Deathly Hallows was emotional, effective, and utterly unsurprising — except for that one CGI, comic-shaded shadow puppet sequence that told the tale of the Three Brothers. Who else was blindsided/pleased by that? It broke up the gray, dreary monotony of the the search beautifully, and was so well-realized that if Hermione hadn’t been narrating, I might have thought I wandered into another movie.
The scene comes from Ben Hibon, an award-winning Swiss animator and director whose exquisitely warped animation style has been employed in big budget PS3 games like Heavenly Sword and weird, experimental shooter Wii games like Killer7.
We aren’t the only one’s who’ve noticed Hibon’s touch — He was just brought on board as a director for the dark fantasy thriller Pan, which was formerly one of Guillermo Del Toro’s insane medley of latent projects. Check out more of Hibon’s work after the jump.
Hibon also directed a short for MTV Asia’s awards show called Codehunters, a sci-fi/western that tells the story of a group of misfit warriors:
And here’s an animation sequence that was created as background/lore for Heavenly Sword:
What do you think, PopWatchers? Is it enough to get you excited about Pan?

I loved that animated moment in deathly hallows. Loved the fact that they just didn’t “tell” the story, made it much more real that way.
I agree. That animated sequence was so beautiful and I love the fact that they didn’t cast real life actors to show the story and also that they didn’t just have the camera on Hermione the whole time while she was reading. That was a brilliant way for them to do that. I was captivated the whole time.
I was blindsided/pleased by the animation. It worked better to see the story rather than just having Hermione read it aloud. I thought it was cool
He should recreate some of Harrys scariest and most exciting moments in that animation. Now that would be awesome!
Anyone else really distracted in the Deathly Hallows story by the fact that Death looked like General Grievous from Star Wars Clone Wars?
I thought so too, but it wasn’t distracting.
That was an outstanding sequence in a very good film. Everything about the sequence of “The Three Brothers” worked. Kudos to the choice of animator, and the end result.
I thought that animated sequence was beautifully done. It was actually one of my favorite moments from the whole movie. This is totally random, but it actually kind of reminded me of a scene from the final season of ‘Buffy’. There was an episode where Buffy and friends opened a bag belonging to a previous slayer, and it had all these metal shadow figures that were projected onto a wall to tell a story about the first slayer. Like I said, random…
um just a random factoid: Killer7 was NOT for the wii, it was for the ps2 and GameCube.
If you gotta have a lump of exposition, this is the way to do it. Stylish and wonderful.
The Tale of the Three Brothers was one of my favorite parts of the movie. I loved the animation!
I was so impressed by the animation. They had to do something there (they couldn’t have had Hermione read while everyone else just stared at her). It could have been a throwaway sequence, but instead it was interesting, beautiful, and unique.
I loved the whole movie but have to admit that when it was over, this animation sequence was what I kept going back to. It was really really beautiful.
the three bros story was my fav part of the movie. the animation was beautiful!
It was an incredible and surprising part of what was already an incredible movie. Kudos to Mr. Hibon for his amazing creativity, and to everyone on the movie for thinking outside the box on this one!
Loved it. Did anybody else notice that it wasn’t scored? The animation carried all of that dark suspense without music. Amazing.
Wow, I just realized that! It was just a few sound effects here and there…. Incredible….
That sequence in HP7 was incredible, everyone i know who’s seen it has made comment on it. Frankly the whole movie was a tasty treat, and the animation was like frosting on top.
