Image Credit: Walt DisneyToday’s Wrap reports reveals that Relativity Media has made a deal with director Tarsem Singh (The Cell) to direct a 3-D adaptation of the Brother Grimm’s beloved fairy tale Snow White. Production on the film — described as “an edgy, modernized re-imagining” — is slated to begin in March. Sources say that Relativity is hot to cast do-no-wrong Natalie Portman, while Singh is curious about the power of casting an unknown, à la Tim Burton’s tapping of Mia Wasikowska for Alice in Wonderland.
Meanwhile, Universal proceeds apace with their own spin on the fairy tale. Their script, Snow White and the Huntsman, is said to focus less on those family-friendly dwarves. Disney has their own Snow White project in development, though their movie will feature the dwarves as Shaolin monks. Huh? At this point, I too am developing a Snow White project, though in my script, the dwarves are actually the result of a botched cloning experiment, and they feast on bluebirds and fight each other to the death while Snow White twirls around and does the wash. It’s gold, I tell ya.
What say you, PopWatchers? The more Snow White the merrier? Is Natalie Portman the obvious choice? Are there other fairy tales that beg for treatment?

“Relativity is hot to cast do-no-wrong Natalie Portman”? Seriously? “Do-no-wrong”… Have they not seen the ‘Star Wars’ prequels? That’s about as wrong as you can get. On the other hand, I thought Mia Wasikowska was fantastic in ‘Alice’, and while I haven’t seen it, I’ve heard she’s also been very good on the show ‘In Treatment’. That aside, if they could make a ‘Snow White’ that lives up to the original Grimm Brothers story, I’d be very happy. The closest I’ve ever seen is an old musical version with Dianna Rigg, where, when you take away the music, they actually stuck pretty close to the original story.
I think a lot of people divert blame from the actors (except Hayden Christensen) to George Lucas for the Star Wars prequels.
Here’s the thing, though. Even if you have a terrible script, a really great actor can make it not so bad. Sometimes, bad acting is just bad acting.
They may have been bad, but they still made lots and lots of $. In Hollywood, that’s “Do-no-wrong.”
I agree that Portman came off badly in the SW prequals. Then I saw ‘V for Vendetta’ and it changed my mind about her.
umm didnt they do this already with Amanda Bynes in the movie Sydney White which I LOVED!
I love a good fairy tale retelling, so I am eager with anticipation.
A few years ago I was waiting for the rapunzel retelling, but now Tangled is coming, so that’s good. I would still like to see a modern day rapunzel though.
Maybe Rumplestiltskin?
I have the perfect idea. Snow White flees her evil stepmother and winds up on a strange island where she meets seven dwarves who are the last remnants of a strange ’70s experiment. And there’s polar bears for some reason.
Someone needs to turn Bill Willingham’s Fables into a tv show, hopefully a cable network. He has a kick ass Snow White in that comic.
I’d like to see Kat Dennings as Snow White in one of these projects.
…Or Krysten Ritter. She’d make a great Snow White.
They did a retelling about 5 years ago maybe. With Sigourney Weaver as the evil queen/witch. It was pretty gory, scary.
Wasn’t that on TV? With Lana from Smallville as Snow White?
I saw the one with Kristin Kreuk, that was a different one. But a very interesting take on the story!
I think Anne Hathaway would be better (maybe just because I’m such a huge fan of hers). I’d love to see my favorite Disney Princess Aurora get an edgier treatment, with Amanda Seyfried as Aurora.
What about a less used fairytale like King Grizzlebeard?
Natalie Portman is too old and besides, it would be distracting. I prefer an unknown.
Natalie Portman would do a good job, but it’s such a predictable choice. I’d like to see someone completely unknown, or maybe a likable young star who just hasn’t had that big break yet. But either way, I’m so looking forward to this new adaptation. If you read original versions of fairy tales there’s some seriously creepy, nightmarish imagery in there that could make a great movie. Even though I didn’t care for The Cell, Singh might be the right guy to capture the freaky aspects of the story.
GEMMA ARTERTON! She would be absolutely perfect. She was excellent in Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Alice Creed!
Gemma Arterton would be great! She looks just like snow white. She was in Clash of the Titans wasn’t she?
Everyone suggested here is WAY too old, and old-looking! The girl should look relatively teenage.
I pick Emily Browning. Red lips check, dark hair, check, porcelain skin, check. And the girl can act.
Can’t ever have too many Snow White films, at least in my opinion.
