Billy Ray Cyrus blesses troops, won't talk about divorce

Filed under: Music and tagged: , , ,

Billy Ray Cyrus had three things to say: “God bless America, God bless the troops,” and don’t ask him about his divorce. Cyrus was taping an interview on Tuesday (set to air today) for Woody and the Wake-Up Call on WCOL — Columbus, Ohio’s continuous country station! — when the host asked about his pending divorce. “I’m sorry, I had to ask you,” Woody Johnson stammered. And then Cyrus got huffy:

Is it possible this is performance art? This is essentially parody of itself: What’s the most trite thing a country singer can possibly say? And what’s the goofiest name for a morning radio show? Can we combine all of this somehow? Oh, we can? Thanks, pop culture universe!

So … Team Billy Ray on this, right, PopWatchers?

I really don’t get it, at all. Did he seriously think no one was going to ask him about it? He could have just said “no comment”. Hannah/Miley has been asked way worse, but I’ve never seen her freak out like that. Maybe he could learn a thing or two from his daughter.

I’ts sad that they could not make it work but maybe its for the best …miley i love you and i wish this didnt happen.I hope in time everything that bad in your life will ture good.MILEY I WANT YOU BE HAPPY ON YOUR BIRTHDAY BECAUSE THAT DAY IS ALL ABOUT YOU ONLY…I KNOW ITS ALOT GOIN ON IN YOUR LIFE AND MOST OF IT IS BAD BUT YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT ALL THE GOOD THING AND LET THE BAD THING GO AWAY.

I wondering if Woody asked about that awesome mullet Billy Ray is sporting these days.

    • Cin

      Awesome LG!

Billy Ray’s been dealing with abusive media for two decades–always with admirable grace–and the blows up one time and people jump all over him. Give the guy a break. He’s just been through a divorce. Plus, it’s a sure thing that his publicist told the DJ and his producer before hand that questions about the divorce were off limits. Woody Johnson was definately stepping over the line with his question.

    • MusicFan

Not Sure. Woody may or may not have been told the question was off limits. Don’t think Billy Ray handled himself well. He should have said “no comment” and finished the interview like a professional. I’m not on Team Billy Ray at all.

  • Sue1

Never ever been a fan of Cyrus, and he could have handled this with a little more grace, but Johnson HAD to ask him? Really?

  • Riley

Really, this is considered a blow up? It’s almost the end of the interview and he ends it with a blessing and by saying he’s rude? I think a lot of celebrities could take note on how well he handled a question that as Chris pointed out was probably told was off limits anyways. I mean what was Billy supposed to say to the question? Go all David Arquette? Yeah that would’ve been great for his five children to hear! To be quite frank you wouldn’t ask a co-worker why their marriage is going bust. Why do we think it’s ok because these people play somebody we like on tv?

I’m sure his heart is breaking in a million pieces. Not just for him but his children as well. Leave him alone & let him heal as best anyone can under these conditions. It’s a family afair not the public’s really.

I believe Billy Ray did the right thing by walking out. Woody the DJ is a real jerk and new exactly what he was doing “only for the ratings” was on his mind. Billy Ray is a celebrity but he is also a human being and is going through a difficult time in his personal life and he was not there to talk about that. He was there to talk about the re-make of Some Gave All and the support for our troops and Woody went for the gossip. I say Woody owes BRC an apology. God Bless Mr. Cyrus for caring about our troops.

  • ‘k

I wouldn’t classify that as a blow up or freak out. Sounded fairly tame to me. But he probably should have expected it. On the other hand, the interviewer didn’t “have” to ask. I certainly don’t feel that I “have” to know.

I don’t blame Billy Ray.he is a tireless promoter of the troops and was there to talk about them not his personal life. For God’s sake this divorce just happened. The man is hurting over it.Billy Ray is always gracious and kind to everyone even the ones that kiss his butt to his face and joke about him behind his back once he leaves. He gives his time and money to many charities and he started his own charity for disadvantaged kids as soon as he hit the big time.Woody needs to apologise to Billy Ray.He was very rude to do that to him.I don’t blame Billy one bit.I think Woody is very lucky he still has all his teeth.

  • Shirlru

To me this was the quietest blowup ever. Woody saw that Billy Ray had no intention talking about his very painful divorce. But he asked over and over. That was definately RUDE. Woody owes Billy Ray an apology.

Billy Ray all the way!! He’s a kind, sensitive soul and Woody is just trying to stir things up. We love you Billy Ray…

Billy Ray did not want to talk about the divorce, that is why he avoided the question, twice. So why did Woody come right out and ask? HE WANTED TO STIR THINGS UP AND GET PUBLICITY FOR HIMSELF! Billy Ray was right Woody is rude and owes an apology to him! Go Billy Ray ALL THE WAY!

  • Sally

Woody was not rude. Cyrus was an jerk. Here’s what Woody had to say:
“(The question) obviously hurt (Cyrus),” Johnson said on Friday night. “I really blame his people more. If he didn’t want to talk about it, that should have been made clear to us and every other radio station that was down there and it was not. It specifically was not listed as something that was out of bounds.”

  • Charma

Billy Ray is always a gentleman and he tried to just ignore the question and talk about what he was there to talk about. Woody asked the question two times, and Billy Ray did not answer but tried to finish the interview. Then Woody just had to ask it again. One thing that will upset Billy Ray Cyrus is rudeness and this DJ was very rude to pursue this question after he knew or should have known Billy Ray did not wish to talk about it. I think Billy Ray did the right thing by leaving at that point.

  • Cin

Billy had every right to get up and walk out of that interview. I’m glad he didn’t give Woody any more of his time. He wasn’t there to talk about divorce and Woody had no right to go there. I sure hope to see Billy Ray out on the road. Lets hope for some tour dates!!! :)

  • Bristol

Come on Woody. You know you were wrong and don’t have the guts to say it. Billy Ray was a pure gentleman and walked away.He tried to go on with the interview but you just would not give up. You just kept punching away and not caring about Billy Ray’s feelings. He is human just like me and you. Well I don’t know if you are human or not when you can treat someone like you treated BR and say you have no regrets what you did. You showed your true colors of what kind of person you are. Billy Ray is a class act all the way. He can hold his head high because he knows did the right thing. I can’t say that for you Woody. I feel you owe BR an apology and to all your listeners. Team Billy Ray keep on keepin on.
