Image Credit: Everett Collection; Inset: PR PhotosWe still have to wait an entire week for Glee‘s much-blogged about Rocky Horror Picture Show episode, and considering the buzz surrounding the Gleeks take on the cult classic, it’s not surprising that there is now some interest in pursuing a feature-length remake. Deadline is reporting that Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy has met with Fox 2000 to discuss an updated version of Jim Sharman’s 1975 Frankenstein romp, which originally starred Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick.
Murphy is known for writing and directing some of Glee‘s flashier, more elaborate episodes (like last season’s “The Power of Madonna” and the recent “Britney/Brittany.”) To date, his feature-length directorial credits include Running With Scissors (2006) and this summer’s Eat Pray Love. Both were memoir adaptations, and both received lukewarm response from critics (EW’s Lisa Schwarzbaum gave Eat Pray Love a C+), but Murphy’s musical touch could be the perfect fit for a Rocky Horror reboot. What do you think, PopWatchers? I’m always up for musicals, but does Rocky Horror need to be redone, or is it better left as is? Given Murphy’s success with Glee (and depending on how well next week’s episode is received), do you think he’s the right choice to do the Time Warp again? Does this just make you more excited for a new episode of Glee?

Oh, for Pete’s sake, just leave well enough alone.
I wouldn’t actually mind it, if they could really do it right. My biggest concern would be with Murphy getting slap-happy and hiring too many of his Glee kids.
They never know when to leave well enough alone. The original is perfect. A remake would never work.
Amen, sister.
I can’t believe this is even a thought in someone’s head. I’m not even a huge fan of “Rocky Horror” but there is NO WAY a remake could possibly work. NO WAY. But, I guess the creator of an overrated show that does bad covers of hit songs wouldn’t understand that.
Have to agree. Rocky Horror is fine as it is. Leave it be.
The original is trashy, campy, stupid, awful … and a helluva great time and film! Tim Curry in a teddy with bright red lips with a black outline? And Susan Sarandon in Toucha toucha toucha me? Meatloaf on a motorcycle getting murdered with a mining pick … I love Glee, but dude, you gotta stop it.
No one can top Tim Curry as Frank. But the sequel would be awesome. Return of the Queen. Just make sure Tim O’Brien is involved.
Sorry, Richard O’Brien.
I know I’m nitpicking, but Richard O’Brien did Rocky. Tim O’Brien wrote “The Things They Carried.”
No remake for Rocky, but do remake Shock Treatment.
Agree Sheli!!
This would only work if they Marilyn Manson lost his chub flub and was cast as Frank – N – Furter. Even Richard O’Brien doesn’t want this move remade! WTF?!!?
There is no equal for Tim Curry as Frank. But I’m looking forward to the episode.
Can anyone tell me who is playing Frank?! I’m starting to get a little worried!
I think people have been saying that Mercedes is playing Frank.
I think The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of those classic movies that SHOULD NOT be remade. No matter who’s starring in it, nobody can even come close to playing Frank-N-Furter as AMAZINGLY as Tim Curry did.
I’m usually perfectly fine with remakes, even for beloved films, but this is something I just don’t think could be duplicated.
Agreed! There are plenty of other musicals he could adapt for the big screen instead of remaking a classic.
Guys, there’s no more sacred cows in Hollywood. PSYCHO was remade, The Honeymooners was remade,Sabrina was remade, Texas Chainsaw Massacre was remade. I mean…I would not be surprised if someone decided to remake Casablanca or Citizen Kane next.
Please just let this be a rumor that never comes true. Please!
In my opinion, he defecated on one of the best memoirs ever written when he adapted it for the screen. This is the worst possible name that could possibly be attached to a remake of a cult classic. Murphy should stick to furthering gay stigmas and stereotypes, he really does an AMAZING job at building the wall I have to climb a mile higher.
I have often wondered whether it was just me who thought Glee was more damaging than helpful regarding gay stigmas
Nope. Not just you. Fortunately I stopped caring about that wall and just work sleep work sleep.
let me guess, you and (?) are both “straight acting” gays who get irrationaly uncomfortable when approached by some effeminate gay guys because they’re “too gay”. Is that correct?
It’s gays like you that make it more difficult for others who aren’t concerned to catering to the straight community or trying to assimilate and pretend to be something we’re not. Let others be who they are and if it doesn’t jive with you, so be it.. life your life the way you want to but don’t look down your nose at others who have more courage to be who they really are instead of pretending to be something they’re not.
Wrong on all accounts Blaaake, but thanks for playing. Maybe you shouldnt make wild assumptions about people you dont know. I was voicing my opinion, which as you said, everyone is free to do.
well MCS, then I guess I stand corrected.. you’re not a self loathing gay, you’re just a bigoted homophobe.
Now let’s see what (?), the self loathing gay, has to say.
Do you really have nothing to do than make personal judgements here all day?
Maybe tomorrow you can speculate that I’m a post-op transexual with buyers remorse. Seriously, you have no clue.
This is too funny MCS! I’m married with children and very secure with my lifestyle and I’m so thankful someone else agrees with me! Regardless, if the studio is serious about remaking it, I hope they can look through Murphy’s gas and attach some true grit names like: Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry), JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) or even someone as obvious as Tim Burton. I have a feeling the troll queen is going to get off his throne around 10:30 tomorrow morning. I just want her to read one thing: GOOD MORNING blaaaaake! What ugly things do you have to say today? You seem so angry? Forget about all the hate in your heart, I want you to know that… “it gets better”.
How could they even think of remaking Rocky Horror, it is such a classic it needs to be left alone for the masses to continue to enjoy it
P.S. The memoir I was referring to was ‘Running With Scissors’. I just caught that.
I can’t think of any remake that was really worked or improved on the original. Bad idea.
The remake of The Italian Job was better than the original.
Let Me In is being touted by many as better than the original. I think the new Wonka is better than the original.
that last sentence negates your opinion. new wonka is horrific.
I think the old Oompa Loompas were way more horrifying than anything in the new version.
As much as I enjoy Glee and I’m looking forward to the Rocky Horror episode, it isn’t a movie that should be remade. It is a classic because it is just fine as is. It shouldn’t be remade. That would be like saying that Gone With the Wind or The Sound of Music was going to be redone. :/
ITA.
It’s also sort of a product of its time. Back then they were still sort of going through the sexual revolution. Right now, anything done like that would be considered tame to what kids and adults are used to.
Oh god no. I really hope this is just a rumor. Remakes in general are a bad idea, but to redo RHPS is just… incomprehensibly horrendous. It wouldn’t even make money. The original fans won’t see it, and it would be to “weird” for anyone else. There is a reason it’s a cult classic.
I’m looking forward to the Glee ep, but I do not think Rocky Horror should be remade. A remake will never be able to compare to the original. Plus, I don’t have all that much faith in RM. The Madonna and Britney episodes are my least favorite of both seasons so far.
No. Just… no.
NO NO NO! Tributes are one thing; an extremely unnecessary remake is another. No one can replace the original.
Exactly! I can’t wait for the Glee tribute episode and have had “Time Warp” stuck in my head since the preview but a remake is WRONG WRONG WRONG!
just think, in the future somebody will be remaking GLEE and it will suck too
Ew, no. As someone above said, there’s a reason it’s a cult classic. And you really can’t take a cult classic and remake it successfully, because that’s trying to take the “cult” out of the movie, and no one’s going to go for that. They just can’t bottle the same completely bizarre, utterly unique magic a second time. I’m not even the biggest Rocky Horror fan, but I think a remake is a really terrible idea.
Even the original Rocky Horror people tried to capitalize on the original movie by making “Denton, USA” as a sequel, and it failed miserably. So no way can people who are in no way related to the original come up with a great “remake.” Makes me shudder just thinking of it.
