Congratulations, Internet: Another trivial triumph! Thanks to an apparent outcry from what CNN is calling “the Internet’s logo snobs,” the Gap has yanked its new logo in favor of its regular old one. And Malcolm Gladwell said the Internet couldn’t change anything.
I get it. People hated the new logo. The little blue box just looked like dozens of other logos, we’re all sans-serifed out, etc. But where is the Internet outcry about stirrup leggings? Or the lack of pockets on a jacket that should clearly have pockets? When will someone speak up about the terrifying reemergence of clogs?! Get your priorities in order, Internet. Those clogs are easily 900 times worse than that logo.
Settle it once and for all, PopWatchers: New logo or old?

Well, I do think the old logo is due for a refresh…but not into something that looks like a tag from an airline that’s still stuck on your wheelie bag from 10 years ago. Helvetica, GAP, really? It’s a utilitarian typeface that even has it’s own documentary but it’s not fashion-forward. Or are you saying you’re dependable and strong and everywhere…oh, I get it.
At least they are not using Comic Sans. And yes, I do know my fonts/typefaces…sad but true that I have my favorites.
Haha, funny blogpost Margaret. That was a really ugly new logo though. However I’m surprised at the huge uproar and that Gap actually went back to the old logo everyone knew and loved.
The one internet uproar I can’t get behind is the Sun Chips bags. They actually changed them from NON-Compostable because people complained they were too loud? Come on! I guess no one cares about the earth.
Lol, I totally agree. Sun Chips changing bags just because of some stupid facebook groups is the worst thing I’ve heard. While Gap’s new logo really didn’t affect anybody, SC’s decision hurts the environment!
Agreed! Sorry being earth-friendly doesn’t allow you to sneak chips at night… Maybe they were killing two birds with one stone!
Concur. The Sun Chip bag thing p*sses me off.
I can’t believe they went back from compostable either, but those bags were absurdly loud. Compostable plastic does not need to be so loud!
Sun chip bags are loud! Have you heard them? You can hear someone open them from a mile away!
Yes I have heard them. They are loud. But I’m willing to have a loud chip bag (big frickin deal) in order to help out the planet a little bit at a time.
Overpopulation will hurt the Earth more than Sun Chip bags – lookin’ at you Kate Gosselin.
totally agree. sun chips should have kept those biodegradable bags. in the long run, the earth will be much better off. sometimes humans are so selfish. p*sses me off.
I had heard something about an uproar over the Gap logo but, frankly, didn’t care enough to look any further into it. Now that I see the two side by side, I say WHAAAAAAAT!! I LOVE the newer version. (ok, “love” is a strong word. Prefer.) I totally would have gotten on a bandwagon, grass roots movement to push it through. (if the movement only called for me to click a box on a website.)
Uhhmmm, I like clogs, they are comfy and the perfect shoe to go clothes shopping in, easy on and off. Now crocs, those I have and issue with anyone over 5 wearing, and the denim jean man short, awful. They never look good and they are usually paired with a wife beater, worst look ever.
Old logo
Amen on stirrup leggings – why oh why did they have to come back. And even more shocking – how much they charge for them!
Old… FAR superior than that weird new mess they tried to pass off as a logo.
Yeah, the new logo looks like it belongs in an 80′s BMW commercial.
If only they could do that to the new DNC logo…a circle with a D in it…somebody in the art department there needs to be canned.
Old logo. If they had gradually transitioned from the old to the new, with a blue box with sans serif type to start, no one would’ve complained.
Gap shouldn’t have asked. Just make a decision. It doesn’t take a marketing genius to know that you won’t please everyone all the time. Ironically, now I AM disappointed with the company. Not for the updated logo, but for the poor business sense they used in going about it.
Actually they didn’t ask anyone’s opinion. They just switched the logo without telling anyone and then there was a sudden internet uproar.
old… why would they change it anyway? And how much did they pay the dummies who came up with such a lame new logo?
The “new” logo looks like a computer company. Not a clothing retailer.
It looks like some generic Microsoft clip art. And I don’t get the point to the random blue square, like that adds anything distinctive.
Who cares, why am I seeing this article everywhere I look, this is not news.
Then you are on the wrong website.
I just want to know how many $millions were spent on designing a logo that uses a font one could find in any standard font library overlayed on top of a blue box. oh wait, the box has a gradient… i take it all back!
Old logo victory! The new logo was hideous, if you want to change it fine, but that was the best they could come up with?
