The best change would be cancellation
If you were a network executive with the highest-rated show (for years running, mind you!) on your roster, would you cancel it? No, you’d tweak it to try and boost viewership, but why cancel a cash cow?
I am looking forward to all the changes and I only hope that there is a good group of singers to be excited about this year. I was sooooo disappointed by last year that the show can only improve and not get worse, well, one can dream, right?
I must have missed something – If Idol is moving to Thursday at 8 what is happening to Bones?
Bones will follow Idol on Thursdays, after the run of Human Target is over.
Jason Castro sang “Hallelujah” in the semifinals, right? And David Archuleta, “Imagine?” The semifinals seem kind of important…
I agree with all your educated opinions slezal except for one: cutting the semi round table. I am reflecting back on the wonderful singers that were eliminated too early in the game (you have mentioned them yourself– alex lambert et at. while keepting mr beautiful eyes tim). Their elimination dissapointed not only you and me but the entire AI production. Season 9 could have been much better if the judges had more control in the top 12 selection process. I haven’t watched the last season of so you think you can dance but in previous seasons i loved the way they did it– the audience picked (or didn’t vote for) the bottom 3, and the judges based on their acquaintance with the contestants decided who goes home. it totally worked out.
No way on Earth I would watch Idol instead of Grey’s Anatomy or the NBC comedies or survivor. This is one viewer they have lost!
It sounds like Nigel is really trying to kill the show, yes, even though who knows how it’s going to go witout Simon. Dancers really c’mon now. Look at like Carrie & Kelly who don’t need & use dancers on their tours & to make the shows great. Their voices does it all.
To me it seems like Nigel is trying to out X-Factor the X-Factor before it gets to American TV. X-Factor has no semi-final round, and their live performances are production numbers with staging and dancers. As for the move to Thursday I’ll definitely be putting it on the DVR if that. I’d rather watch the current line up of stuff that’s on Thursday instead of the results show.
Love your article Michael. I think no matter what they try to do,it’s about finding and nurturing talent and in my opinion, instruments are very much a part of good talent,as well as songwriting,it’s called MUSIC,Nigel! So AI, find contestants who are talented, know who they are and let THEM shine,it’s a creative process,we’ll see. BTW, David Cook best AI EVER,THANK YOU,GINA in NJ
Michael, I love you.
I think this elimination fo the top 24 sounds like what happened on SYTYCD last season. I do not watch Idol until about the last five contestants. I can tell you, that was not a change for the better on my favorite dancing show though.
I agree with you. I think they just want another type of winner this year than singer songwriter. But I don’t think they need to put down prior winners, blaming a certain type for the problems.
And when you say that the problem was the limited songlist this year, I think you may be right, and this affected all contestants last year.
Maybe they should take a look as to why a singer song writer won. Maybe people are wising up and trying to tell the industry they want talent, not an artificial singer who really can’t sing to save there like, ( Perry, Bieber, Swift, Kesha etc.
That’s what I think too. That this is the type of singer that more people want to hear.
If that’s what the general public wants to hear, why didn’t Kris Allen’s album even go gold?? Why is Lee forcasted to sell less than 50K his opening week?? An idol winner who doesn’t even get close to gold?? TPTB want the demographic that actually buys records, not just watch and vote and then forget them.
I totally, agree, Melanie!
Maybe not as much promotion as others are getting? Album sales overall are way down this year, also.
And Kris Allen did have a platinum single, and is opening for major acts, which is terrific for a new artist.
And I didn’t mean that everyone is going to like a certain type of singer, but that there are people that do like this type, certainly enough to win or do well in a competition like AI.
My only major problem with these changes is the lack of semifinals. Some of my favorite performances in the past were from the top 24 (or 36). Cook’s “Hello” obviously comes to mind, Brook White’s “You’re So Vain” and Jason Castro’s Hallelujah. I first fell in love with Kris when he did “Man In the Mirror”… The semifinals is where my love for these contestants begins. Also, how are they gonna fill those weeks? They can’t just go straight to the top 12 after Hollywood week.
Totally agreed. We’ll be stuck with their favorite-back-story pimps.
The hour results shows wouldn’t bother me if they brought back ex-contestants to sing. And because there will be no live semi finals, it also cuts down on the number of weeks of the results shows.
I totally agree that if they brought back prior contestants to sing on the results show that fans would tune in just to see their favorite – it would be so much better than showcasing people who can’t sing live and would help idol sales as well – though as soon as you’re off the show, they pretty much like to pretend you don’t exist.
Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson Fantasia and David Cook would be strong choices for mentors. They know what it was like with the competition process. So they can show them how to sing and perform the songs. Adam Lambert was an excellent mentor last season–he was chewing them up many times to perform and sing better.
FOX has another thing coming. Ratings will decline. People won’t chose Idol over CSI or Greys Anatomy. Not to mention the devoted Fringe fans this move has severely hacked off; we’re few, but we’re LOUD. Mark my words, someone in programming will eat this decision.
