The new 'Tron' trailer is up: cool or creepy?

A new trailer for TRON: Legacy has surfaced and I have to say it looks pretty damn cool. For the most part, anyway. I was a little skeptical about the idea of rebooting a franchise that tanked so epically the first time around, but after seeing all the gee-whiz glow-in-the-dark f/x and hints at a plausible father-son story, I think I might be won over. The big-budget Disney flick doesn’t open until Dec. 17, but the new trailer should be enough to satisfy the nerd-herd for the next month or so — thanks especially to the film’s Star Wars-y action scenes and ominous lines like: “The Grid: a place of infinite possibility.” Give the clip a ride after the jump.

Actually, the only part of the whole enterprise that gives me pause is the digitally rejuvenated Jeff Bridges. I’m all for the scenes of ‘The Dude’ in a Karl Marxian grey beard, but I’m not so sure about scenes that try to make him look the way he did in the 1982 original. There’s something slightly off about them in a creepy sort of way — Bridges looks like he just stepped out of The Polar Express. But that’s a quibble. For the most part, this seems like something worth getting geeked up about.

    The music reminds of Inception.

    • Will

That’s because it is from Inception.

The “new” 1982 Jeff Bridges DOES look creepy…but I find that works out ok here, since it looks like he’s the protagonist.

In “The Polar Express” everyone looked like that…not as fun…mostly uncomfortable.

    • Solamente Dave

To me, he looks exactly like he did in Starman.

      • Mr. Holloway

To me, he looks like a wax figure of what he looked like in “Starman.” (But, again, I’m ok with that…I feel like I’m supposed to be creeped out by him.)

    • Shaun

In the TRON world, yeah, I agree – creepy works. But in the flashbacks he’s just supposed to be normal young Jeff Bridges. Least that’s what I assume. But, yeah, he’s creepy looking there to.

      • Mr. Holloway

(Yikes…by “protagonist” I actually meant “antagonist” in my original comment.)

I hear what you’re saying. I’m guessing/hoping that in the flashback, we don’t see much more than the shot of him leaving the room with young Sam, and most of the time we just hear his voice or see him from behind.

    • Jacob

Yeah, I think creepy is the point, seeing as how he’s the villain (I think).
Also, this is the same tech that aged and de-aged Brad Pitt in Benjamin Button, and I never found that to be all that creepy. Maybe it won’t be that bad? We’ll see. The trailers sure make him creepy.

    • Me Fail English?

      • Mr. Holloway

I actually corrected myself in a comment above a while ago AND I passed English. (Barely, but I passed.)

    But what happened to Tron?!?

And how did Clu survive? I’m gonna have to rewatch the original but I could have sworn that he derezed.

    • Alex

The original Clu was derezed. This is Clu 2. From Wikipedia: A more advanced incarnation of his original hacking program, Flynn designed CLU 2 in 1988 to act as an “exact duplicate of himself” within the TRON world.

  • Chris

Stop saying the original movie tanked! It’s grossed doubled its budget. It was top 20 domestic gross in 1982.

    • Nic.

Thank you, Chris! Also, EW, if it tanked so badly, why are we still talking about it and psyched for the continuation?

  • nodnarb

Oh man, I think my eyes just orgasmed.

  • tracy bluth

    SO FRICKIN EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!

  • james anderson

This is what 3D was made for.I’ll be there.

  • Dylan

I think the point is that CLU2 is supposed to be a little creepy, that something’s a little “off” about him. But we’ll see next month.

  • redvector

If there’s such a thing as an eyegasm I think I just had one.

  • DavidJ

I’m wondering what kind of reference they used for the young Jeff Bridges. Because that doesn’t really look like the old pictures of him at all.

    • Ian

Well, we all know Bruce Willis, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan and Brad Pitt didn’t look like mannequins when they were younger, but the movies which used this effect on them would have you believe otherwise! The tech is still not there, but it’ll keep getting refined.

  • BrandonK

I agree with some of the others – CLU2 looks a bit off, but it’s okay. The flashbacks to the real world Jeff Bridges, whenever that’s supposed to be, look off in a bad way. The movie looks super good, though!

  • Kim

Tron is the one movie my husband and I cant wait to see. It would be awesome if they did a double feature. Would love to see the Tron on the big screen and then see Tron Legacy.

  • Evan Meadow

That trailer needs the Daft Punk music

  • Psac

Forget Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde looks awesome.

  • Daddyb

Knowing Disney, the more that it’s hyped, the worse it will be. Don’t get me wrong, I’d LOVE it if Tron:Legacy turned out to be a “The Matrix” for the decade, but they’ve been hyping this thing for more than 2 years now. I fear that NOTHING can live up to the expectations that Disney has been spinning.
