'The Hobbit' will shoot in New Zealand after all. Well, maybe. Hopefully. We'll see.

Peter-Jackson-GandalfImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosSome day, someone is going to make a movie about the attempt to make a movie based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, but instead of wizards and swordplay and stirring derring-do, it’ll be filled with lawyers and picket signs and angry e-mails. Today alone, director Peter Jackson and producing-and-life partner Fran Walsh reportedly issued a blistering statement condemning the local New Zealand actors’ union, NZ Actors’ Equity, which last month had called on fellow international actors unions (including SAG) to boycott The Hobbit to pressure the production for a new contract for local actors. Jackson and Walsh called the union leadership “gutless” and “self-centered,” and noted ominously that next week execs from Warner Bros. “are coming down to NZ to make arrangements to move the production off-shore.”

Within hours of that statement, NZ Actors’ Equity, along with the larger Screen Production and Development Association, issued their own statement announcing that they would not boycott The Hobbit, and they were imploring all other actors unions to follow suit.

Which would be great news, if the first line of Jackson and Walsh’s earlier statement did not start with this declaration: “The lifting of the blacklist [i.e. boycott] on The Hobbit does nothing to help the films stay in New Zealand.”

My full recap will be up at midnight (UPDATE: Click here to see Dalton’s detailed Survivor recap), but if you’ve already watched and want to sound off on the people sent home, then read on after the jump for more. Little kids re-enact 'Project Runway' and really make it work

I’ve been a huge fan of the kids who re-enact our favorite guilty pleasure reality shows since I saw them take on The Hills. Then they outdid themselves with The Real Housewives of New Jersey. But, thankfully, they’re back, and this time around, they found a more creative over-the-top show to lampoon. Just in time for the Project Runway finale, the kids have taken a stab at the fashion-forward Lifetime series, and they’re playing with all its major stereotypes: the foreign designer with a drawn-on swirly mustache, the ruthless competitor, the over-emotional one, Tim Gunn being vastly unsatisfied with the work ten minutes before the runway, Michael Kors’ point-perfect insults (little Michael Kors is my favorite part of this video), Heidi Klum’s perfect side bangs, an air double kiss that’s done over a foot away from the other person! These kids do indeed make it work. (See the video embedded after the jump.) READ FULL STORY »

Johnny Depp wants to play Nick Charles in a remake of 'The Thin Man.' Sounds brilliant. But who should play Nora?

Categories: Johnny Depp, Movies

Johnny-Depp-MarshallImage Credit: PR Photos; Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosIt must be fun being the most powerful actor in Hollywood: At this point, Johnny Depp just gets a glimmer of an idea in his head and — poof! — it’s suddenly one of the hottest projects in town. Depp’s latest brainstorm is playing boozy, bantering detective Nick Charles, one half of the legendarily quick-witted and perpetually soused crime-solving couple Nick and Nora Charles, in a new adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s classic novel The Thin Man. Depp’s rep confirmed with EW that the actor is developing a Thin Man project through his production company, Infinitum Nihil, and Warner Bros. already has a short list of potential screenwriters. Some film buffs might consider this yet another unnecessary remake — if not a downright sacrilegious one — arguing that the original Nick and Nora, William Powell and Myrna Loy, who starred in six Thin Man films in the 1930s and ’40s, can’t possibly be improved upon. Maybe, maybe not. But if anyone is going to make a go of it, Depp certainly seems like a worthy candidate. Does any major star working today do boozy banter better?

It’s unclear at this point how soon this project might come together. Depp is keen to have Rob Marshall, with whom he’s currently working on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, direct the movie, which is being conceived as a stylized period piece with a musical number or two. But Depp is already slated to star in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, and, according to Vulture (which originally broke this story), Marshall is flirting with directing a big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, so we may need to knock back a few martinis while we wait for this one. Still, it’s never too soon to start armchair-quarterbacking and fantasy-casting. What do you think of the idea? And who would you like to see play Nora to Depp’s Nick?

'Twilight Zone' movie gets a writer. Which episodes should he adapt?

twilight-zone-Serve-ManNow that Warner Bros. has reportedly hired a writer for its new Twilight Zone movie — Jason Rothenberg, whose only credit appears to be a 2009 TV movie called Body Politic – we thought we’d waste some time thinking about which episodes of the vintage TV show Rothenberg should adapt. As you’ll recall, the 1983 big-screen version updated four classic stories from Rod Serling’s old series — “Time Out,” “Kick the Can,” It’s a Good Life,” and “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” — with each segment directed by a different big-name filmmaker (Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, John Landis, and George Miller). That only leaves 152 other original episodes to choose from. Decisions, decisions… Read on for my picks:

“The Invaders”: Betty White could play the elderly farm woman who discovers that a mini flying saucer has landed in the attic of her country cabin. There isn’t a lot of dialogue in the episode — the woman mostly grunts as she swats at the tiny marauding aliens with an axe — but you do hear the alien SOS broadcast at the end, warning of a planet filled with giants. Then you see the writing on the side of the space ship: US Air Force Space Probe 1.

“To Serve Man”: I’m seeing Will Ferrell as the big-brained Kanamit alien (see photo above) who comes to Earth carrying a book titled To Serve Man. Steve Carell could play Michael Chambers, the code-breaker who discovers that the tome is actually… A high-protein, low-carb Atkins for Aliens cookbook! READ FULL STORY »

Ouija board game movie will be action-packed

Ouija-board-movieImage Credit: Time & Life Pictures Creative/Getty Images It looks like the Ouija movie, unbelievably, continues to be real. The L.A. Times reports that Michael Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes, which owns the rights to the title, are in serious talks with Taken director Pierre Morel to helm the film. This corroborates producer Brad Fuller’s hints that the Ouija movie will in fact be a rollicking action-adventure flick in which protagonists will periodically gather around an Ouija board, link hands, and solemnly consult nearby spirits as to the best course of action.

With a Battleship film in the works, talks of a Monopoly film, and now Ouija, it’s as if our entire childhoods will soon have film adaptations. What’s next? Chess: 3-D? Quick, somebody purchase the rights to Tic Tac Toe! At least, however, there’s a little bit more to Ouija than a recognizable brand name: Ouija actually started as a spiritual artifact, an occult divining tool that was even briefly used during World War I. The Parker Brothers slapped an electronic voice box on it and popularized it as a toy, but the Ouija board has a plenty of history and culture behind it.

The history of the Ouija board may or may not factor in the plot; there are as many possibilities as there are words that the Ouija board can spell. Personally, I’m imagining a family-friendly adventure film in the vein of National Treasure, but instead of Benjamin Gate’s esoteric knowledge of American history, an Ouija board will propel the plot along.

What do you think, PopWatchers? What’s the Ouija movie going to be like? What seemingly unadaptable fad should Hollywood adapt next? I just hope they don’t make a Furby movie.

The search for a great TV space comedy continues. Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon could be the ones to get it right.

Thomas-Lennon-Robert-Ben-GarantImage Credit: Eric Charbonneau/Wireimage.comWho knows if we’ll ever see Boldly Going Nowhere, the space comedy the guys from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia developed (then retooled) for Fox to no avail. Perhaps it’s time we turn our hopes to Reno 911!‘s Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, who are about to shoot a pilot for a comedy called Alabama for FX. Set a thousand years in the future, the show takes place on the space craft Alabama, which is on a seven-year mission to maintain interplanetary peace. Deadline has the lastest casting info, which includes Austin Powers’ Frau Farbissina Mindy Sterling as the ship’s doctor and Last Comic Standing‘s Natasha Leggero guesting as “Roxy Sexbot.” Lennon will star as the ship’s acting captain and Garant as his robot second in command.

Back in August, Lennon spoke to Collider and detailed what we could expect, “Reno 911!-meets-Battlestar Galactica.” He promised sexual tension (the crew is supposed to be abstinent, but everyone on the ship showers together), and plotlines like the crew having to destroy the cute Elmo-like alien race that wants to prosecute them for war crimes; the crew passing through a nebula that has them hearing each other’s thoughts; and the crew running into themselves as babies and having to keep their younger selves alive so that the adult them can exist at the present time. Sounds promising, right? It could be the best thing since NewsRadio‘s what-if “Space” episode (watch that below). READ FULL STORY »

Stars come out for Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall benefit

Categories: Movies, Music

Paul-Newman-Hole-in-the-Wall-campsImage Credit: Ron Galella/WireImage.comIt’s been two years since Paul Newman passed away, but the legacy he built on- and off-screen continues to thrive. I can’t help but think of him every time I lose a game of pool (often), eat a hard-boiled egg (occasionally), or smell my office neighbor’s microwaved popcorn (daily! Close your door, snack fiend!). Over the years, so much of that popcorn fortune has gone to Newman’s Hole in the Wall Camps, which have provided free life-altering fun for children across the world with serious medical issues. Tomorrow night at New York’s Lincoln Center, Bill Cosby, Meryl Streep, and Stevie Wonder will join a collection of entertainers, including Newman’s widow, Joanne Woodward, as they honor Newman’s charity efforts with “A Celebration of Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Camps.” If you’re in Manhattan looking for fun — or you’re simply out of salad dressing — you should check it out.

'Piranha 3D' sequel to be made by the team behind the 'Feast' franchise

Categories: Horror, Movies

The sequel to this summer’s big-screen bloodfest Piranha 3D will be directed by John Gulager and written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. The trio previously collaborated on 2005′s Feast, the third feature to be birthed by the Project Greenlight TV show. Melton and Dunstan have also written the last four Saw movies, including next week’s Saw 3D.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the mayhem-filled Piranha 3D — which was directed by Alexander Aja and penned by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger — I’m going to give this news two soon-to-be-gnawed-to-the-bone-by-hungry-fish thumbs up. Feast was easily the best of the Project Greenlight efforts. I recently re-watched this tale of monsters menacing the denizens of a desert bar while researching our Rockers in Scary Movies gallery and it really is a terrific reminder that just because a film is really dumb doesn’t mean it has to be really stupid. If the trio keep that in mind as they start prepping whatever the blue blazes the Piranha 3D sequel is going to be called, then they won’t go far wrong.

You can catch the trailers for both Piranha 3D and Feast after the jump.
