'Glee': Dammit, 'Glee' I love you

Categories: Glee, Halloween, Television

GLEE_episode-205Although we’re only five episodes in, Glee‘s second season has stirred up quite the debate from even the most die-hard of fans thus far: To theme episode or not to theme episode? If you’re leaning towards the latter, sorry, but you’ll have to wait another week, because tonight Glee returns (did you miss it?) with the much-anticipated “The Rocky Horror Glee Show,” a New Directions take on the cult classic. Luckily, it appears that McKinley’s glee club is tackling the cult musical, which means the performances will be integrated a bit more seamlessly — and realistically — then, say, a hallucinogenic trip to the dentist. (Unless Ryan Murphy pulls a Darlton and they’re all dead.)

Does anyone want to guess as to how they got these songs past Principal Figgins and Coach Sylvester? Who are you most excited to see in their Rocky Horror roles: Kurt as Riff Raff, Finn as Brad Majors, or a shirtless (and pants-less?) Sam as Rocky? After hearing that the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter was originally intended for John Stamos, are you excited or a little let down that Mercedes will be filling Tim Curry’s shoes tonight? Fret not, Stamos lovers, because Dr. Carl is still returning to battle for Emma’s heart (Sorry Will, but Uncle Jesse can be my teddy bear any day) and will make his singing debut on tonight’s episode. Looks like Carl’s singing might have a better effect on Emma than Will’s “Thong Song,” as Emma’s “Touch-a Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me” is a sign that she’s making some progress with regards to her intimacy issues.

What say you, PopWatchers? Will “The Rocky Horror Glee Show” be the best Glee episode ever? What do you think about the idea of a full length Rocky Horror remake? And when is Puck getting out of juvie? After you watch the episode, head back here to let us know what you think.

Olivia Wilde on her MoveOn.org get-out-the-vote video

olivia-wilde-cnnbcHouse star Olivia Wilde is easily one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actresses. This summer, she shot Cowboys & Aliens with Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, and this fall, when she’s not busy promoting the December release of Disney’s Tron: Legacy, she’s shooting the body-swapping comedy The Change-Up with Ryan Reynolds and the sci-fi thriller Now (formally I’m.Mortal) with Justin Timberlake. But she still found the time and nerve to shoot a pointed and imaginative get-out-the-vote video for the liberal political action group MoveOn.org, released yesterday.

Directed by Yaniv Raz, and written by MoveOn’s Laura Dawn and Onion News Network’s Michael Pielocik, the clip casts Wilde as an activist broadcasting from a dystopian future governed by “RepubliCorp” and a war-happy President Sarah Palin — all the result of voter apathy in 2010. Specifically, your apathy; your name, friends, and photos can be incorporated into the video via Facebook, giving the clip an eerily personal message. (You can also opt out of the personalization for a more generic version of the video.) This afternoon, Wilde took a break from shooting Now (which, coincidentally, is also about a dystopian future in which people don’t age past 25) to talk with EW about why she made the video, why she’s not afraid to be political, and what she thinks of what happened to a MoveOn protestor at last night’s Kentucky senatorial debateREAD FULL STORY »

Andy Richter talks 'Conan' as test shows begin: 'We're gonna be a lot happier'

Andy-RichterImage Credit: Barry Brecheisen/WireImage.com; Art Strieber/TBSConan is coming. Today, Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter shoot the first of four test shows in preparation for their Nov. 8 premiere on TBS. Richter, currently waging an “all-out war” against his sinuses with antibiotics and Prednisone (that’s for his Twitter followers), phoned EW earlier this afternoon for a quick chat and sounded relaxed and ready to return to the late-night ring.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: We spoke near the end of the Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour, and you said you and Conan hadn’t begun discussing the TBS show. What can you tell us about it now?
ANDY RICHTER:
It’s a talk show. I’d say that between Late Night and The Tonight Show, on The Tonight Show there was a little less absurdity — humor that was kind of absurd for absurdness sake. We felt we needed to tailor the humor to an earlier hour, which basically means, you’re gonna be the same person, but now grandma’s in the room. [Laughs] That’s sort of what it was. This is probably gonna be like a mix of the two. It’s hard to say: It’s not like we have big planning meetings where we think “This is what the personality of the show is gonna be like.” We have discussions about it, but mostly they’ve been things like, “Let’s give the impression that we don’t give a s—.” [Laughs] “Let’s give the impression that we’re having fun.” Because that’s how we feel. We went through this thing, which certainly in the grand scheme of things was a tempest in a teapot, but it was a stressful thing — to get bumped off of The Tonight Show or take yourself off The Tonight Show, however you want to look at it. It was kind of a s—y thing, so we’re adjusting, and in reaction to that, we’re now feeling like, “You know what, let’s just have some fun. Let’s just do a show now that we’re not replacing anybody. We’re not replacing David Letterman. We’re not replacing Jay Leno. We’re just startin’ up a show from scratch, which we’ve never gotten to do before. There’s no precedent. There’s no shoes to fill. We just get to do what we want.” The way the show has been built hasn’t been through some grand plan about some philosophy that we’re trying to follow. We’re just thinking up bits. “We got a studio. We got a desk. We got a band. What are some funny things we can do in that space?”  READ FULL STORY »

Psychic Paul the Octopus has died; How soon can we expect a movie of his life?

octopus-named-PaulImage Credit: Roland Weihrauch/AFP/Getty ImagesThis morning I heard some very sad news that I couldn’t bring my sea creature-loving self to believe. My favorite animal of the summer, Paul the Octopus, has died at the ripe old age of 2-and-a-half. Steffan Porwoll, a manager at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany where Paul lived and made his famous predictions, said that “[Paul] appears to passed away peacefully during the night, of natural causes,” which should let all fans of Pulpo Paul find some comfort in his untimely passing. Of course, this has only proven to be excellent fodder for conspiracy theorists — and a certain filmmaker is speculating other reasons behind his death. READ FULL STORY »

Matthew Broderick joins star-packed 'Tower Heist' cast. He's back!

Categories: Ben Stiller, Casting, Movies

Matthew-BroderickImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotosAfter taking a day off from big budget comedies (actually, it was more like four years), Matthew Broderick has signed on to join Tower Heist, a robbery comedy that boasts the biggest cast this side of the Ocean’s franchise. Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Alan Alda, Gabourey Sidibe, and Téa Leoni are all on board for the Brett Ratner-directed pic about a Madoff-style swindler (Alda) targeted by a group of New Yorkers who lost their money to his scheme. Broderick will play a Wall Street-er who got cleaned out — and presumably wants revenge.

While we can’t organize a Ferris Bueller-style parade to celebrate his return, we can say this: Welcome back, Matthew! We know you’ve been plenty busy in the past few years on screens big and small, not to mention your constant devotion to the New York theater world. (Oh, and then there’s the missus and the kids.) But the multiplex has missed you. And now that you’re here again, please, don’t be a stranger.

How about you, PopWatchers: Have you been waiting for Broderick’s big screen comeback? And do you think Tower Heist sounds like the right vehicle for it?

Nike's LeBron James commercial answers the question: Would he rather be liked or feared?

Categories: Advertising, Games, Sports

Controversy sells. At least Nike thinks so. Remember how the company took advantage of Tiger Woods’ scandal with an ad that featured the voice of Woods’ dead father? The sporting-goods company has adapted a similar tact with LeBron James, who went from hero to heel overnight after abandoning the Cleveland Cavaliers for the star-studded Miami Heat. In a new commercial, the 25-year-old star repeatedly asks the audience, “What should I do?” while clearly concluding that he’s proudly his own man. He quotes Maya Angelou, hangs with Sonny Crockett, and tweaks his critics, especially former star Charles Barkley, before rhetorically asking, “Should I be who you want me to be?” Take a look: READ FULL STORY »

Jon Stewart voted most influential man

Jon-StewartImage Credit: Frank Ockenfels 3/Comedy Central Record 20867981Jon Stewart was voted the “most influential man” in a recent poll, topping Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Kanye West, who rounded out the top five. Stephen Colbert clocked in at number 11, Conan O’Brien at 12, Matt Weiner at 20, and Barack Obama came in 21st.

O…kay. I mean, I love Jon Stewart, and if this means more dudes are going to try to be politically aware, actively hilarious, and aggressively intelligent, then yay. I for one would like to see more of this influence, please!

But of course, this list isn’t really about influence: It’s about buzz. (And pageviews.) Is JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater an American hero? Of course. Is he influential? Well, only in the sense that we were all influenced to read stories about him. Everyone loves Drew “Breesus” Brees, but would he be so high on this list if he wasn’t wearing a Super Bowl ring? Probably not.

Who do you think is the most influential man, PopWatchers?

'The Walking Dead' wishes us Happy Zombie Commuter Day!

walking-dead-in-DCImage Credit: Tim Sloan/AFP Photo/Getty ImagesTo gear up for Sunday’s premiere of The Walking Dead, AMC has commissioned hundreds of zombies to roam the streets of 26 major world cities just in time for the morning commute. Starting at daybreak in Taipei and Hong Kong, the zombies will visit famous landmarks before a group of the undead  descend upon The Walking Dead premiere in Los Angeles tonight. (This bloody brain-seeker pictured was sauntering nearby the Gallery Place Metro entrance in Washington, D.C.) Looks like Halloween’s come a few days early!

Having been witness to the the last time AMC launched a city-wide promotional event, when the network sent people in period costumes to Grand Central Station in NYC to hand out Sterling Cooper business cards just before the second season premiered, I really wish I had gotten a chance to see zombies this morning. (It sure beats contending with smelly Elmo, the only costumed character I see during my morning commute.) The Walking Dead’s legendary makeup artist Greg Nicotero directed the styling and presumably taught local makeup artists how to recreate his zombie look throughout the world. (I can only imagine that these zombies will look a bit better than the other major — and very fun — zombies-roam-city-streets event, Zombiecon.) You can monitor the zombie world takeover on The Walking Dead‘s Facebook page, by following the #ZombieCommuterDay hash tag on Twitter — where you can upload photos of your very own zombie sightings — or by looking through AMC’s album of international zombie commutes (the Buenos Aires one is my favorite).

Did you see any zombies on your commute this morning, PopWatchers?
