TV Insiders podcast: EW experts preview the 'Project Runway' finale, discuss Bristol Palin in a monkey suit, and name the best show on TV

Project Runway is down to the final three contestants, but while it looks like Mondo has the title all but wrapped up, is there a chance he might actually lose to Andy or Gretchen? Our resident Runway expert, Missy Schwartz, has seen the final collections, and joins the TV Insiders (Michael Slezak, Michael Ausiello, Annie Barrett and yours truly) to talk all about it on our latest TV Insiders podcast. Could there be an upset in the making, or is it Mondo all the way? Also on the menu this week: Entertainment Weekly critic Ken Tucker pops by to give us his pick for the best show on TV. Could it be The Good Wife? Modern Family? Or is there a dark horse in the mix? He also gets into a deliciously nasty spat with Ausiello over his pick for biggest TV disappointment this season. FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! Plus, Slezak eats serious crow for last week’s fearless (and foolhardy) Dancing With The Stars prediction, and we contemplate how in the name of the Medallion of Power Marty managed to not get voted off of Survivor: Nicaragua. All that and more (Mad Men! Glee! Raising Hope!) on the latest edition of the TV Insiders. Either download the mp3 file here to listen on the go, or click on the video player below (after the jump). And if you’d like to have your TV question addressed and answered on the next edition, just tweet it to @EWDaltonRoss.

'The Hobbit': Martin Freeman to play Bilbo Baggins; other roles also cast

Movie fans, nerds of all stripes, and aficionados of small, furry-footed hominids, take heed! The cast of director Peter Jackson’s long-awaited, much-delayed, crazily anticipated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy epic The Hobbit is finally officially taking shape! As EW predicted, English actor Martin Freeman, best known for his deadpan portrayal of cubicle drone Tim Canterbury in the original BBC version of The Office as well as the films Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Hot Fuzz, will play the Hobbit hero Bilbo Baggins, who is reluctantly recruited by Gandalf the Wizard and a company of Dwarves to join in a dangerous quest for a dragon’s treasure. “Despite the various rumors and speculation surrounding this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us,” Jackson said in a statement, calling Freeman “intelligent, funny, surprising, and brave — exactly like Bilbo.” Jackson also announced that Richard Armitage, who has starred in the British TV series MI-5, will play the leader of the company of Dwarves, Thorin Oakenshield, while Irish actor Aidan Turner  and English actor Rob Kazinsky will play the Dwarves Fili and Kili. Rounding out the cohort of Dwarves thus far will be Graham McTavish (24) as Dwalin; John Callen (TV’s Power Rangers Jungle Fury) as Oin; Stephen Hunter (TV’s All Saints) as Bombur; Mark Hadlow (King Kong) as Dori; and Peter Hambleton (TV’s The Strip) as Gloin.

There you have it, Middle-earthlings. Now Jackson just needs to get past the sticky labor-union issues and start shooting this thing. (Well, after casting Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Ori, Nori, Balin, Beorn, Bard, and all the other roles, of course.) What do you think? After all these endless months of build-up, can you get any more amped for The Hobbit? Is Freeman the Bilbo of your dreams? Or did you imagine someone else putting on the ring?

Colin Farrell may be headed to Mars for 'Total Recall' remake

Categories: Movies, Sci-Fi

Colin-Farrell-Total-RecallImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Everett CollectionColin Farrell’s career has taken some wildly unpredictable and improbable twists and turns over the years, so it makes a weird kind of sense that he may soon find himself stepping into a role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sources tell EW that Farrell is on the short list of actors being considered to star in Sony’s planned reboot of the 1990 sci-fi film Total Recall, which starred Schwarzenegger as a man who discovers that all of his memories have been implanted and he’s actually a secret agent with powerful enemies on the planet Mars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the other actors in the final running for the project—which is expected to hew closer to Philip K. Dick’s original story, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” than the Schwarzenegger film—are Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender, but one source close to the negotiations confirms their reporting that Farrell has the pole position and may be close to receiving an offer. If so, it would clinch a remarkable turnaround for Farrell. The rakish Irish actor’s career hit the skids after the problem-plagued Miami Vice bombed at the box office (a debacle he told EW earlier this year he doesn’t exactly have total recall of, given his out-of-control partying at the time). But Farrell’s career has been on a dramatic upswing again lately following well-received turns in films like In Bruges and Crazy Heart, and he has recently wrapped work on two other high-profile studio movies, Horrible Bosses and Fright Night.

Personally, as much as I like Farrell, I’m still finding it hard to wrap my head around any actor in Total Recall other than Ah-nuld, who had such an inimitable way with lines like, “If I am not me, then who the hell am I?” and “Cohaagen, you got what you want. Give these people air!” But what do you think? Does the idea of Colin Farrell in Total Recall work for you? Do you think Hardy or Fassbender would fit the bill better? Or are you of the mind that, after his stint as governor ends, Schwarzenegger himself should get his ass back to Mars?

If Dakota Fanning stars in the adaptation of 'If I Stay,' tissues will be needed (in a good way)

dakota-fanningImage Credit: Maury Phillips/WireImage.comDakota Fanning is in talks to star in Summit’s adaptation of the young adult novel If I Stay by Gayle Forman, Variety reports. In case you haven’t read the book — or the blog post I wrote after my eyes repeatedly welled up — she’ll play Mia, a 17-year-old girl from Oregon who gets into a car accident with her parents and younger brother. The choice of whether she stays (lives) or goes (dies) is hers and plays out over a 196-page outerbody experience that you can read in one sitting.

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke was originally attached to the film but dropped out to helm Red Riding Hood, and Brazilian filmmaker Heitor Dhalia has stepped in, the trade reports. This is a great, age-appropriate role for 16-year-old Fanning, whose wise-beyond-her-years demeanor will serve well the story of a young woman grappling with a decision that no teen should ever have to face. Forman has written a second book, Where She Went, which hits shelves in April 2011. (Don’t click that link if you don’t want a spoiler.) With that sequel and Summit, home of the Twilight Saga, behind it, the movie should be able to find an audience. I’d love to see a young, talented actress like Fanning carry a successful film. What about you?

Zombie legend George Romero says he is unlikely to direct an episode of 'The Walking Dead': 'I have my own little franchise'

George-A-Romero-DeadImage Credit: Michael GibsonLegendary horror director George Romero has told EW he is unlikely to direct an episode of Frank Darabont’s new AMC zombie show The Walking Dead, which debuts this Halloween. There has been a lot of speculation over the past few months that Romero — who effectively invented the modern zombie genre with his 1968 shocker Night of the Living Dead and has since made five sequels — might oversee an episode if AMC commissioned the show for a second season. Just a couple of days ago, Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd told me that it was a “dream” of Darabont’s to bring Romero onboard.

Yesterday, Romero informed EW, in the nicest possible way, that the Shawshank Redemption director’s dream is likely to remain just that. “I don’t know that I would really want to,” he said. “It’s not mine, you know. I have my own little franchise on the side over here. I think I’d rather stick with my [zombies] rather than get involved. But Frank’s a terrific filmmaker and I’m sure he’ll do a great job with it.”

Michelle Trachtenberg and Josh Schwartz developing new drama for The CW

Trachtenberg-SchwartzThe crazy bitch is back. Georgina Sparks may have left Gossip Girl and Dan Humphrey with baby Milo in tow, but Michelle Trachtenberg won’t be leaving the CW for long. Variety is reporting that the network has issued a script deal for an untitled drama starring Trachtenberg with Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage as executive producers. Trachtenberg will play a young criminology student with a dark past and will also earn a producing credit. What About Brian‘s Stuart Zicherman is also on board as writer/executive producer.

Trachtenberg is no stranger to the CW, becoming a regular on Buffy the Vampire Slayer from 2000-2003, back when the network was still The WB (remember those frog promos?), and has had a recurring role on Gossip Girl over its four seasons, managing to pop up whenever things start to get boring normal. Josh Schwartz is certainly fond of his former actors: After a guest appearance on Chuck, former O.C. star Rachel Bilson recently signed on to star in Schwartz’s new project Ghost Angels, a NBC romantic comedy about an Los Angeles woman who can see dead people. (The well of pretty female crime solvers with a weird connection to dead people has yet to run dry?)

What do you think, PopWatchers? Does Josh Schwartz have another O.C./Chuck/Gossip Girl on his hands? Is Michelle Trachtenberg enough to get you excited about this project? Which former Schwartz star (cough Adam Brody cough) deserves his or her own series?

Ron Shelton to pen minor league baseball comedy for TBS. Can we call up Costner (or Russell)?

Bull-Durham-writer-Ron-SheltonImage Credit: Everett Collection; ric Charbonneau/Le Studio/WireImage.comWhen someone told me that TBS ordered a pilot for an hour-long comedy series set in the world of minor league baseball, my reaction was, “God, I wish Ron Shelton was doing that.” Then, the best thing happened: I found out he is. The Oscar-nominated Bull Durham scribe will write and exec produce Hound Dogs, which, according to TBS, centers on a general manager and his team as they ”try to handle life’s ups and downs, both in and out of the locker room.” As he did with Bull Durham, Shelton will draw from his own experience as a minor league ballplayer.

This is awesome for multiple reasons: For starters, TBS is trying to get into the hour comedy game, and Shelton writes the kind of dialogue that can comfortably and cleverly fill the space. (Pause as you recite Crash Davis’ “I believe in” speech… and cut to commercial!) Also, as you’ll recall from Bull Durham, there is much comedy to be mined in the minors — from the stupid promotions at the ballparks, to the rituals of players desperate to make it to the show or just keep playing, to the groupies. Lastly, this should be an opportunity to lure a great actor to cable (to preside over the roster of series regulars who look great in a uniform). So, who would you like to see play the manager?

My dream scenario: Kevin Costner decides reteaming with Shelton, with whom he also did Tin Cup, is a reason to come to TV. I chatted with Shelton in 2005, when EW named Kevin Costner the MVP of our list of the 30 greatest sports movies on DVD, and he said he’d love to work with Costner again. “I love making sports movies with Kevin. Kevin and I are always talking about making a movie. Finding the ones we agree on, and the time in his schedule and mine, is always the trick, but we’ve both said many times we’d like to do some more work together.” READ FULL STORY »

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos developing ABC comedy. Oh, how cute!

Kelly-Ripa-Mark-ConseulosImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosEver since taking on EW’s late shift a few months back, I’ve spent my now-free mornings on a treadmill watching LIVE! With Regis & Kelly. This is partly because Kelly Ripa’s impeccable biceps inspire me (seriously, how can a woman with three children manage to find time to work out like that? It’s enough pressure for me to go to the gym with one cat at home), but mostly because Ripa’s contagious sense of humor is the only thing that gets me through the banality of the gym. (So, no, that wasn’t sarcasm in the headline.)

So — as someone who now annoys loved ones by beginning nearly every sentence with “Today, on Regis & Kelly… ” — I couldn’t be happier to see that Ripa is once again taking on scripted television for the first time since Hope & Faith was canceled in 2006. ABC has confirmed with EW that Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos have signed on to produce and star in a single-camera comedy for the network. According to ABC, the show — called Port Love — is just a script deal for the time being, but its concept is promising enough: Deadline claims the series revolves around the backstage drama of a network series. (I’m envisioning 30 Rock-meets-All My Children-meets … Regis & Kelly.)

Apparently, Consuelos would be the star of the series, with Ripa only set to recur on Love. READ FULL STORY »
