Image Credit: Joe Viles/FoxABC just announced that when the current season of Dancing With the Stars tangos off the stage, it will be replaced with a six-episode run of Skating With the Stars. Because what’s funnier then questionably coordinated B-listers in sequins? Questionably coordinated B-listers in sequins … on ice.
As soon as I heard about this edition, my mind flew back to that Fox show Skating With Celebrities from 2006 (pictured here) that found stars like Kristy Swanson, Bruce Jenner, and Todd Fields stumbling and bumbling with actual figure skaters like Nancy Kerrigan and Lloyd Eisler in a pairs competition. (Kristy Swanson and Lloyd Eisler ended up winning. And then hooking up. The pair are now married.) It was similar to Dancing, in that so much seemed to depend on how physically adept the star was. But on Skating, it seemed like female celebrities had an immediate advantage, because at least the professional men had impressive-looking lifts to fall back on, even if the star was a subpar skater. There was only so much the professional ladies could do with their mediocre male stars. I wonder how ABC’s version will deal with that? And which stars do you want to see strap the skates on? (The cast will be revealed on Nov. 2.) I nominate Moira Kelly!

You should check out a Canadian show called Battle of the Blades – it pairs up professional female skaters with former NHL players. Much better than some random celebrities who probably haven’t skated much before.
THAT WOULD DEFINATELY BE WORTH SEEING. HOW DO WE GET IT?
just youtube the couples…the routines get posted pretty quickly. It airs on Sundays.
Battle of the Blades is awesome! Sunday nights on CBC, check it out!
That makes sense for Canada because hockey’s huge there so NHL players tend to be pretty well known. I don’t know if they could pull decent ratings here in the US.
Yeah, Battle of the Blades is a pretty good show, and I think it’s the number one show in Canada, even more highly-rated than Hollywood shows. From what I’ve heard it will be exported to many countries in Europe where Hockey is also huge, but I’m not sure about the US. I like it a heck of a lot better than I liked Skating with Celebrities.
ummm, no, it isn’t anywhere close to being the #1 show up here.
I spent the evening watching several BotB videos, and now wish that I could see the show in its entirety, rather than disjointed segments. Tell me that Jamie Sale and Craig Simpson won season 1, because they were my favorites.
That’s not the cast for “Skating With The Stars.” That’s the cast for the FOX version of “Skating With Celebrities” four years ago…read the article, please.
GOD AWFUL!
Yessss the return of Popwatch on Ice.
Wasn’t there already some skating show a few years back and bombed horribly?
It was awful. It’s one thing to fake dancing, it’s quite another to fake ice dancing.
I agree with seb. The Canadian show called Battle of the Blades is truly remarkable.
Being a hockey fan, it is great how graceful the hockey players are with their professional partners.
Oh sweet Jesus.
Kill me now.
LOL: No one cares about your crap.
I’ll only watch this if Jon Zimmerman is on it. Otherwise… no.
Exactly what I was thinking.
OK, I want to see Lindsey Lohan, Heather Locklear, Lisa Kudrow, Steve Zahn, Matt LeBlanc and Nick Simmons as contestants.
Steve Zahn would be hilarious, considering he played Phoebe’s ice dancer husband on Friends.
i don’t care about the show but i would like to see anyone doing a triple, double double triple and a 360 and landing on there asses that would be funny and nuts if some one doit for real.
and a 1080 and a 69 when they are skating.
The British version is actually high-rated. Dancing with the Stars comes from Britain. Big Brother and The Apprentice have global versions. Reality TV hits, whether they originated in America or abroad, are and remain a global phenomenon.
Well Larry I declared it the minute I read your post.
I’d much rather watch “Battle of the Blades.” It rocks and the NHL stars are skating for charity so they really put their all into to. This American version sounds so cheesy. The last show was a flop and I predict this one with D listers will be too.
I love reality TV talent competitions, but for some instinctive reason, I dread this.
Guess I won’t be watching SWTS. Think it’s going to be ABC epic failure.
Moira Kelly….I like what you did there!
TOE PICK!
What about DB Sweeney? (or is that DW Moffat? I always get those two mixed up)
It was D.B. Sweeney–D.W. Moffet is Joe McCoy on Friday Night Lights.
DB Sweeney is busy doing The Event right now… but I totally second the Moira Kelly nomination! (And for that matter… what’s Christy Carlson Romano doing these days?)
