Image Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesThe American Film Institute has announced that Morgan Freeman will receive the 39th AFI Life Achievement Award at a June gala taped for broadcast later in 2011. “Morgan Freeman is an American treasure,” Sir Howard Stringer, chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said in a release. “Across decades, whether playing a prisoner, a president or God, he embodies a calm authority that demands respect for the character and for the art form. His gifts to the cultural record are also underscored by his unmistakable voice that echoes through the hearts and minds of movie lovers around the world.” That is true. Which is why we’re starting this petition to have Morgan Freeman narrate at least one of the montages that will be shown that evening. Sign it below.
As a thank you, we have once again embedded “The Full Shawshank Experience” clip from Cougar Town below. Still funny.

Such a talented actor. Yes, he should narrate at least some of his montage, if not all of it.
I can understand the reason why people want him to narrate his own montage. The man has one of those best voices ever!
This is a big honor and I think he should be able to sit back and enjoy having other great voices narrate his work.
No one can beat Morgan Freeman’s voice!
1) Where is the petition link?
2) Not only should Morgan narrate one of several/part of of his own montage, I would love to hear Samuel L. Jackson narrate one as well…and James Earl Jones. If AFI is going for the most well-known voices, why not do it right and get all three of them to narrate a portion on Morgan’s night? It would be the first time I ever watch a ceremony if they make this happen lol
Maybe James Earl Jones would narrate for him.
It’s too easy. I’d get a cluster of actors, including Clint Eastwood, Michael Caine, and Ben Affleck.
Absolutely! He could narrate the phone book and be wonderful!! Congratulations Morgan Freeman!!
I’m in support of the idea, but I think it would show a bias towards him. The question is if that’s a bad thing.
I love Morgan Freeman. He’s a fantastic actor and he does have a great voice. But narrating your own achievements for a montage? I’m sorry but that is completely egotistical, no matter how awesome your voice sounds. It’s going to make it seem like he’s giving himself the award. I doubt he would ever actually do that because I don’t see him as being that self-centered.
Congratulations to Mr. Freeman! Well deserved. Perhaps he might consider a montage on his Shannon sailboat taking us all for sail and speaking on whatever moves him !!
