Stephen Colbert storms off 'The View'

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Colbert-the-viewStephen Colbert jokingly stormed off The View today in mock tribute to Bill “Papa Bear” O’Reilly. Why was everyone, especially Barbara, so flustered? The View ladies were as humorless as a 15-term congressman. Has no one ever seen The Colbert Report? Just play along, women of The View and Maria Shriver! Just play along.

Are you attending the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, PopWatchers?

What on Earth are you talking about? Flustered? Didn’t play along? I didn’t see any of that.

    • Travis

I didn’t either… It definitely seemed that they were all laughing.

    • mary q contrary

I think she might be referring to Whoopi and Barbara’s upside-down smiles during the jokes that came before him storming off.

    • BFD

Margaret Lyons really needs to understand who’s the straight man in a visual joke. Clearly her humor button is in the off position.

    • Jara

Something is seriously wrong here. The women all were clearly laughing. Just because they are middle aged non-hipsters doesn’t mean they have no sense of humor and you’re attempts to pretend otherwise make you look bad.

      • Greg

I think it’s fair to say Barbara didn’t get the joke after she said Colbert wasn’t fascinating and “made no sense.” None of them had ever watched the show. Actually, Hassleback seemed to get it, although she also walked into a fear mongering joke aimed at her party, but at least she seemed to get it.

      • Mike

She’s a dinosaur who doesn’t understand the quick humor of tday.

    • Rush

Isn’t this show called “The Vagina”?

  • andy

It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that these woman didn’t get his humour.

    • Tarc

Too bad they obviously did. Did You even bother to watch the clip? Idiot.

      • go to skool

LAWL!!1 He didn’t even spell “humor” right, what an idiot1!1one!!

      • Anonymous

        @ go to skool

I hope you are being facetious. ‘Humour’ is the British/Canadian spelling.

      • Pan

@Anonymous, do you really think that American’s care how other countries spell words? I’m Canadian-American and even my TEACHERS in high school would take points off my exams because I would spell color as ‘colour’. Ethnocentrism is the American way.

      • onestell

@Pan … “Ethnocentrism is the American way” … Are you kidding me?? This is a United States based web site for a United States based magazine! (And for the record, I’m an immigrant)

      • Gazza

onestall: I’m in Australia, and I regularly visit the ew website; I can even get physical copies of EW here. The reason I read EW is because it contains new about ALL the TV shows I watch here- American shows. Sure, we have Australian shows too, but are far outnumbered. Heck, the physical copies I mentioned earlier? I can get them from BORDERS. Just down the road from STARBUCKS, opposite TARGET.

Do you even know what “enthnocentrism” means?

      • Gazza

        *”Ethnocentrism”

  • Jennifer

Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say he was mocking Whoopi and Joy since they were the morons who stormed off like spoiled toddlers?

    • Hi

      YES

    • blaaaake!

why don’t you read first, Jennifer? I know it’s hard but try it at least just once.. it says “in mocking tribute” not mocking O’Reilly, mocking what happened when O’Reilly was there.. but of course, your dumb, neo-conservative walnut sized brain won’t let you actually understand what’s going on.. why are conservatives/republicans so stupid?

      • waitwhat

Whoa, blaaaake! Don’t sugarcoat it! Guess the meds have worn off…

      • Benelli

Hey Blaaaake!….It must make you feel soooo cool to insult others for no reason- when all you did was make yourself look like an insecure and shallow loser. Congratulations- it sure worked. I wouldn’t respect anything coming out of your mouth.

      • mike

steve what going on? are you lowering your standards and joining jon in a merger type protest?

      • Jack Awesome

Somebody takes a message board a little TOO seriously…

      • THANK YOU.

      • jann

It would take a walnut sized brain to recognize another one.

      • rach

you read it wrong too buddy- how clever of you to insult others!!! I quote from the article-Stephen Colbert jokingly stormed off The View today in mock tribute to Bill “Papa Bear” O’Reilly. Why was everyone, especially Barbara, so flustered?

SO i think Jennifer was kinda correct in her reading- your kinda a jerk

      • Jon

Hey Blaaaake you set a good example to make liberals sound semi-sane

      • Tarc

        Another typical liberal nut-job.

      • blaaaake!

I guess I hit a nerve.. the knuckle dragging repugs came out in droves to defend another one of their own.. much like they defend Sarah “I can’t think of a founding father, I can’t think of a newspaper or magazine I read, I can see russia from my house” Palin, or that anti-masturbation ex-witch who says there’s no such thing as separation of church and state in the constitution, or — I guess you thought you had the market cornered in hurling insults, huh? The best part of all this… your ignorance and mediocrity keeps me constantly laughing and thoroughly entertained. so, answer back.. hurl some more comments.. I need a good laugh.;)

    • Tarc

No one that walks away from Bill O’Reilly (the legions) in disgust should be anything but lauded and cheered.

  • Katja

Oh my god I love him. And that Congressional testimony is a goldmine for entertainment because one of the political ads running in West Virginia right now actually includes mention of Colbert’s testimony as a way of attacking the Democratic candidate…and it makes me laugh whenever I see it because that’s so absurd.

  • leah

I love Stephen!! He is so funny – even funnier is that the girls didn’t know what to say

  • Jason

Uhh – they were laughing. Drumming up drama for nothing.

And yes, I am attending the rally – already have my hotel booked!

    • Jenn

Hey Jason, are you there to restore sanity or fear? :) Have fun!

  • dee

Margaret Lyons is a d0uche!! What the heck is the writer talking about they were “flustered.”

    • jp

      I know, right?
      They were fine! jeesh.

    • Tank Girl

Lyons is the same writer who thinks Don Draper and Dr. Faye Miller belong together. In otherwords, she’s utterly clueless.

  • Zakry

Um, yeah guys, they were laughing and smiling! Humorless? WTF does Margaret Lyons THINK they should have done???

And here’s a thought – watch the clip before you comment. It makes you look less… dim.

  • Teresa

Maybe this clip doesn’t show enough? I didn’t see any fluster, either. Sherri was laughing when Stephen stormed off and the audience was in hysterics.

  • ks

    GO Stephen :)

  • mike

jon are you lowering your standards by merging your protest with steve?

  • tia

By the time he walked off they were playing along, but when he first started joking about it you could definitely see the tension. Particularly with Barbara and Whoopie. He kept it light though and they soon warmed to it. It wasn’t a big deal at all.

    • Marc

I’ve been reading through the comments, and having seen the whole segment for myself, I’d say ‘tia’ nailed it. Yes, Barbara and (surprisingly) Whoopi were standoff-ish at first, but he eventually won them over, mainly by opening up about himself and dialing down the jokes. Guess the O’Reilly debacle still gets under Babs’ skin; she seems perfectly at ease with out-sized personalities like Russell Brand yet couldn’t find the humour in Colbert’s dry wit. Her loss.

      • Donny

TBH, I don’t think she gets Russell Brand at all either. Every word he says, joking and otherwise, seems to fly clear over her head.

Babs was either born without a sense of humor or had it surgically removed at some point in her life.

    • Katja

Agreed. They laughed when he stormed off, but they were not picking up on the jokes before then. (Barbara Walters, how can you think it doesn’t make sense to suggest that the people who aren’t afraid of snakes don’t reproduce? It’s called natural selection and it’s a pretty hot topic.)

    • erin

I think Barbara wants the whole story to go away, and had her panties in a bunch because he was bringing it up again (hilariously). Sorry to break it to you, Babs, but silly episodes like that are the only reason anyone talks about your lame-a$$ show. It’s certainly not for the riveting discussions.

  • harry

    EPIC!!!!

  • dctoronto

Sherri and (to her credit) Elizabeth laughed. I think there must be some Rosie level tension between Barbara and Whoppi at the moment. Probably why the couldn’t laugh.

  • ashley

yeah, whoopi and babs didn’t like his SPOT ON jokes. silly.
