'Cars 2' trailer: Will Doc Hudson make a cameo?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , , ,

So last month’s Cars 2 teaser wasn’t a prank after all: Lightning McQueen and his rusty pal, Mater, actually steer into the world of espionage in the sequel to Pixar’s 2006 smash. The new trailer for Cars 2 has some clues, with McQueen trading the good ol’ boy NASCAR circuit for international Grand Prix racing. Somehow, this leads to intrigue when Mater and McQueen are confused for master spies, North by Northwest style. Yes, that’s Michael Caine as British operative, Finn MacMissile.

Caine’s Finn has a little more polish than Doc Hudson, but it looks as if he’ll be the voice of wisdom that Paul Newman’s Doc was in the original film. The trailer doesn’t hint at what becomes of Doc, and I’m curious how the film will address his absence, if at all. (Did Paul Newman’s passing have anything to do with the decision to move the sequel far, far away from Radiator Springs?) How would you feel if a different actor voices Doc in a brief cameo that ties up loose ends for the character? Recall that Pixar did just that for the late Jim Varney, who had played Slinky Dog, in Toy Story 3.

Doesn’t really matter to me – kinda looking forward to the Toy Story short that is reported to be included with this release next summer.
I do hope that there are some international racing cameos, though.

I’m so excited to see this! It is sad that the orginal Doc will not be there, but they did a fantastic job with Slinky Dog on TS3, so maybe they can do the same w/Cars2

Robert Redford should voice Doc as a nod to Butch and Sundance

I love this idea. It honors everyone!

  • JLC

So, they’re remaking Speed Racer, huh?

  • Tim

am I the only one scared that this will be the movie that ruins Pixar’s streak of critically acclaimed hits?

    • heej

you didn’t see the first Cars?

    • Cordy

The first cars already did that

      • Dennis

The first Cars was okay, but here’s what bothers me about the concept: where are the people? There’s lots of roads and buildings and yes, cars that appear to be built for human beings, but yet there aren’t any people. (No animals either?) Cars didn’t ruin Pixar’s streak, but it’s definitely the weakest of the Pixar concepts, in my opinion.

Yeah, I drive my wife insane commenting on various things that don’t make sense. Like, why is it called a “Drive-In” movie? How else would they get in?

But I don’t think you’re supposed to think there should be people around. I remember reading that they designed all the vehicles to have closed interiors or no seats visible.

As for animals, there’s one shot of the “Pixar crows” during the Life is a Highway sequence. They’re the only ones in the movie.

I liked the first cars, I just feel like this one is nuking the fridge a bit. I mean, if you pitched me a buddy comedy about secret agents that also happened to be cars, I’d have laughed you out of the room. The only reason I have any faith is because it’s from the hopping lamp.

Are you kidding me? Cars was by far one of the best Pixar films. In the top 3, as I see it. Much like Toy Story, it hits at a quintessential truth of youth–that cars can a life of their own, personification, anthropomorphism. It told a touching story–sure, not original in its raw content, but original in its context. And it was hilarious, yet filled with subtle hints of humor that you only catch on subsequent viewings. Not to mention dozens of entendres that must have been lost on a few of the people here. My top 3: Cars, Finding Nemo and the original Toy Story. Toy Story 3 is the only movie that might squeeze it out for me. And as for some of the literal comments here, come on folks, it’s a cartooooon. Since when do we dissect cartoons in the same fashion as live action? I can’t wait to see Cars 2.

And we all know how important critical acclaim is, right? Outside of Toy Story, Cars has been the most successful franchise for Pixar.

      • Christian

That said, Cars is still considered “Fresh” by Rotten Tomatoes. Just because it hasn’t received the acclaim of other Pixar films doesn’t mean it’s not acclaimed to begin with.

      • matt

Toy Story is Pixar’s only franchise thus far. You can’t say Cars is a successful franchise when in fact the second film (which would then make it a franchise) has not actually been released and cannot claim critical or commercial success. Time will tell of course. But Cars is my least favorite of the Pixar films, but they are all excellent.

      • Christian

I was considering all aspects of the franchise, not just the movies. Cars Toons(the tv show just released on DVD) and especially the merchandise are huge sellers.

      • Ian

It is a franchise as far as the other aspects of it are concerned. Mainly the massive success of the merchandising, and the success of all the Cars shorts (which certainly lend themselves to FRANCHISE status). Cars was extremely popular in the toy department, as my 5 year0old can attest to with all of his Cars toys, blankets, underwear, shoes, toothbrush, etc. It was aimed at younger kids, and being based around CARS was a natural hit in the toy area. All of those things made it a franchise for Pixar long before work started on a sequel. All of that is the reason there’s a sequel, rather than a sequel to The Incredibles, which was also an excellent movie for the target demo, but far less lucrative or popular in the licensing area.

Radiator Springs will be nothing but an after thought in this movie. So why use a character who’s voice actor is dead?

  • Christian

The ghosts of George Carlin (Fillmore) and Joe Ranft (Red) also will not be making an appearance in this film.

  • Todd

Yeah, I don’t think you have to retire a character because the original voice actor died. It is ok to have someone else do it. It isn’t like Doc was Newman’s most iconic role.

I am a fan of Paul Newman’s, but it is not disrespectful to have the character in the movie voiced by someone else.

  • redvector

What no Incredibles 2? With Disney now owning Marvel that sounds like a no-brainer to me.

  • Jeff from Jersey; yes New Jersey

What? My favorite tow truck as a master spy? All this and Harry Palmer, too. Can*t wait.

  • Andy

Robert Duvall voiced Doc Hudson in my DVD of Cars – was this for the UK only? If so, he can do it again – he was brilliant! Loved the first one – hoping the sequel maintains the standard.

  • Daniel Van Ness

Robert Redford should voice Doc Hudson in ‘Cars 2′, Tommy Chong should voice Fillmore in ‘Cars 2′ and Frank Welker should voice Red in ‘Cars 2′.

  • amber medellin

Who will replace georgy carlin or paul newman on cars dos? does anybody know that? what about cameos by voice? will tommy hanks b there or bonnie hunt doing her additional cameos? i know jonny ratzenberger had 3 additional cameos from cars 2006*

  • Kent Bodin

Does moving the action to Europe and Japan delete the need for romance? Where is Sally Carrera, the fastest lady on the road?

  • Daniel Van Ness

I heard that Lloyd Sherr will voice Fillmore in ‘Cars 2′.
