For me at least it has nothing to do with being offended. What is has to do is with Hollywood still feeling they can get away with homophobic comments.
They’ve learned to be smarter about using derogatory comments about women and racial groups (read blacks) but they contiuously use the the F and other realted words to either get a cheap laugh or put someone down.
When I was coming out in the early 80′s and feeling really isolated with no gay role models and few straight people saying it was ok to be gay, I paid close attention to popular culture to see where I could fit in. The overwhelming majority of music or movies that i was exposed to that made fun of gays made me think that I was not ever going to be accepted. This just added to the isolation I felt. This lead to depression which I still fight over 20 years later. For others it leads to more drastic measures.
I wonder how many Homosexuals know their so called Lifestyle choice was considered a mental disorder?
It wasn’t until The American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its diagnostic list of mental disorders in 1973 that they got a clean bill of health. And even then many critics still think they suffer from a personal and emotional oversensitivity.
This movie trailer is a perfect example.
All types of lifestyles are made fun of in media and film. Get over it!
honestly, who cares? everyone is so hypersensitive to anything that may not be nice or cater to them. it’s a bad comedy not a movie bashing gays. get over yourselves.
Excuse me folks, but “gay” is not a LIFESTYLE! It is a “Life”! A lifestyle is when you choose to drop out of society or dress like a goth! As far as those who claim that it is a life CHOICE, I wonder if you always make decisions concerning things of which you have absolutely NO KNOWLEDGE! If you are not gay, how could you possibly know such a thing! (By the way, being gay, I can tell you that you are wrong!) A-Hole!
That’s the what is at the heart of all this foolishness.
The inability or stubborn unwillingness to put one’s self in the shoes of the person who is the object of the harm. “Suck it up.” “It’s just a joKe.” “Don’t be a wimp, sissy, fag, gay……” Whatever the term happens to be.
It’s interesting that in this context, “The green car” The technology that just might help save the planet is referred to as”gay” The road to hell it seems is indeed paved with good but stupid intentions.
SAVE THE PLANET PRETEND YOU’RE GAY.
Just might be something to that. Be a nicer person. What could it hurt?
The bottom line is this: it’s not up to straight people to decide what is or isn’t offensive to gay people.
This is evident in any number of other situations. Men aren’t the authority on what’s offensive to women. Whites aren’t the authority on what’s offensive to minorities. And older generations shouldn’t be the authority on what’s offensive to younger generations, barring young children (which is why the MPAA is such a joke).
And to people who want to complain when others get offended, and want to justify it by saying “it’s just a word, what’s the big deal.” Well, then, if it’s just a word, and it’s so unimportant to you, why’s it so hard to stop using it? Why the fuss on the straight side?
Remember that scene in The 40 Year Old Virgin where the two losers go back and forth describing how they know each other is gay? Where was the outrage?
People hate to admit it but “gay” has another meaning in the lexicon that has nothing at all to do with demeaning homosexuality. The fact that so many people infer there own negative connotations onto what the clip tries to represent says more about the judger than the word.
I’m not offended at all by that because the character is supposed to be a bit of an idiot; however, frankly, the screenwriter could have just called the electric car lame as a babe magnet.
this is just crap, nonsense, stupidity. The world has gone gay…nuts…..stupid. Gays need to get a grip and stop the “oh, I have been insulted” crap. If they would stop with the baby whining, people might indeed stop with the “insults.” Frankly, I am sick to death with their whining and compaining. Stop with all the …gay is good, gay is right , gay is okay…and people would indeed leave you the heck alone.
wow why does everything have to be so p.c nowadays he wasn’t making fun of gay people he was simply saying that electric cars are gay…why because they ARE anyone that has a problem with that part in the movie need to build a bridge and get over it.plus if you dont like that gay slur then here’s a novel idea dont watch the damn movie
People in america are too sensitive. You have every right to voice your opinion about the joke but you also have every right to NOT see the movie. Trust me I agree that gay people should not be made fun of because of their lifestyle but people need to stop forcing their opinions on everyone. The beauty about america is that you’re able to disagree with something if you want to this is the real world an no one is going to hold your hand and baby you for everything. And hey if you’re comfortable with yourself this tiny little joke shouldn’t offend you
I find it funny that so many people are thanking Anderson Cooper for pointing this out, but say nothing about Cooper using a homosexual slur to refer to Tea Party members.
