EW Reunions: Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson go 'Back to the Future'

It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) first leaped into that plutonium-powered DeLorean and time-traveled back to 1955. But on this rainy October day in New York City, Fox and his Back to the Future costar Lea Thompson, who played Marty’s mother, Lorraine, act like no time has passed, warmly posing with each other alongside a replica of the iconic car. “Being with the car is great — it’s more fun being with Lea,” says Fox, 49, who will return to TV Nov. 9 in a guest spot on The Good Wife. “I just remember all these things with the car — smashing my head on the door, hitting my knee on the flux capacitor.” Adds Thompson, “It’s a thrill for me because I didn’t actually get to shoot in the car. I kinda saw it in the background. I’m a little bitter! It’s great to see Michael. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years.” The 49-year-old actress, who co-stars in the upcoming film The Convincer with Greg Kinnear, joined her former big-screen son for an emotional chat about Back to the Future’s lasting appeal.

So awesome seeing Fox next to the Delorean again.

Should have been Marty & Doc. No one cares about the Mom Character.

      • Mike

I had the biggest crush on Lea Thompson because of that movie despite the fact she hits on her son. Forget “had a crush”, I still have a crush.

Agree that Christopher Lloyd should be there, though.

        Lea Thompson is hott!

      • Seddie Forever!!!!!!!!!

J – She was better in “Some Kind Of Wonderful” as Keith’s love interest, she was the opposite of Watts BUT they did not do the cliche thing of making her vain or stuckup thus making Watts look better by comparison

Supposedly Christopher Lloyd hates doing anything to do publicity wise regarding BTTF. He did turn up in a video with the DeLorean back then but insisted everyone keep their hands off the car!!

      • Tom

        Speak for yourself.

  • Chris

Seems too soon for a LOTR reunion.

  • Mr. Holloway

Is Crispin Glover in the house? Or was it not his density to appear in this issue?

    • Alia

      Heehee. Thanks, Mr. H. :-)

    • JFWilder

Crispin got all attitude, wierd, and demanding of money, and was replaced in BTTF 2…that was NOT Crispin hanging upside down in BTTF 2.

      • Mr. Holloway

Oh I’m aware of that. But Glover is such a wild card, I don’t think it’s impossible that he just forgot he did all that stuff and agreed to appear for a reunion.

      • BP

Not to mention it was the actor who played BIFF doing the voice. Tom Wilson actually can do Crispin better than Biff now.

      • Leann

Crispin didn’t get ‘all attiude’ actually, that’s an urban myth and it’s load of crap! Bob Gale spread nasty rumours that he was greedy, when all he asked for was the same amount that the others, such as Lea Thompson and Thomas F Wilson was getting and they offered him less. He had every right to get that money. Bob Gale said he asked for more than Michael J Fox, but as I say that’s a load of vicious lies. Read Crispin’s side of the story it can be easily googled.

i wonder how many people thought you shouldn’t have relied on spell check for destiny/density – did everyone get it ya think?

      • KC

Anyone who didn’t get it is not a true fan. I think I know every line in those movies. Ah, good times :)

    • RMW

      She’s definitely foxy.

    • wow

Wow, seriously! I was blown away. She’s still gorgeous!

    • the realist

I had the biggest crush on Lea back in the 80s and after all these years, she still looks as hot as ever!

    • 4815162342

      No way she’s 49!

    • aleksa

I’d be happy to look like that at 49 (!?!).

  • GS

I feel old as dirt now. I love the BTTF movies and was in high school when they came out! Can’t wait for this issue!

    • raerae339

I know, I remember going to the theater to see this like four times :)

  • Lorie

I am SO buying this issue!

  • gigi

WOW! Leah Thompson and MJF are 49! (and look fabulous btw…) I’m officially old and this movie is officially a classic.

  • Joel

Man, SO weird seeing the two of them like that. Really hard to believe they’re the same age. I look at them and I still think of them as mother/son. WEIRD!

  • Lori

Love them both. The movie will live forever in classic 80s pop culture.

  • Ian

Although I’ve never really cared for the sequels, the first film is one of my favorites, and one of the few films that, no matter how much I’ve seen (and that’s a lot), whenever it’s on I’ll stop what I’m doing and watch. Can’t wait for the 23rd, when the AMC Theaters by me is showing this (Never had the opportunity to see it in theaters, considering I was born 7 years after this first came out).

    • WTF?

You should wait until the 25th to see it: that’s the date in the movie when Marty travels back in time. Corny, I know, but that’s what I would do!

  • melanie

I watched this movie countless times, it’s still one of my favorites. Great seeing the two of them together. Thanks.

  • maxwell19596

Having just sat through the BTTF trilogy recently, I am thrilled to see there is still buzz about one of the greatest film franchise’s of all time. I had a great idea since MJ Fox can’t lead a film due to his disease, why not do a Zemeckis animated film, like his last two or three. Look how good the Scrooge movie looked improving on how great the Beowulf movie looked. He’s currently doing the Yellow Submarine movie (boy I can’t wait.), and how great would it be to do a new Back To the Future film. With the computer animation, they could really go hog wild with the future. Well It’s good to have dreams…sigh

  • Mad Man

Lea Thompson looks fantastic! I know it wasn’t a great movie, but she was also great in Casual Sex.
