I think EW bases it’s recaps on ratings and number of comments. This is the first time in years they aren’t recapping Biggest Loser (personally, I think they waited 4 seasons to long to stop). Rating are way down and there were next to no comments on the first 2 recaps.
What a neat article. I had no iknnilg.
You are reaching with that one! But its an incredible show that is must see tv!!!!
I was about to add to the True Blood comparison with a loving wink to the inclusion of taboo/verboten beverages.
And then I slapped myself for even taking a moment to enjoy what is surely meant as an insult against this phenomenal show. So what if it overlaps with some of the other beloved shows from the network? First of all, those are pretty weak threads you’re tying together. A secondly, this is a rare tv show that has cleverness and depth, in a world of celebutantes and posers, this show actually has something to offer people with half a brain. Boardwalk Empire deserves a little more respect from EW staff. I mean, I know not EVERYTHING can match the genius of Glee or Real Housewives (*gag*), but maybe you might want to consider that shows can have merit even with out characters named “Situation”. Pull your heads out of the middle school girls’ bathroom and start appreciating real story-telling!
IT STINKS, BOARDWALK EMPIRE STINKS, STEVE BUSCEMI IS SOOOOOOO MISCAST, its NOT even FUNNY,,,,, HBO should be federally prosecuted for their non stop repetition of the same movies and shows, in TREATMENT also stinks, will ask the feds to open an investigation on HBO on a number of issues….
Regardless of your perception of stinkitude, I don’t think that Buscemi is miscast at all! Most of the gangsters of that era were not the swingin’ Hollywood studs like we see in the movies. (They can’t all be Warren Beatty.) They were mostly rat-faced gross little men who got it ON with the ladies because of their money and power. The real Nucky Johnson was no looker. And I think most of us can agree Buscemi has the acting chops, so what’s not to love about the job he’s doing? Maybe the only curiously laughable part is how mismatched he and his onscreen brother are (paging Ahnold and DeVito!).
I love Mad Men so don’t give me the intellectual excuse of why I think Boardwalk Empire stinks. Bad story, bad characters and not entertaining at all.
You got it, no intellectual excuse (although…I might point out that, as much as I love Mad Men, it’s a bit more pedestrian than Boardwalk with its limited gaggle of characters…). I will say that you have to really enjoy the politics of organized crime and history. I wouldn’t say bad story or characters, but maybe just niche. For many of us, the story is riveting, twisted, and ghoulishly fun!
“Loving” “Mad Men” doesn’t make you an intellectual.
I find Mad Men to be extremely overrated and love Boardwalk Empire.
Rome is still tops in my book. Then maybe True Blood, then Carnivale, then Deadwood, then Boardwalk Empire. It has a long way to go.
I just loved the Sophie Tucker portrayal. This woman was wonderful and really did “One Of These Days” justice, even better than the real Sophie Tucker. After reading about Sophie Tucker, her story would be a fascinating series and not what we are used to.
For me it’s Boardwalk Empire, then Deadwood, then True Blood, then the Sopranos, then Carnivale, then Rome.
It’s a really good show. And this from someone who had absolutely no interest in it initially. And it’s not reminiscent of the Sopranos, unless you actually haven’t watched or don’t know what either show is. If you’re too lazy to cover it, EW, just don’t try.
This diagram is actually hilarious.
people need to CHILL out! seriously, the post was meant as a funny way to analyze the show, and I dont feel it was trying to undermine the show at all. as others pointed out, it shows a lot of interest in the show. And i always love me some serious look into the dna of a channel programming, and a thought on my favourite shows’ main themes.
well done Darren!
I agree w/Michael. This diagram is original, insightful and hilarious. We watch and enjoy this show. I personally miss Deadwood – it has been my favorite of all the HBO “period” dramas. Steve Buscemi is great as Nucky. Nice to see him on a regular gig.
This artcile achieved exactly what I wanted it to achieve.
