And though the writer talks about Rosanne and how it didin’t focus on weight, it did feature them eating. A lot. Rosanne even owned a resturant at one point that featured loose meat sanwiches, basically ground hamburger sitting in pools of fat. Disgusting, and I loved them. I’m from the midwest and I ate like these characters. Unlike most tv shows that might show say Josy on Friends eating like a glutton yet still staying fairly slim and sexy, rosannne show overweight people who were normal, yet they basically had dietary problems. Most overweight people aren’t gluttons, they just can’t follow a more balenced diet. I know, I was very overweight. I finally got myself in shapeand have kept it off for ten years. I still eat like my midwestern roots sometimes, but I have to balance that with healthier foods. I also exercise quite a bit. I’m probably in better shape now at fifty than I was at 25. Well, no probably about it. But you know what? I’m probably gonna get a lot of flack for this, but one thing that helped me lose weight is the fat jokes and society’s disdain. Most of my family including aunts, uncles, cousins etc, were always calling each other fatass and other names. I was an athlete in high school and went into the military, but in my mid-twenties, I started to put on weight. I think a lot of my reklatives were pleased that I was becoming heavier. I think when I was slimmer, I reminded them of what they could be if they tried. Then I gained weight, I was part of the bunch. Now I’m slim again and while they are not so rude to me, I think part of that is I live a few states away, and that’s more due to the fact that I’m not around. My experience has been that most fat people are self hating(I know I was) and will direct their anger at themselves by oveereating and others by their comments. I know many many goiod people who are overweight, mostly very nice good people. But the one thing about fat people is this, they can do something about it. Unlike other groups that fat people want to compare themselves to(blacks, hispanics, gays) fat people can change themselves. I’m not saying they should, that’s up to them. But if you are extremely overweight then you’re gonna have to expect to have health issues and some are gonna make jokes. So you have to either have thick skin(sorry) or do something about it.
Interesting comments. My weight has gone up and down over the years as well, and I can relate to a lot of what you said. However, none of it is any justification for spewing hatred, which was the point of the article.
You know what’s comical?
Maura Kelly talks about how heavy people gross her out and Miserable Maura’s reptilian blog post really says a MOUTHFUL (of course, its a mouthful of puke and poison but I digress…)
Soon, she’ll be eating her words and I can’t fancy the meal making her any more pretty.
In fact, Maura Kelly’s words are going to gain her a lot of weight in the public eye, none of it is going to be good and now its the public’s turn to be disgusted, turned off and grossed out when she walks across a room.
I love the show, Mike & Molly. It’s about real people – people I wouldn’t mind hanging out with. I’m so sick of some of these TV shows that don’t depict real life but some Hollywood version of real life.
Mike and Molly has snappy lines with great characters – lovable characters – real people. I have not been this captivated by a TV show in YEARS!!!
I like how he said going about their lives but knowing their issues. That’s what it’s about. I am way overweight and on weight watchers I have been struggling with my weight forever. It’s my issue and I am well aware of it. I have to walk outside to lose weight don’t I? So people saying whatever fat people do is disgusting is in itself DISGUSTING and makes me feel even more self conscious which is what stemmed my over eating in the first place!
This Marie Claire blogger…and the other dweebs in charge over there…are fools. I agree with boycotting their stupid rag. I, too, hope she gains weight and feels for herself the prejudice and scorn she has heaped upon others.
I just have to say it again:
Melissa McCarthy is gorgeous. You can walk across my floor anytime and guaranteed, I’m tuned in and turned on.
And I have both seasons of Samantha Who on dvd too — Christina Applegate and Melissa McCarthy are just hot.
Well I have just cancelled my subscription to this magazine as well as my friends and family after I forwarded them this artical. I am happy to see many others have done the same. In the future I would hope the editor will re-think what some writers post.
Just addressing what people are saying about why would Marie Claire (Clare? I forget) do this. When I was younger and read these kinds of magazines, I always thought that Cosmo was the cool, fun, sexy one. Glamour was the one I would read for actual fashion and beauty tips, and they seemed more mature with their focus on career and social issues. I would buy Allure just for the beauty tips, it was so good. InStyle was not as big back then. And Marie Claire was just…ugh. Never bought it. It was the Teen magazine of young women’s magazines (Glamour was the Seventeen, and Cosmo was the YM. This was before all the young women mags started their own teen versions). A lot of my girlfriends felt the same way. Anyway, I wonder if they’re just desparate for attention. I can’t imgaine they have gotten much better in the last 15 years. I thought about going to their site to check this story out for myself, but didn’t want to buy into what I suspect is a publicity stunt.
This show and the actors are funny, I’m happy to hear this show is the No.1 New Comedy of this season. Well deserved!
MC and haters, go to hell.
Dear Creator of Mike & Molly,
God Bless you. It great to see a show with such great real actors. The world needs to see a show that show fat people are loved too and have lives like everyone else. I am a 300 plus woman who met my boyfriend on line and he loves me for me. Everyday he makes me feel loved and as a man he hates most sitcoms but loves this show. He says more men need to realize that big woman have more love and compassion and fun than skinny woman and to be proud to walk with a big woman on your arm.
This show shows many real insecurity issues men and woman have and how they solve them. Thanks for a real life show for once. Your the Best.
I was looking forward to seeing this show because of the premise and I usually don’t watch network tv. I have been so disappointed because of all the bedroom and sexual references. The last show where the elder woman claiming to be a Christian lady started referring to their weekend sexual exploits as God’s blessings was pretty surprising. Why can’t they just be dating and having a relationship without focusing on the sex outside of marriage. It seems all the jokes center around that. I thought this show had a lot of potential, but not now.
i think this is a great show with or without the weight thing going on the characters and actors are a great pick of people that fit right in with the show
It is my new favorite show, I have watched some episodes multiple
times. Really sweet, funny, cute, and The writing and the stars delivery are unbelievably wonderful, keep it up. Reminds me of a modern day Honeymooners.
WHo else here can’t stand the mom and the sister on the show! I really like the rest but those two drive me crazy they don’t fit and are terrible actors.
it’s amazing how bad it is this serious, let the police as people with pesonal problems and maturity, such as the Molly that if they do have ode to obesity as if it were a good thing when in reality it is a disease , plus nobody can tell an obese person is happy in that condition. The plot is fata, also major players. Anyway …
