'Battlestar Galactica' prequel: SyFy greenlights another Cylon spin-off, 'Blood and Chrome'

bsg-15-thingsImage Credit: Zoic Studios/SyFyBattlestar Galactica ended in March, 2009, and the prequel-spin-off Caprica has never had BSG‘s cultural prominence. (Or its ratings.) Now, it looks like Syfy is hitting the reset button on the Prequel Option: This time, more space violence! According to a press release from Syfy, the network has just greenlit a new two-hour pilot for Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, set ten years into the first Cylon war (which would place it about four decades before BSG). The pilot centers on a young William Adama, played by Edward James Olmos in BSG and an adorably annoying child actor in Caprica. Right now, it’s still just a TV movie that might become a series… but let’s be fair, if this thing is half as good as Caprica, it’s going to get at least one season.

Blood & Chrome sounds like a purposeful step back into the political tension and breakneck Viper battles of BSG, which is exciting. Still, I’m worried that this means the end is nigh for the slower, more thoughtful Caprica. And as someone who’s fundamentally suspicious of prequels, I’m pessimistic about any young actor trying to inhabit the Adama character. (Wouldn’t it have been better to focus on someone else?)

But this is still exciting news … right, PopWatchers? What do you think? Does Blood & Chrome sound action-y enough for you? Or would you prefer a different take on the BSG mythos? And am I the only one who keeps confusing the title with Spartacus: Blood & Sand? Blood and Sand and Chrome, Oh My!

'Rabbit Hole' trailer: Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart move us ... to pack Kleenex

Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

I’m a big fan of John Cameron Mitchell’s last movie Shortbus, so I was excited to see him take on an emotionally complex project like Rabbit Hole, a drama based on the Broadway play of the same name. In it, a successful suburban couple (played by Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart) cope with the accidental death of their young son. The duo are already earning Oscar talk after the film’s well-regarded showing at Toronto and now the trailer has landed online. See it embedded after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'The View,' 'The Talk,' and Katie Couric all diss 'Glee' GQ spread

Categories: Art, Sexytimes, Television

Lea-Michele-GQImage Credit: Lea Michele GQ Shoot by TERRY RICHARDSONIf there’s one thing the world will apparently never tire of, it’s policing young women’s sexuality. Be cute, but not like that. It’s okay to be sexy, but only in the ways that I think are decent. I can’t consider context, because I’m too distracted by your breasts. Congratulations, Dianna Agron and Lea Michele, you’re the lucky winners of this week’s global tsk-tsking. It’s okay to wear schoolgirl outfits, talk dirty sometimes, and be sexually aggressive, but only if you do it as a character on a TV show. If you do it in a magazine, you’ve disappointed Katie Couric. READ FULL STORY »

This Week on Stage: 'Lombardi' and 'La Bête' bring football and Molière to Broadway

Broadway-LombardiImage Credit: Joan MarcusStage buzz for the past week has been all about stars — or, in some cases, “stars” — coming to New York City’s Great White Way: Porn legend Jenna Jameson is flirting with joining ’80s jukebox musical Rock of Ages; Robin Williams is headed to Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo; Donny and Marie Osmond will do a limited engagement of a Christmas show in December; and Chris Rock is making his Broadway debut as the sponsor to an AA parolee in The Motherf–ker With the Hat. Now, if only all five would star together in the same show, that would be interesting… right? The past couple weeks, too, saw the Broadway openings of David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, La Bête, and Lombardi (starring Dan Lauria and Judith Light, pictured above), as well as Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake ballet, all of which were recently reviewed here on EW.com:

A Life in the Theatre: I praised this B+ play revival for its genius casting of Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight: “Stewart and Knight, both at the top of their game here, embrace the strange spirit of the show and imbue Mamet’s 26 madcap vignettes with a feeling of buoyant, urgent comedy that elicits lots of laughs — and only the occasional grimace.” (Opened 10/12)

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson: EW music writer Simon Vozick-Levinson gave this new-to-Broadway rock musical an A and praised the rock musical readily: “If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for? Shows this weird and wonderful don’t make it to Broadway every day.” (Opened 10/13) READ FULL STORY »

'Bones' spin-off in development: Who would you cast?

Categories: Bones, Television

Bones-Spin-offImage Credit: Greg Gayne/FoxBones creator Hart Hanson is developing a potential spin-off, Fox confirms with EW. As first reported by Deadline, it would revolve not around an existing character — fans, breathe! — but tracker Walter Sherman, the central figure in “The Locator” novels by Richard Greener. If all goes according to plan, Hanson will introduce Sherman in an episode Fox says he’ll shoot in early December for air next year. In the books, Sherman is a Vietnam vet, but in the Bones world, Sherman will be a former military policeman who served in Iraq with Booth (David Boreanaz). Just as Booth didn’t originally get along with socially-challenged Brennan, he and Sherman — who suffered brain damage overseas that left him “skeptical of every statement” and prone to asking “offensive, seemingly irrelevant questions which oddly enough turn out to be extremely relevant” — will butt heads. Brennan, on the other hand, will be fascinated by him — which means he’s very good at his job (hence the nickname The Locator). If the network believes Hanson’s found a true leading man, the character could spin-off to his own series. (How very JAG to NCIS to NCIS: Los Angeles of them.) Hanson is looking to cast an actor in his late 20s or 30s.

So, what do you think? It could be nice for Bones to have someone to do a crossover episode with that makes more sense than The Family Guy. In the crowded procedural field, the character sounds somewhat original. (Though not as cool as crime scene cleaner Webster Fillmore Goodhue, the focus of the Alan Ball HBO pilot starring Bright Star‘s Ben Whishaw.) Who would you cast? This is a tough one: It needs to be someone with a believable physique for military police, who can act amusingly paranoid and reclusive, but who is also very attractive (I’m assuming). I don’t know how old Theo Alexander, who played Talbot on True Blood last season is, but we know he can wear a suit and deliver biting dialogue. (Can he do an American accent?) Fox would probably want a bigger name though. Where’s a young Jeff Goldblum when you need him?

Go!

Will 'The Hobbit' finally turn Martin Freeman into a stateside star?

martin-freemanImage Credit: Jon Furniss/WireImage.comGood gravy, I really hope so. As Tim on the original Office, Freeman’s flustered charms endeared him to audiences, if not his beloved Dawn. I know, I know, we all love John Krasinski very much, but Freeman pioneered the sheepish glances to the camera that make the Tim/Jim character so connected to the audience. He followed up that role with the equally smitten John, the porn stand-in, in Love Actually.

His other major role was as Arthur Dent in the 2005 adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which was sort of a dud, although Freeman continued to be Adorable British Guy, At Your Service. Currently, he’s staring as Watson in the dazzling BBC reboot of Sherlock Holmes, which airs on PBS starting this very Sunday: READ FULL STORY »

The 'Hangover' problem: Mike Tyson, okay; Mel Gibson, not okay?

gibson-tysonImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos; PRN/PR PhotosBy now, you’ve no doubt heard all about the dust-up over Mel Gibson‘s planned cameo being yanked from The Hangover 2. First it was announced that Gibson — whose career has been unquestionably challenged by tabloid headlines stemming from his nasty split from Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his 1-year-old daughter, and the subsequent leak of irate and threatening phone messages he allegedly left her — would have a cameo in Todd Phillips’ comedy sequel. Then it was revealed that after objections from some members of the film’s cast and crew, Gibson had been dropped from the film. Now, the latest beat in the story is that Zach Galifianakis may have been one of the folks ticked off by the Gibson casting stunt (reps for both Gibson and Galifianakis declined comment). All of this is juicy stuff, no doubt.

But one question many are left asking is why it was okay for convicted rapist Mike Tyson to appear in the first Hangover, but not okay for Gibson to turn up in the sequel? Were Tyson’s crimes any more acceptable than the unsavory claims Gibson faces? READ FULL STORY »

'30 Rock' and 'The Office' reference 'The Sting': Was the fix in?

the-sting-30-rockImage Credit: Everett Collection; Ali Goldstein/NBCDid you find yourself humming a few bars of Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer” this morning? Then I assume who watched NBC’s block of 30 Rock and The Office last night. Both show’s featured subplots right out of the movie The Sting — or as Michael Scott called it, The Stinger. On 30 Rock, a suddenly savvy Kenneth teamed up with Jenna and guest Kelsey Grammer to swindle Carvel out of its ice-cream fortune. It was a classic Arizona double-back. Or something. Check it out: READ FULL STORY »

jameson-rock-williamsImage Credit: David Gabber/PR Photos; Erik Kabik/PR Photos; PRPhotos.comThe stars are coming! To Broadway, that is. Quite the trio, eh? But the triple-threat of star-studded news got us here at EW wondering: Which debut is the most anticipated? Which are you most looking forward to seeing? Or, let’s put it this way: Which star do you, err, love the most? Theater smackdown! Using only the scant information about their roles provided in this post, choose your favorite Broadway debut in our handy EW poll (after the jump) — and then sound off with your thoughts in our comment section, if you’d like!
