Order of the Phoenix has always been my least-favourite book in the series. It’s just a brick of teen angst. No thank you.
That in mind, I didn’t even get an advanced ticket for the movie version [the first and last time that'll ever happen in my relationship with the Wonderful World of HP]. I didn’t even fully realize the movie was coming out until a week ahead of time.
I rolled into the theatre ’round noon on opening day by myself to a moderate crowd and much to my surprise, saw what I still hold to be The Best Harry Potter Film to date.
The clouds that roll in during the first five minutes of the movie do not let up. The horror and severity of the situation just get worse. Fudge keeps being a moron! Umbridge keeps getting more sadistic! Bad things just keep happening! And just when the Weasley twins fly to freedom and you feel a twinge of joy, OH NO, Sirius is in trouble and a few explosions later, all the Ministry’s lies are cracked open and oh no, things are only going to get worse. And yet we end on an optimistic note. Our heros may not know entirely what they’re doing or the reach of what they’re fighting against but darn it, they’re fighting the good fight and not even death and the coming war can stop them.
Ahh, what a great movie. It reignited my passion for HP, which had been flagging during high school, especially after the previous two installments, which still feel like a really beautiful exercise in style over substance. Which is why Twilight will never last. All the beauty in the world is useless if doesn’t do anything besides look good.
Oh, Order of the Phoenix. How I love thee.
