Gerard Butler and his biceps in talks for 'Afterburn'

gerard-butlerImage Credit: Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.comGerard Butler is in talks to star in the bigscreen adaptation of the comic book series Afterburn. Frequently described as “Indiana Jones meets Mad Max,” the Red 5 title is set in the near future, after a massive solar flare strikes Earth, destroying the Eastern Hemisphere. Europe, Africa, Asia, India and Russia have become wastelands, and what life remains (like sharks!) is mutated. Butler would play Jake, who leads a team of “recovery experts” who venture into the danger zone to secure treasures like the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone, and the Crown Jewels for wealthy Western clients. They have their competition, of course — rival treasure hunters, pirates, and hostile mutants. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) is in talks to direct. According to Red 5, a draft of the script was written by Matt Johnson (Into the Blue), and Christian Gudegast (A Man Apart), is set to take another pass. Tobey Maguire and Neal Moritz have been attached to the project as producers since 2008, the year the comic, written by Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood, debuted.

What do you think? This sounds right in Butler’s wheelhouse after Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, 300, and Gamer. I’m all for a role that requires him to wear bicep-baring T-shirts (though I could do without Jake’s do-rag). And even though I’d like to see Butler in a good chick flick, his radar is slightly off when it comes to that genre (P.S. I Love You, The Ugly Truth, The Bounty Hunter).

I think Gerard is too old for this role.

Why is he too old at 41? Most of the time I see young stars in roles I think they should not portray, because they do not give off an aura of experience and knowledge. Mercenaries are generally not 19 or 20. They are men, not boys, with lots of experience. Too many people accept boys in roles meant for real men. oldbutnotdead.

I think that you are too young to appreciate an incredible man.

Other than the fact that Gerard Butler could stand and do nothing but read the phone book and I’d be happy, I think it would be great. He is so awesome in that type of role…

I’m excited about Butler in this role; not excited about Fuqua directing. Training Day was great, but King Arthur was terrible. I think he’s limited in what he can do in the fantasy/sci-fi genres.

Enough with the reading a phone book anology. Can we have a world wide edict to forbid anyone from using that cliche ever again?

Your comment cracks me up because I’ve said the exact same thing before.

I mean, not only is it an overused cliche, but I don’t even think that many people use phonebooks anymore (most people I know use Google or to find phone numbers), so it’s also out-dated.

I say we come up with a new mundane task to replace “reading the phonebook.” I’ve been unofficially using “folding laundry.”

I can watch him read yellow pages entries from hahaha

      • Mr. Holloway

There you go, Krystal…way to bring it into 2010!

      • Monty

How about “I could watch him read a list of hyperlinks from a google search”?

Let’s hope Jennifer Aniston does not get cast opposite of him.

  • Joan

Just the type of role that Gerry can take and run with. With good direction this could be awesome.

    Joan. HUG xxx

Fingers and toes crossed that this is not another Gamer, meaning good concept but poor result.

I think he can do rom-coms, but the ones written today are so bad. P.S. I Love You would have been better if someone other than Hilary Swank was the lead. She’s a fantastic actress in certain roles, but not rom-coms. I’d love to blame Jennifer Aniston and Kathryn Heigl for those 2 movies, but the script for both was awful!

    • jmcg

I liked him with Heigl in the Ugly Truth. They had good chemistry.

You can use any cliche you want — new or old — take your pick. Doesn’t matter. What matters is watching Gerard Butler do anything…perfection personified. Call that a cliche, too, if you like. It simply doesn’t get any better. Bottom line.

I agree about cliches, but I want to make it clear that I’d watch Gerry read a phone book,a comic book,a shopping list or just stare at a screen. I want to see him! He’s a great actor plus the sexiest and most gorgeous man God ever created! Please, just put him on the big screen! P.S. I liked The Ugly Truth and Bounty Hunter and apparently a lot of others did too as both films made LOTS of money.

Cannot tell you how many times I have watched the Ugly Truth, despite the script (written by women, unfortunately). Love PS I love you, but cannot watch it, it is too sad. Bounty Hunter has amusing moments. There is a good rom-com out there, he just has not run into it. He is very amusing on interviews. Vulgar, funny, charismatic…no one else like him in Hollywood anymore. oldbutnotdead.

      • Jennifer

I agree! He is unique, and to see him in interviews makes me think he would be a blast to hang out with! Being incredibly sexy doesn’t hurt either.

  • Chrissy

I liked P.S. I Love You. I didn’t like Ugly Truth because it was embarrassing to watch with my parents and Katherine Heigl is annoying. Bounty Hunter was predictable and I realized that Jennifer Anniston always has the same role.

  • elle

I really didn’t like The Ugly Truth…Katherine Heigl is terrible in it. And the lighting through the entire film was dreadful. I felt like I was trying to look through the glass of a lightbulb at a movie being shown inside the light bulb. Terrible. That being said, the one saving grace was watching Gerry, who is a tall, “thick” and gorgeous man, so wonderfully dance in the night club scene! Ooooo…

  • Jennifer

It is sad to think that 41 is too old for an action role… now if you were to watch the Expendables, I would tell you that there were a few stars in their that should have stayed at home. But Gerard Butler! The man is incredible, he can easily pull off a role like this. As far as the chick flicks, I am not a fan of Jennifer Aniston, I think she gets more credit than she deserves and Bounty Hunter was not my favorite, but still ok. The Ugly Truth was hilarious! I have yet to see PS I Love You, but I am sure that he is incredible in that one as well. The only movie that I haven’t liked is Gamer, not that I didn’t like him in the movie… but the movie itself was terrible, there were a lot of parts in there that really didn’t need to be in that movie. Go for it Gerry! I can watch you in just about any type of movie and think you are incredible.

Is he doing all of this naked?
