'Glee' song preview: Darren Criss is a 'Teenage Dream'

Glee-never-been-kissedImage Credit: Adam Rose/FoxIt’s that time of the week when we hear snippets of the songs from the next episode of Glee and pretend we can tell which one will be the best. Listen below to the tracks from the “Never Been Kissed” episode. Per Fox, “After Finn and Sam find an unconventional way of controlling their urges, a few glee club members pick up on the strategy and start using it too. But when Coach Beiste gets wind of what they are up to, the glee club has some explaining to do.” This involves two mashups: The boys (pictured, looking Motown-ready) do the Supremes’ “Stop! In the Name of the Love” with En Vogue’s “Free Your Mind,” while the girls get Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” and the Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up.” My thoughts: “Free Your Mind” will always be a ringer, and even though I love Bon Jovi, I’m now more excited to hear Mercedes take the lead on the Stones. New cast member Darren Criss (as Blaine, a gay student on the rival Dalton Academy Warblers) makes his first appearance to sing lead on a catchy rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” while Puck and Artie’s “friendship” results in a duet of Bob Marley’s “One Love (People Get Ready).”

once again the singing is horrible. these fools couldn’t sing to save their lives. all auto-tune and no substance. glee is ruining modern music standards, and age-old classics. i am boycotting this show and i have forced my teenage daughters to help me. this trash will get cancelled soon! it is disgusting and only focuses on the tranny people and homosexuals. death to glee and acceptance!

    • Mel

Wow, that was a very mature and enlightened comment from a mother of two teenage daughters. I’m sure they must be so proud of you.

    • GleeFan5

Sorry, but that was the most insensitive thing I have ever heard. It will not get cancelled because it has a great following full of tolerant people, unlike Rosie. What do you have against homosexuals? They are focusing on the issue of bullying that is in the media- are you saying it is ok when gay kids killed themselves because they got bullied? Don’t hold your breath, it won’t get cancelled. Oh, and no talent? Search Darren Criss on youtube. He is the one singing Teenage dream and is quite talented, like the rest of them.

    • Scott

I feel so horribly bad for your daughters.

      • The Jackal

        Why?

    • Jamie

Well Rosie, with parenting like that I am truly afraid of the next generation. Having said that, I do agree that the auto-tune is a bit exsessive.

    • Joel V.

(And everyone stood up, in an effort to distance themselves, and walked away from the crazy lady leaving her alone, still huffing and puffing from the effort of her rant)

      • Mel

That’s funny. Although, I imagined her in a more… modest setting, say, a trailer. As she has decided to put off rushing to cash in her welfare check so that she brush up on her computer skills since she dropped out of high school before completing that course. Her lovely daughters don’t stand a chance, I’m afraid.

      • Meredith

        Mel,
It’s (really) funny, because it’s true. Thanks :-)

    • The Daughter

thanks for posting this publicly mom. now the world knows your a bigot.

      • debadwolff

        lol ;)

    • The Jackal

Newsflash. Not everyone has the same values. So because she thinks differently for some of you, she’s crazy? Preach tolerance but don’t practice it, right?

      • Mel

Tolerance and ignorance are not the same.

      • The Jackal

What’s ignorant about it? She doesn’t like trannies or homosexuals.

      • Scott

Exactly what Mel said. God forbid her daughters watch a show that has “the tranny people” and homosexuals in it.

      • Rolo Tomasi

@Mel, but what you said up above isn’t ignorant? Typical hypocrite on EW comment sections.

      • The Jackal

wow, my comment disappeared. I didn’t even say anything hateful. Funny on what EW picks and choses what to delete.

      • Mel

@Rolo It was ignorant and immature. And I regretted it after posting. However, I believe @Rosie’s comments are still worse especially in light of all the recent suicides. I responded out of frustration and I apologize for my above comment.

      • GleeFan5

But the things that she said are quite insenstitive. I agree with Mel, she is very ignorant. If her daughters love the show, they will find a way to watch it.

      • The Jackal

What was insensitive? The words tranny and homosexual?

      • Rolo Tomasi

@GleeFan5, you agree with Mel but what he said wasn’t ignorant about people living in trailers being on welfare and dropping out of high school…lol….just another hypocrite. It’s hilarious.

      • Nicole

I don’t tolerate intolerance. Respect for other people’s views is one thing, but I don’t respect hate.

      • Mel

@Rolo by the way I’m a “she”. And I already apologized. May be that’s not enough to be redeemed in your book. But I do genuinely regret my low blow. Although I’m not so impressed with you immature and cynical need to call everyone a hypocrite.

      • Rolo Tomasi

What was hateful? She didn’t say they should all die, just the show should.

      • Nicole

When someone says death to acceptance of “tranny people” and homosexuals, I interpret that as hate speech, but I’m crazy like that.

      • missy

Sounds a little hateful to me. “I have forced my teenage daughters to (boycott) with me.” Imposing your morality upon others by force – something to be proud of. “Only focuses on the tranny people” – obviously not a real viewer because real viewers know there isn’t a single transsexual charater on the show. Heck – there wasn’t even a transsexual in the Rocky Horror Picture episode. I’m not going to say that Rosie is dumb or wrong, but at best she is clearly misinformed.

      • RLA

what nicole said, all the way.

      • Livia

I find it interesting that you’re choosing to harp on others who believe in acceptance and stick up for the person who wants tolerance “dead.” Personally I feel everyone has a right to their own opinions, but sometimes, opinions are better left unsaid, as they can be hurtful.

    • viddingwithkyle

I hope your daughters abandon you.

    • Romy

If you don’t like it, then don’t watch it!

    • austinrob

Ugh, your poor daughters! They are being taught hate by the very person who should be teaching them love.
Reading your post makes me sad for those poor girls.
But then again we (begrudgingly) need people like you so everyone can know what the WRONG answer is. So thanks for providing that at least.

    • SC

One would hope this comment is a parody based on the last line, which is amazingly over the top.

All the same, one should point out that there are, at present, no transsexuals on Glee.

    • Tarc

      Troll.

    • Shama

I pity you and your children Rosie. You live your life full of hate and ignorance. Truly sad.

    • J

I always find it baffling when people click on links that state exactly what the articles subject is so they can announce their intentions to openly hate whatever the article is discussing. Trolling confuses me :|

    • Iam Right

@Rosie Hahaha, good luck with that. How many enormously popular primetime musical dramedies have been shut down by just three people?

      Nice try, troll.

    • v

I feel sorry your children are being raised be someone so intolerant. Good luck with those relationships when they are grown!

    • Colby

Bitter much??? This sounds like the rant of a lonely woman who is desperate to find a man who won’t leave her.

    • Nan

Sorry, Rosie, but you’re wrong. It won’t get cancelled. Fox has already picked it up for a third season, plus it gets top ranked in ratings week after week.

Sorry you are so narrow minded, and I feel bad that you dragged your teenage daughters into it too.

    • Deb

While I’m really glad to see so many people take a stand against bigotted idiots……..can you people not recognise an obvious troll when you read it? “Iam boycotting this show and am forcing my teenage daughters to help me” ? Who the hell talks like that outside of Obvious Troll Land?

    • jenna

I’m pretty sure your daughters sneak out and watch it anyway.

    • Tyler

Wow, I’m astounded that someone could be so close-minded in this day and age. I’m disgusted by your bigotry. Please take your cruel words somewhere else.

    • Dylan

“death to… acceptance”? Really? Did you really just say that? No one is requiring you to be accepting of non-straight orientations, but to be this violently against them seems unnecessary and way behind the times, Ms. Rosie.

    • allan

Lighten up sister…if the entire world was apple pie and straight it would be a dull world to live in. The reality is that there are more hidden occupied “closet” cases in this country than Uncle Milties cross-dressing outfits. Live and let live and keep singing those inspiring gospel numbers.

    • gleebuk

rosie–all the actors in glee are very talented and went trough a very intese audition process..some of the songs sung in this episode by the males were backed by an accapella group who reached the finals of “the sing off” and many of the glee cast are broadway stars or future stars. the show it self is about raising awareness for the young minority and is helping young people all over the world stand up for themselves and what they belive in….and others glee actually uses very little autotune its just that people are so used to hearing autotune that you automatcally assume that anyone good uses it an good example of this are the UK show X Factor where auto tune is used loads and many mine but then real artists (such like michael buble) go on and do it live people judge and say they cant be that good it must be autotuned and mimed

  • RK

    Whew! Glee news!

    • Gleek

Seriously! I was getting worried that it would be a GLEE-free day. C’mon, EW! Where’s that long-awaited article on the gaffer?

  • The Jackal

I have to give EW credit, after the debacle from a couple of weeks ago after the aired the RHPS episode they have cut back the number of articles. Let’s see if they can contain themselves

    • Tank Girl

A lot of their “containment” is no doubt due to the fact that this week’s ep was a rerun. Let’s wait till next week to see how many articles there are before we start giving them credit.

      • The Jackal

There was a lot of backlash last week. Maybe they got the hint. Around the third article the comment sections were just filled with people saying enough already.

      • RLA

but you do realize, the more you comment on a glee article, the more the website considers it a subject of interest from their readers. if you dislike the show and want less coverage, DON’T CLICK ON IT (clicks to websites are like ratings to tv shows). and don’t comment because that’s also how they judge popularity… unless you just like to aggravate people for attention-sake.

  • The Jackal

New cast member Darren Criss (as Blaine, a gay student on the rival Dalton Academy Warblers)

So when other new characters come on, do you describe them as heterosexual? Why the need to point out someone is gay?

    • viddingwithkyle

Because he is suppose to be Kurt’s love interest so it will be a big part of his storyline. They may not describe them as “straight” but they do usually say who they are going to be with which is practically the same thing.

    • SC

Because in our society, gay is considered, it’s significant that this character is gay (and it’s an important part of his role on the show).

    • Lila

I totally understand and agree with you in general, but the fact that the character is gay is like the whole point of his storyline and his interaction with a certain Glee kid…

      • The Jackal

So wouldn’t that be evident in the context of the show if you were to watch it?

      • The Jackal

If I see some guy flirting with another guy I would assume he was guy, just like I would assume that a male was heterosexual if I saw a him flirt with a girl. I don’t need to be hit over the head with it.

      • The Jackal

sorry, he was gay, not he was guy

      • Dorkophile

They always use words that explain the character’s storyline, for example if there was “new cheerleader Jane joins Glee club and vies for Puck’s attention,” it’s essentially doing the same thing. This is how they build plot through spoilers or teasers on this show. Like, I am sure there is more to him than being gay, and there is more to a cheerleader than being a cheerleader, but that is their device on the show.

      • The Jackal

Being gay and being a cheerleader are two different things. Being gay is something you are, being a cheerleader is something you do.

  • chocolateislove

    DARREN CRISS!

    • Liver

      Not just Darren Criss

      Darren f***ing Criss!!

Please tell me they’ll do a song from Very Potter Musical at some point. My heart would EXPLODE with happiness!

    • nerdfighter

Darren Criss is a lot less attractive
with short hair. What a shame.

      • Dylan

we should petition for him to grow it back

  • Briana

I less than three Darren Criss! However understands what I said, Starkids rule!

    • Dylan

      I miss my little pony

  • da

    Cannot. Wait. For. This. Episode.
And EW, you can post as many Glee articles as you want to. I will read them. Cause I’m a Gleek, and proud of it. :)

    • Jackie

Totally agree! Do we go on the multitude of articles about “Dancing with the Stars” and “Survivor” and complain about how many they post? Nope! Very much looking forward to the episode :)

      • Gleek

Hey, none of those shows had 10 fabulous articles posted in one day, detailing very aspect of the show. Down to the minutest detail.

  • Caio

I really loved the Teenage Dream cover and the Livin’ On a Prayer mashup sounds good, but I can’t help but agree that there is WAY too much auto-tune in the show. I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t obvious that very few of the castmembers actually need it, most of them being very talented, and a lot even broadway veterans.

    • ellen

      word^

    • Kate

I don’t hate Glee. It has catchy songs and makes me laugh a lot, and it can be a very sweet show. But thinking about it, Glee might be the death of music. Why? It homogenizes everything. Every different genre of music– pop, rock, Broadway, country– are all taken and made the same. The people singing are talented in real life, but are so autotuned on the show that they sound exactly alike. I can barely tell who is singing if I’m not watching, and that has nothing to do with the actual voices, it’s just the overproduction. I’ve heard Darren Criss sing before, and he has a great voice. But hearing Teenage Dream, he sounds just like everyone else on the show! For a show that tries to have so much diversity, in song choice and characters, it really homogenizes everything, and it’s a pity. And haven’t they sold more than the Beatles now? What does this mean for the future of music? Will all genres and artists lose their individuality and become Glee-ified? Maybe I’m overreacting. It’s just a thought.

      • HarryPotter123

I like Glee. What little plot there is, I enjoy it, but I totally agree. They autotune everything and everyone. Maybe some of these people don’t have the greatest voices, but they had to be good to get on the show. I feel like the only voice they don’t autotune is Mercedes’s. It frustrates me, and it keeps me from purchasing the songs. I love Darren Criss, but I didn’t buy Teenage Dream because it wasn’t really his voice: it was a machine.

  • Just Saying…

I am so amazed at all the comment boards I read. Why does everthing have be turned into a debate, trash talking, hate and back talking? Not to sound like a pollyanna, but ‘can’t we all just get along??’ Why does everything have to be a debate? Why can’t an article like this just be fun and bring up some excitement for the next episode for the fans of Glee. I love the show, I love the message, but I really just watch for entertainment. Why all the hate/debate over every little thing. Can’t we just take it for what it is…entertainment? Not every one likes the same entertainment, I get that. Fine…you don’t wanna watch..don’t…no one is forcing you to. I don’t care for alot of TV shows but I don’t go bashing them because of this that or the other…Sitcomes/DRamas/ whatever…there to entertain. If your not entertains, don’t waste your time and find something that does entertain you, but don’t make the people who are entertained listen to a hodge podge of negative crap just because you don’t like it. Why waste your or our time.

I am very excited for next weeks show, ever since the promo for Liven on a Prayer after last episode I have been waiting with bated breath. I don’t care about the auto tune…I am entertained and that is what I look for in a TV show. Glee entertains me, and I happy its around. I am sure I am not the only one.

    • Tarc

You… are an American of this decade, right? The land of pompus know-nothing that think ‘freedom of speech’ means the ability to air every random, ignorant thought in their heads with all the authority of an expert in the field. It’s disgusting and destrcutive, but that’s the way it is.

      • Nan

Wow, just wow… I am speechless at the offence in that message. I am completely offended, thank you.

  • ashy elbowz

Thank Jehovah we got some Glee news!!! I LOVE GLEE MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF!!! I just wish EW would cover it more!!!

  • Kate

The boys seem to have it this week…

  • suebrody

I can’t wait for Chris and Darren to sing together! (Christmas album features their duet.)

  • Zoey

Darren Criss will be he highlight of this episode. Teenage dream just solidifies that.

  • Perkle

For those who keep saying they can’t sing and are all auto tune, you’ve obviously haven’t heard them sing live. Some of the cast members have been on broadway, no auto tune there for sure. If you don’t like the show or the music, don’t watch or listen and stop posting about it. Surely you have better things to do with your time.

    • Rae

The problem isn’t that they can’t sing and are being auto-tuned (with the exception of Cory and maybe a few others), the problem is that they CAN sing and are being unnecessarily auto-tuned. Lea, Matthew, and now Darren are all phenomenal singers–why was the Warbler scene auto-tuned almost beyond recognition? Clearly the group is composed of phenomenal singers. Why not let it sound natural? That’s the issue I have; not that certain cast members can’t sing, but that the ones that can sound false and ridiculous.
