Scarlett Johansson gets 'Under the Skin'

Scarlett-JohanssonImage Credit: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic.comToday, Scarlett Johansson’s rep confirmed with EW that the actress had been cast as the star of Under the Skin, in which Johansson will play a sexy space alien who kidnaps human hitchhikers and sends them back to her home world to be served as exotic hor d’oeuvres. It sounds like a direct-to-video plot more suited for Species star Natasha Henstridge, except the director is none other than Jonathan Glazer, the hipster auteur behind 2000′s stylish British gangster movie Sexy Beast, as well as 2004′s Birth, the creepy drama that had Nicole Kidman falling in love with a 10-year-old boy. Apparently, this dark sci-fi comedy has been on the English director’s to-do list for years, but now, with a genuine starlet attached, it actually looks like it’s going to happen sometime in 2011.

Personally, I’m interested in whatever sort of weird movie Glazer decides to make, but I can’t help but wonder if, after the critical disappointment of Iron Man 2, Johansson should be avoiding skin-tight outfits and superhuman powers for a while. But what do you think, PopWatchers? Is this a good career move for Scarlett or not?

This is an updated version of an early Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man.

      Excellent! I’m intrigued… (But I’m admittedly a sci-fi junkie.)

Disappointment of Iron Man 2??? Please explain…

    • Dave

Not so hard to explain. Iron Man 2 was a good movie, but it wasn’t as good as the first, and somewhat of a disappointment because most people expected it to be a little better than it was.

  • Liz

Yeah, maybe I was the only one, but I thought she totally rocked Black Widow in IM2. So much so that it was my Halloween costume this year.

    • CP

      Liz,

Pics or it didn’t happen. ;)

Sounds like a cool storyline and I love both Glazer and Johansson.

Iron Man 2? A disappointment? Whatever, EW, whatever…

  • Jennifer

Yeah, her role in “Iron Man 2″ wasn’t very big, but the movie made about eleventy billion dollards and the feedback was pretty much unanimous worldwide that she looked amaaazing in that costume. How is that a disappointment?

  • DJ

Wearing skin tight outfits is her superpower.

  • KROCKEL

She is too fat to wear that. maybe she should get a trainer. But has she really done any brainy acting?

    • but p!

FAT? Seriously? Are you one of those sick people who only eat lettuce and then pukes it????

      • yepyep

        hahahahahahahahaha (take deep breathe)hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
        I agree but p!

She won a Tony award this year for appearing in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge

I guess it depends. For people who refer to it as “brainy acting,” she could have starred in an “American Pie” movie and bowled them over. For serious acting roles, though, check her out in “Girl with the Pearl Earring” and “The Prestige.”

I wouldn’t call Iron Man 2 a disappointment, but does anyone else notice that her films either tend to tank (The Island), her role is completely disposable (The Prestige, Black Dahlia) or she’s upstaged by better actors (Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona)?
I miss the ScarJo of the Lost in Translation and Ghost World days.

Yes she’s very talented based on her early work. She’s making some bad choices just to keep working. This movie looks like it’s going to be another mistake.

  • m1

She should be cast as the female lead in ‘The Secret of Their Eyes’ remake! Not this movie.

  • Katie

I love that book! Why didn’t you mention that “Under the Skin” is by Michel Faber?

  • Dave

    Sounds like a porno.

  • dan

Just saw Iron Man 2 and I cant understand why the critics slammed it. It was a fun movie just like the first. I thought the first was better but 2 was just as fun if you were willing to accpet the premise! I hate critics!

  • alan of montreal

Is Under the Skin a comedy? or sci-fi horror?

  • Meryl

I don’t see how IM2 is a disappoiintment, I thought it was really good and i can’t wait for the avengers and other superhero movies to be coming out soon.

S.J. is stolen biological material, taken against will and formed to clones line 200 pieces total. Sign of dangerous criminal activity. Original Scarlett Galabekian future pediatrician doctor, pediatrician nurse license she obtained in 2008.

UNDER THE SKIN is a really cool sci-fi novel. The character is really nerdy, damaged, and odd-looking. Short, wears leg braces, and has an unreal quality about her. The terrifying setup gives way to one of the strangest premises I’ve ever read. Definitely exciting to see this getting made after all these years.

And, as I am reading the book now, I see that the only similarity between Isserley and Johannson is the fact that both have spectacular breasts.

I also wonder how the darkness of the book becomes a ‘comedy.’
