Like untold millions of other proud Americans, I’m going to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows this weekend. I’ve already purchased my tickets, which (living in New York City) cost $13 a piece, plus a pre-release surcharge. If I wanted to spring for IMAX tickets, it would cost $18. That is ridiculous — especially since, like most moviegoers, I’m incapable of enjoying a movie without a bag of (overpriced) popcorn and a medium cup of cherry coke. And I’m just seeing the movie with my girlfriend. What’s a family of four to do? Now, admittedly, New York prices are notoriously expensive, but if you ask me, theater tickets all over the country are too goshdarn pricey. Especially considering all the added charges for (mostly awful) 3-D movies, isn’t it time we ask ourselves: Are swelling ticket prices ruining the moviegoing experience? READ FULL STORY »

'Mob Wives' coming to VH1: A real-life 'Sopranos,' or just another 'Growing Up Gotti'?
The Weinstein Company has announced plans to produce Mob Wives, a new reality series created by Jennifer Graziano. The 10-episode series has been picked up by VH1 and will premiere in March 2011. The show is also backed by Ben Silverman of Electus, whose past credits include Ugly Betty and The Office.
According to a press release, Mob Wives will follow four women “allegedly” associated with members of the mafia, who are moving on after their husbands or fathers are sent to prison. The title alone makes me think of Growing Up Gotti, the A&E reality series that introduced us to Victoria, daughter of longtime mafia boss John Gotti, her three sons, and her Rapunzel-esque hair. Two seasons of their daily family life, as seen from their palatial Long Island home, and occasional hijinks were entertaining enough, but nothing groundbreaking — although we do need to give credit to Victoria’s sons for promoting blow outs all the way back in 2004, long before Pauly D beat the beat up on Jersey Shore. Based on TWC’s announcement, Mob Wives aims to show us the lives of those affected by organized crime, which is intriguing, but how much of the alleged mob members will we see? What kind of access will be available in prison? Too much focus on the daily lives of these women risks treading awfully close to Real Housewives territory, which we are certainly not lacking on television right now.
What do you think, Pop Watchers? Does Mob Wives sound like a hit? Or would you be more interested if the show followed the actual members of the mob, as opposed to just their families? Considering all of the fictional mob movies and TV shows (ahem, The Sopranos), I’d be most interested in seeing the real business of organized crime and those behind it, but something tells me reality show cameras might not be able to get that kind of inside information.
What is your best worst movie? ('Showgirls'? 'Glitter'? 'The Room'?) Vote here!

Yesterday, while discussing this week’s DVD release of the documentary Best Worst Movie — which centers on the production of Troll 2 – we wondered if Claudio Fragasso’s 1990 crapterpiece really did deserve the title of cinema’s Best Worst Movie. So we asked you, and, goodness did you have a lot to say on the matter. Based on your comments, these nine movies seemed to emerge as the strongest contenders for the movie so eye-searingly, once-in-a-lifetime awful, it physically warps the fabric of space-time and simply, paradoxically, demands to be seen. So take our poll, vote for your most-least favorite, and then defend your choice in the comments! READ FULL STORY »
What's the Greatest Syndie Sitcom of All Time?
Image Credit: Greg Gayne/Warner Bros. Two and a Half Men will be on the air for at least another decade — in syndication. (Time to process, and… you’re back.) The show has been renewed through 2021 by Tribune Broadcasting and Sinclair Broadcast Group, whose markets represent nearly half of the country. The show has been the top-rated comedy in syndication in both adults 25-54 and households for more than three years. Is this the Greatest Syndie Sitcom of All Time? Let’s take nominations. To be clear: We’re not talking about naming the greatest sitcom, necessarily. We’re talking about which syndicated sitcom you could (and did) watch every day at, say, 7 p.m., and never get tired of it.
I’m never home at that hour now, but a few years ago, I took a three-month leave and lived with my parents while my father went through chemo and nested in the living room recliner. Having dinner while watching Everybody Loves Raymond reruns became our ritual. We’d watch one episode on one station, then I’d flip channels, and we’d watch another. It’s a sentimental pick, but Raymond‘s got my vote. What gets yours?
Ex-flight attendant Steven Slater has a bad rap (in more ways than one)
A couple months ago, we asked what notorious JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater should do after officially parting ways with his employer. The near-clairvoyant Keith Staskiewicz predicted that the steamed stew had a future as an ad pitchman. Wrong! The correct answer was: Rapping pitchman. MC Slater in the hizzouse! READ FULL STORY »
Oksana Grigorieva on Mel Gibson: 'This is a person who's losing control.'
Image Credit: CNNOksana Grigorieva, Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend, went on Larry King Live last night and talked about her bitter breakup and custody battle with Gibson over their 1-year-old daughter, Lucia. She told King about the events of Jan. 6, when she claims Gibson assaulted her while she held their daughter in her arms, and explained her reasons for taping their subsequent conversations. “I thought, ‘I’m not going to live through the night,’ ” said Grigorieva, who feared Gibson could come after her. But she also claimed she taped Gibson because she wanted to help him; she wanted an audio record that she could then play for him to help him see that he needed help.
