This is pure genius, thanks!
Schulz dreamt this strip sequence up by painting Linus as naive and one major kid holiday ahead of himself. So he gave the great pumpkin all those characteristics of santa claus. As Schulz was a devout Christian, I believe this sequence is a refutation of false paganism. Just as a Charlie Brown Christmas was a refutation of the false commercialism of that Christian holiday. Also, the strip sequence is much funnier with Chuck sitting in the patch with Linus…the great pumpkin didn’t leave any toys, but he did leave a “used dog”. Good grief!
god is not dead. god is alive.
i didnt realy like it because only if there was a video of it it is only that i hate reading
As Schultz was a Catholic, I think the G-Pumpkin is symbolic of faith in general. Sally & Linus gave up all the fun of “tricks and treats and for what?!?!?” Sally asks. For the religious who give up certain temptations in their sincere attempt to follow God, is it worth it? What if there is no God? What if there is no Great Pumpkin? At the end of my life, will I have wished to have engaged in heathenism? I think the show speaks to doubts that many believers struggle with.
So – I believe in the Great Pumpkin, Linus! But sometimes it’s hard.
Okay, no one has commented on this for a month, but I just now read it and thought the article (and the Great Pumpkin – which I did DVR and watch a couple of weeks ago) were absolutely great.
I thought I was reading one of beloved Doc Jensen’s Lost analysis for goodness sake. Great comments as well especially the two theories based on Schultz being Christain/Catholic. The first few Peanuts specials made were all great for me as a kid in the 70′s. Why do have a hunger for a Dolly Madison rasberry zinger right now?
Good review, but I’m waiting for the Rewind discussion of “Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown”, thanks.
Oh really, Wouldn’t he like when Charlie Brown sticking his tongue out to Snoopy and his fantasy nonsense.
