'Glee' star Harry Shum Jr. talks his abs: 'I have to do constant crunches to live up to the hype'

This season, Glee‘s Harry Shum Jr. has seen an increase in screen time for his character Mike Chang — and a slight decrease in clothing. Mike’s abs have been a recurring joke on the show — although they’re more enviable than laughable — but Shum Jr. says its one that he’s taking very seriously. “Of course now there is pressure not to let myself go,” he says. “I have to do constant crunches to live up to the hype. In fact, I’m doing them right now. If I don’t, I’m sure that will just as easily become a punchline.”

Shum Jr. says that for the near future, Mike and Tina look to remain a couple, and he even gave us a peek into Glee‘s plans for the holidays. Says Shum Jr., “We do have a holiday episode that is full of your favorite holiday songs. The episode really focuses in on what the holiday spirit means to each of us and Sue causes a ruckus per usual. She is a bit of a Grinch during the holidays.” (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

I’m so glad we’re getting to see more of Mike Chang this season and that he actually gets to speak! I also found him completely adorable in the ‘Duets’ episode :) Shum sounds like a really nice guy with a good sense of humor.

Let’s hear it for the “Situ-Asian”! Glad that he’s getting more air/word time this season… Too bad that Matt aka Shaft never got any love….

Yeah, I didn’t like the way they just kind of disposed of him for seemingly no particular reason. Did they really have to get rid of a cast member just to bring someone else on? It couldn’t have been *that* much of a drain on the budget to keep Shaft around. It seemed way harsh. Did not agree (and BTW–why not just have characters graduate instead of transfer? Isn’t that reason for not being around anymore a lot more common and realistic?)

Whew, just a few Glee articles today…

Harry Shum Jr. is sweet, talented, and gorgeous. So why don’t they bump him up to series regular? I’ll take him over boring Sam any day of the week.

    • Krystal

I like him and Sam but I would love to see him as a regular too. He is a hottie!

    • steph

YESSSSSSSSSS. make him a regular! :D

Well, Hollywood doesn’t like a handsome Asian guy as a regular or a lead unless his role is a martial arts/kung fu fighter.

Yes, I’m glad they are giving more air time to the most neglected New Directions member. I always found it distracting and weird that there were these two guys who were always around but almost never did anything–like they were just these token minority window dressingss. Sad that they didn’t keep Other Black Guy too, but I guess Mike had the one-up with the abs and the sick dance skills. I’ve been enjoying Mike this season way more than the stars of the show whose characters have grown somewhat tiresome (Ahem..Rachel.. Ahem)

Surely there are proofreaders paid good money to catch such errors. If not, please hire me! :)

      “admirere” = irony

can Harry Shum Jr be a series regular yet?

EW doesn’t have better things to do news items on? Or is this just to fill the Glee quota for the day? This show gets an amazing amount of coverage for a show that doesn’t win its time slot. I’d understand if it was a critical darling, but it’s not. It doesn’t even pull as many viewers as Criminal Minds…

We get it. EW likes Glee, but it’s just plain sycophancy at this point.

    • Gravity

Um, Glee has won it’s timeslot every week this season, IS a critical darling, and what it pulls in comparison to Criminal Minds doesn’t matter because they don’t even air on the same night!

So much wrong in so little post.

      • Leithen

        Critical darling with who?

And it airs opposite NCIS,which is the #1 shown on television in terms of viewers, so there’s no way it’s won its timeslot.

      • Leithen

I just checked, and last week, Glee had half as many viewers as NCIS.

So I guess the question is what’s more important, total viewers or the 18-49 demographic? If you’re looking to total viewers, it does matter how it compares to shows like Criminal Minds and NCIS, which pull more.

My point, really is that Glee is oversaturated on EW.

      • Gravity

Winning a timeslot has nothing to do with having the most viewers, Glee’s Nielson ratings are significantly higher than NCIS’s.

And it’s a critical darling on this very site. Go read last night’s recap if you need convinced.

    • Gen

Glee is the most expensive scripted TV show right now even with less viewership. You know why? Advertisers don’t care about total viewers as much as ratings between 18-49. No one cares if old people watch the show because they are not main consumers.

      • Leithen

So apparently EW’s cares are the advertisers’ cares?

Or are we assuming no “old” people as you put it read the website?

      • Gen

Yes, because the website also has advertisement, and young people are more important than old people when it comes to ads. They don’t really care if old people read it or not because they don’t consume as much as the younger generation. They also wouldn’t generate buzz like the young reader.

  • Maureen

    He’s hot!! ;)

  • Kay

He’s one of the main reasons why I watch Glee. I hope Ryan Murphy makes him a regular already because Harry is so talented.
