and he explains the stories behind a recent video of him singing in a Jersey bar and a photograph of him sitting on a bench with an engaged couple. And that’s just in the first interview segment. Springsteen also performs “Because the Night” and “Save My Love” with Steven Van Zandt and the Roots. Good times.

Springsteen also confirms that his ear can distinguish between “Boooo” and “Bruuuce.” I’ll admit the first time I saw him in concert, I couldn’t. You? READ FULL STORY »

'Prom' First Look: Aimee Teegarden + hot newcomer = photo win!

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

Julie Taylor might be kickin’ it at college on Friday Night Lights, but in the upcoming Walt Disney movie Prom, Aimee Teegarden finds herself back in high school — and in very good(-looking!) company, based on this exclusive first look at the film.

In the flick, set for theatrical release on April 29, we follow teen couples on the bumpy and complicated road to the prom — a premise anchored, of course, by a will-they-or-won’t-they twosome played by Teegarden and newcomer Thomas McDonell. (And — if teen movie status does not betray us — they will end up together, right?) Best of all, I have the warm and fuzzies thanks to the ’80s teen movie vibe emanating from the photo of the pair in a warehouse-looking room and the Love, Actually nod in the photo of the best prom invite ever. Count me in!

But what about you, PopWatchers? Do you like the looks of Prom? (See two more exclusive pictures after the jump!) Are you excited that you’ll get to see TV faves Yin Chang (Nelly Yuki from Gossip Girl) and Nicholas Braun (10 Things I Hate About You TV series, Sky High) on the big screen? READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: Talking to your kids about 'Star Wars'

It’s something every parent is going to have to face sooner or later, especially if you don’t want them to learn about it on the playground: When do you talk to your kid about Star Wars? What do you tell them? How do you instill your Star Wars values — and not let someone convince them that Jar Jar Binks is okay? READ FULL STORY »

Happy National Unfriend Day!

Filed under: TV and tagged: ,

Happy National Unfriend Day, PopWatchers! Jimmy Kimmel created this dubious holiday to restore integrity to the word “friend” and encourage people to “cut out some of the friend fat in your life.” NUD, guided by its declaration of indefriendence, reminds us that “all men are not created equal. Some men are very annoying.” Heh.

“Remember five years ago when no one was on Facebook, and you didn’t know what the guy you took high school biology with was having for lunch? Remember how that was fine? Let’s go back to that,” Kimmel joked. But it’s almost too true! That really was fine, those dark days. READ FULL STORY »
