Here come the Christmas commercials: Bah, humbug

I’d like to take this time to tell my wife that she will not be receiving a Lexus or a diamond for Christmas. Read the full post.

For all you Target ad haters, they are obviously doing their job. You have all watched the commercials. BINGO!!! Job Well Done ad agency!!!

I’m fascinated by the White Diamonds commercials. They still pull out the 20 year old Elizabeth Taylor version. Do they think we think she still looks like that??

My favorite commercials are the ones that ask: Did you get what you really want this Christmas? And proceed to show great disappointment of the recipient…any easy solution offered…Come to —–Store for their Annual After X-Mas Sale. Best of all, these of course start in just a few days! UGH!

“Everything you wanted but didn’t get for Christmas is on sale now at Sears.”

I LOVE that Folger’s commercial from the ’80s with Peter coming home for Christmas to see his parents. He might have finished his semester in college or might have be on his own with his career in another state 500 to 1000 miles away. That was so common in the ’80s with adult children to do, to move out on your own in your early 20s. That shows that you still keep up and come home to see your parents for Christmas even if you moved out. Very memorable commercial to me! Peter had to be 21 or 22 in that ad.

Ronco and K-tel commercials in 1978 and 1979! I despised and hated those commercials selling those silly products for Christmas gifts! They did that for 2 or 3 consecutive Christmases until they stopped in Christmas 1980!

Totally off the Christmas Topic, but does anyone remember the old AT&T long distance commercial “Joey called just to say I love you, Mom”?

Made me cry every time–Hell, I tearing up just thinking about it.

    • Scott

I LOVED that AT&T commercial, too! What about the Coca-cola commercial where the grandfather plants the pinecone @ Rockefeller Center and waters it with a Coke and then brings the kid back AFTER they put up the tree?!!

It’s not exactly a ‘Christmas commercial’ but I guess because perfume is such a hot seller at Christmas (?) they dust off the old Liz Taylor White Diamonds commercial from 25 (?) years ago this time each year and I, for one, always find myself in the holiday spirit when Liz says ‘these have always brought me luck!’ (but why someone would want to smell like Liz Taylor circa 1985 is beyond me)

love the coca-cola polar bear/seal commercials…and yes, i know a real life encounter would end much differently, but i love them just the same.

The worst have to be the Hyundai commercials with the very odd band singing carrols. I hate Christmas carrols, and to have to listen to them when performed by people who sound like they are hopped up on crack is even more of an affront.

The Stetson Cologne ones would always get me. It was some dude riding on a horse in a snowy field, with his lovely lady clinging to his back. The music they played was so ridiculous. It was a chorus singing “Easy for You” I think. The whole scene was so improbable.

My favorite; The Hershey’s Kisses Christmas Commercial.Plain ,simple and guilt-trip free.

  • debbie

My favorite ads that they don’t (sadly) air any more were the Norelco ads with the Santa riding down the snowy hill on the razor. For me it was never officially Christmas until I saw those ads :)

Not a Christmass comercial but this one is so annoying-Turn the tub around!!!
