'Mad Men' season finales are always awesome

mad-men-413Image Credit: Michael Yarish/AMCHow is it the Mad Men season finale already?! I’m not ready! It’s too soon. But at least I can comfort myself with one shred of hope: Tonight’s episode will be awesome, because Mad Men season finales are a thing of beauty.

Season 1′s finale, “The Wheel,” gave us what might be the single greatest pitch Don Draper ever delivered: His “it’s a time machine” monologue reduced Harry, and me, to tears. Lest we forget, that’s also the episode where Don officially made Peggy a junior copywriter, where Betty reached out to Glen through the car window, and oh yeah — where Peggy had her baby. A pretty packed episode! READ FULL STORY »

Why is Dexter the only good character on 'Dexter'?

Categories: Dexter, Television

dexterImage Credit: Dan Littlejohn/ShowtimeI could listen to Michael C. Hall’s haunting, dark voice-overs from Dexter all day. I love Dexter’s internal conflict between acting normal and trying actually to be normal. I like when Dexter talks to Harry. But the moments on the show that are about anyone else just leave me sort of bored. Why must everyone who’s not Dexter be so lame? READ FULL STORY »

EW Reunions: 'The West Wing' cast talk President Obama, and where their characters are now

Reunions_West-WingThe cast of The West Wing must really enjoy each other’s company. Our reunion shoot for the Emmy-laden NBC drama was scheduled for a Sunday morning — early Sunday morning, at a dive bar in East Los Angeles, on one of the hottest days of the waning summer. Some of the women were scheduled to arrive at 7 a.m. Again: On a Sunday.

But Martin Sheen (President Josiah Bartlet), Allison Janney (C.J. Cregg), Bradley Whitford (Josh Lyman), Elisabeth Moss (Zoey Bartlet), Dulé Hill (Charlie Young), Janel Moloney (Donna Moss), Kathryn Joosten (Dolores Landingham), and Stockard Channing (Abigail Bartlet) could not have been more game to reconnect and reminisce about the show, its impact on the culture and their careers, its eerie parallels with Barack Obama’s ascent to the real White House, and where their characters would be today.   READ FULL STORY »

'Mad Men' season finale: Predictions, theories, and Matthew Weiner on Don Draper's dark year

Categories: Mad Men, Television

mad-men-413Image Credit: Michael Yarish/AMCIs it is just me, or do Mad Men seasons fly by way too fast? ARGH! The season finale is upon us, and another epic wait between new episodes is about to begin. Season 4 has been a great ride. I’ve been riveted by its focus on Don Draper’s addictions, dawning self-awareness, and struggling effort to change. I’ve loved how Don’s inner angst was mirrored in the workplace story lines—the “phantom punch” Samsonite ad; the loss of Lucky Strike—and in the other characters, from Peggy’s emerging social conscience to Joan’s own frustration with the repeating patterns of her life, to all things Sally. And I’ve greatly enjoyed the show’s clever intersections with history, Ali-Liston II to Beatlemania. Overall: Awesome. READ FULL STORY »

EW Reunions: 'Scream 4' cast talks about the latest installment

Courteney-Cox-ArquetteImage Credit: JAMES DIMMOCK FOR EWThe stars of Scream — David Arquette, Courteney Cox, and Neve Campbell — had a good reason to get back together for EW’s Reunions photo shoot on July 20: They were already together in Ann Arbor, Mich., filming the highly anticipated fourth film in the hit slasher franchise. Scream 4, due in theaters April 15, finds sheriff Dewey (Arquette), former tabloid newshound Gale (Cox), and newly published author Sidney (Campbell) once again targeted by the knife-wielding Ghostface. “For years now, it’s always been ‘When are you guys gonna do another one?’ ” says Campbell, 37. “And I’d say, ‘No, no.’ And here we are!”

So what can Scream fans expect from this latest installment of the horror phenomenon? Well, first of all, Sidney has written a self-help book. “She ends the book tour with going to Woodsboro and there she finds her cousin and her aunt and some friends and trouble ensues,” says Campbell. (It’s Kind of a Funny Story‘s Emma Roberts plays Sid’s cousin, Jill, and Battlestar Galactica‘s Mary McDonnell plays Sid’s aunt, Kate).

Meanwhile, Gale and Dewey have settled into a life of domestic bliss in Woodsboro, which is driving Gale nuts. (At the time of EW’s interview, the real-life couple, Cox and Arquette, were pre-separation, still enjoying domestic bliss themselves.) “We’ve been married for 10 years,” says Cox. “I kinda gave up my job as the entertainment journalist. I’ve written six books, but now I have major writer’s block. I’m bored with my life and bored with my marriage and bored with the silly small town of Woodsboro.” READ FULL STORY »

'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Recap: Mandalore rots from the head down

star-wars-clone-warsImage Credit: Lucasfilm Ltd. & TMYou have to hand it to Star Wars: The Clone Wars for taking some major risks in its third season. First, the series hasn’t lately put the spotlight on icons from the movies like Anakin and Obi-Wan. Instead it’s devoted episodes to lesser known characters like Baron Papanoida, Senator Chuchi, Bail Organa, Shaak Ti, and Duchess Satine. The objective of the series now is clear: to show that the Star Wars galaxy encompasses many more stories beyond those related to the Skywalker clan. Second, with the exception of the season premiere episode, The Clone Wars hasn’t featured…well, much of the Clone Wars.

Last night’s episode, “The Academy,” followed up on “Corruption” with another story set on Mandalore. READ FULL STORY »

140 characters of funny: CBS developing yet another Twitter comedy based on 'Dear Girls Above Me'

Deadline is reporting that CBS — home of the current sitcom $#*! My Dad Saysis turning to Twitter yet again for another potential comedy. This time, it’s the “Dear Girls Above Me” Twitter feed, about a fictional guy who writes missives to the two party girls who live upstairs. (Sample tweet: “Dear Girls Above Me, ‘He totally drunk friend requested me at 3 am! Should I reject it and sober add him tomorrow?’ Don’t, he’ll hangover ignore you.”) This appears to be a trend: In September, CBS greenlit another comedy based on the Twitter stream “Shh, Don’t Tell Steve”. I guess good sitcoms have been built on less. Are we excited about this? And what Twitter streams deserve the call next?

ABC to air 'Skating With the Stars'. Whose double Salchow are you dying to see?

SKATING-WITH-CELEBRITIESImage Credit: Joe Viles/FoxABC just announced that when the current season of Dancing With the Stars tangos off the stage, it will be replaced with a six-episode run of Skating With the Stars. Because what’s funnier then questionably coordinated B-listers in sequins? Questionably coordinated B-listers in sequins … on ice.

As soon as I heard about this edition, my mind flew back to that Fox show Skating With Celebrities from 2006 (pictured here) that found stars like Kristy Swanson, Bruce Jenner, and Todd Fields stumbling and bumbling with actual figure skaters like Nancy Kerrigan and Lloyd Eisler in a pairs competition. (Kristy Swanson and Lloyd Eisler ended up winning. And then hooking up. The pair are now married.) It was similar to Dancing, in that so much seemed to depend on how physically adept the star was. But on Skating, it seemed like female celebrities had an immediate advantage, because at least the professional men had impressive-looking lifts to fall back on, even if the star was a subpar skater. There was only so much the professional ladies could do with their mediocre male stars. I wonder how ABC’s version will deal with that? And which stars do you want to see strap the skates on? (The cast will be revealed on Nov. 2.) I nominate Moira Kelly!
