Image Credit: Steve Granitz/WireImage.comDrew Carey has signed a deal with GSN for a new improv-based TV show, which the network described as “a lively, unpredictable, and hilarious half-hour of improvised sketch comedy.” I’m assuming that means long-form improv (scenes) rather than short-form (games), like Whose Line Is It Anyway?, but I’m mostly excited that this ups the chance of another improv-based show in the U.S. We need an American version of Mock the Week, and we need it right now.
MtW, which airs on BBC Two, is like a hybrid of Whose Line Is It Anyway? and The Daily Show: It focuses on news and politics, but rather than using a newscast format, it features six comedians and a series of games, most of which have the panel generating one-liners.
Why can’t America do this? I think we can! Don’t you, PopWatchers?

yes, since abc family stopped showing reruns of whose line, i’ve been missing the hilarity of improv. I just hope it will be as funny as whose line, maybe some guest stars from whose line too.
they are (: they’re supposedly bringing back RYAN AND COLIN!
and Brad Sherwood, Greg Proops, Chip Esten, Jeff Davis, and Kathy Kinney. My life was made when I found out about it (:
WHAT? Like this year? 2011???? Jeff Davis? Whats it called?
YES! Finally improv is back to TV! Great news
When did Drew Carey start looking like Orville Redenbacher?
they should just revive Who’s Line
Need a fix of Ryan and Colin!
I read that Ryan would probably be on, but no mention of Colin. What??
I found the original version of Whose Line on BBC America years ago, and I loved both versions. I hope Carey brings back Ryan, Colin, AND Brad Sherwood.
Improv troupes across the country play this game off of audience suggestions each week.
Mock the week is the funniest thing out there. So yes please an American version would be hilarious
No. While I agree America needs another improv show, please don’t destroy the guilty, hilarious pleasure that comes from Mock the Week. Somehow, we manage to kill British imports in the worst way possible.
As an Englishman, I must agree.
For evidence look at Ricky Gervais’ The Office and then watch the watered down in your face Steve Carell version. You can also watch the BBC’s State of Play and then watch the hyped up US movie staring Ben Afleck. Check out Steven Moffat’s fantastic Coupling and then watch the embarassing word for word US reamke. And APPPARENTLY BBCs The Thick Of It (One of the most quintessentially English programmes since Yes Minister) is being remade!!
As long as Frankie or Hugh shows up I’ll watch
Frankie Boyle was the best thing about Mock The Week. He’s left the show now and there’s no way they would let that Swearing Scot loose on American TV.
I loved Whose Line. Why can’t we just bring that back?
Lyons, have you become that much of a hack that you don’t even feel a whit of shame advocating we steal the creative ideas of others?
You’re part of the reason american television is in it’s sad state.
Find another job.
Hooray!!! I have been writing ABC to revive WLIIA. ABCFAM stopped running it. I was going through withdrawal. I found 2 DVDs online of the show. One is the Best Of WLIIA. I laughed so hard, I crried. Hands down the best show EVER! Can’t wait for the new show. Bring back Colin, he and Ryan were the funniest. Thank you GSN.
Do you think Ryan and Colin will be on it?
Great Show and SwedishMatchMakers was funny
Why is it that, as soon as the show I’ve been looking forward to for years is announced, Cox Cable drops GSN from it’s basic package? I’ve been waiting for so long and now…. I just hope that HuluDOTcom will be able to put up episodes either on their site or YouTube :-\
