Image Credit: Comedy CentralJon Stewart finally had his chance to unleash the power of The Daily Show on Rick Sanchez last night, and boy was it worth the wait. Stewart rejected Sanchez’s premise that he’d grown up with a silver spoon in his mouth — “the fortunate son of a single mother in the education field” — and then showed a hilariously scathing segment that compared Rick Sanchez, almost quote-for-quote, with Michael Scott, Steve Carell’s character on The Office. Hoooooly moly:
Stewart said he thought the dustup was a chance for people to get in touch with “not our dirtier, but our better Sanchezes.” It’s the quintessential Daily Show bit: Brilliantly (and duh, selectively) edited, with a series of incredulous jokes that builds to a quick and brutal climax, and ends with a gently thoughtful comment…that then swerves into straight-up bathroom humor.
Are you tapping into your better Sanchez with this, PopWatchers?

CNN’s Rick Sanchez calls Jon Stewart a ‘bigot,’ suddenly not employed at CNN anymore
Jon Stewart, David Letterman mock Rick Sanchez

Jon’s great- very funny.
I always appreciate the fact that when Jon Stewart gets interviewed anywhere, he always premises it with the fact that he is NOT a newsman or a reporter and that he works for a network with the word comedy in its title.
The point is, Jon and Rick have different jobs. Jon is a comedian and can get away with saying the absurd. Rick was an anchorman and couldn’t get away with it.
that is perfect! you got it exactly
Except that he never goes on air to call someone a bigot.
BINGO !
What bothers me is that CNN didn’t fire Sanchez for being a buffoon; they waited until he said something really distasteful. This never would have happened if network personalities were held to higher journalism standards.
Actually, it would help if they had journalism standards to begin with.
Amen Wottadoosh, a-freakin-men.
bazinga
Really like that. Yeah, Sanchez really is a buffoon!
Right CNN has very high standards. They hired one of their own Mark Spitzer (the whore monger)
LoL
Yes CNN has very high standards they hired Mark Spitzer (The Hooker Guy) LoL
After provoking CNN’s Sanchez with his degrading remarks, Stewart (if that’s his real name)?? keeps piling on the insults. What was it Rick Sanchez said “Jews run the networks” ? Did he mention The Banks, Hollywood, The Major Newspapers, or the White House? Some Oppressed minority.. LoL
….and how about that Hooker Guy Spitzer now a CNN employee. Hmm You don’t suppose Rick was right??
Hm maybe it was the fact that he called Stewart a bigot and said he was fed with a silver spoon. Or that Sanchez’s ratings were terrible. Funny how Rick didn’t think CNN was so bad when they hired him, only after his show was about to get pulled.. then he lashes out
You are as much of a walking punchline as “Dirty” Sanchez—’if that’s his reasl name’
Are you for real?
Ab – you’re a biggot
Ab is not a bigot. The networks, Hollywood et al are run by Jews but so what? It is what it is. Rick as a journalist should have kept his mouth shut and his opinions out of public radio
Proof that jews DO control all our teevee and media…lol.
Don’t you Jew sheeple get it?! Rick was right, the Jews run everything. They run Fox News, CNN, Comedy Central, Food Network, Microsoft, Apple! They’re quietly subverting the constitution, so they can get what they want and implant their Miqra law on us! Wake up America — but after 7am so you can go to work…but after that…wake up again! They are on to us…oh shi
Of course he was right. Firing him just proved it.
If Rick Sanchez had made prejudiced and racist comments towards ANY minority, he still would have been fired. Look at Don Imus.
Not Arabs or Muslims. It seems like one minority is always fair game, and they’re it right now. Total double standard.
i will hold on to my comments on most of what you have said, but Jon Stewart’s “real” name was Jon Leibowitz…looks like your on to something
*you’re
Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz I can’t believe if someone is posting on here they can’t look that up?? OR are you just wanting to post something so you don’t find out the facts.
Norman Finklestein (a Jewish professor who wrote books such as “The Holocaust Industry”, which is about the misuse of the Holocaust for financial and political gain, and “Beyond Chutzpah”, which is about the misuse of anti-Semitism by pro-Israelis against their critics) often talks of how the idea that Jews are an oppressed minority in America is laughable. Conversely, Jews are undoubtedly an oppressed minority in places such as Eastern Europe and Russia, but in America, not so much. What’s more is most non-Caucasian minorities, and many Caucasians as well, can’t tell the difference between a “white person” and a Jew, other than by their religious practices. Ironically, most all Latinos, like Rich Sanchez, excluding those who have mostly Native American ancestry (i.e. Aztec, Inca, etc..), are also considered to be European as well, being that Spain and Portugal are countries in Europe, just the same as England, and Germany.
Technically, the Caucasian race extends throughout Europe, much of Russia, Central Asia, India, the Middle-East and North Africa. There are obviously different divisions within the Caucasian race, such as Semites (i.e. Jews, Arabs), Hamites (North Africans), and Aryans (Europeans, Persians, Indians), even though the latter term has fallen out of favor due to its obvious Nazi connection and has been supplanted by the term “Indo-European” in most scientific circles. In any case, Caucasians are a rather large family of diverse peoples, who were thought to have originally descended from a tribal group that occupied the Caucuses region in Southern Russia in prehistoric times (hence the term Caucasian). These early Caucasians then spread out north into Russia, Central Asia, and Europe, and south into India, the Middle-East and North Africa. Language, more or less, is what separates the different sub-divisions of the race (and yes, European languages are directly related to the Hindi and Persian languages, believe it or not).
As for the idea that Jews control the media, it is obvious hyperbole, but there is some truth to it, as quite a few Jews occupy some very high-profile and influential jobs in the industry. This, however, is not due to a concerted global conspiracy like those perpetuated by anti-Semitic texts like “The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion”. They, like anyone else, had to work hard to attain such positions, and weren’t just handed the jobs because of their Jewish heritage.
Examples can be seen in Mort Zuckerman (owner of NY Daily News and US News & World Report), Les Moonves (President of CBS News), Jonathan Miller (CEO of AOL), Neil Shapiro (President of NBC News), Rupert Murdock (owner of News Corp), Sumner Redstone (CEO of Viacom), David Westin (President of ABC News), Michael Eisner (major owner of Walt Disney), Mel Karmazin (President of CBS), Sandy Kurshow (Chair of Fox Entertainment), Lloyd Braun (Chair of ABC Entertainment), Barry Meyer (Chair of Warner Bros.), Sherry Lansing (President of Paramount), Harvey Weinstein (CEO of Miramax), Brad Siegel (President of Turner Entertainment), Arthur Sulzberger (Publisher of NY Times, Boston Globe, other publications), etc…
That’s only a sampling, and as you can see, that kind of power and influence is nothing to scoff at. I know many non-white minorities can’t understand why it’s a slur to claim that Jews have power, as stereotypes that convey the opposite idea are often aimed at them (i.e. poor, oppressed, stupid, etc..). The reason why it’s taboo is because it was a pretext many have used, especially Europeans, throughout history to attack Jews, whether physically or politically. But as one can see with the Holocaust, if Jews really were really so powerful, they never would’ve let Hitler come to power and would’ve done something to stop 6 million of their brethren from being exterminated during the war. In truth, when one looks at the Holocaust, they will find that the vast majority of the Jews that were killed were poor Eastern Europeans who lived in tiny shtetls (i.e. Jewish communities) and ghettos and had no power or influence whatsoever. And to add, if Jews were really so powerful in today’s world, they wouldn’t be so concerned about the potential for a second Holocaust.
So I hope that helps to explain some of this.
Walter, you anti-semitic bigot – you just proved your bigotry by your entire rant much better than anyone else could have! The sad thing is that you don’t understand that your diatribe to allegedly prove that Jews are not discriminated against just shows how insidious this discrimination is – If you’ve never been called a dirty Jew – then shut the f**k up!
Nice Walter, a very good explanation and I read about all of the different Jewish entertainment people on the Israeli website. You are probably a professor or something.
I can’t understand why being Jewish is a race…not a religion. You can stop being Catholic and convert to be a Jew…so why then is that a race? I can’t quit being white and suddenly be Latino or Chinese.
This is well argued, well explicated, and a touch racially charged. While many media outlets are run by Jewish people, I think we can agree that not all Jews hold the same opinions. Rupert Murdoch, anyone? And I find it incredibly telling that people keep mentioning the banks and Hollywood. Weren’t these stereotypes put to bed in the 1920′s? Grow up, America. Jews have more power than many minorities, but we are not respected nor accepted in the mainstream. We tend to be your clowns. We are the wise fools who crack jokes rather than deciding the fate of the country.
But at the end of the day, we know more about you than you do about us. And you damn us for preferring Happy Holidays to Merry Christmas. Sigh.
Jews are not a race. They belong To a race which is shared by other cultures in the Middle East. So don’t buy into the “great Jews in history” thing. They will claim just about every great thinker as their own. Just because your mother is Jewish does not make you Jew. You have to practice Judaism and follow the culture, and even then you’re not a race. A lot of these “famous Jews”, like Einstein and Freud didn’t practice Judaism, in fact they were more than likely atheists. There are no Catholics by blood just as there are no Jews by blood. So get over it you Zionists.
Nobody said he wasn’t right. BUT…don’t say it. BTW – that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing – some people are just better at some things than others. He pulled a “gibson”. Oh well, maybe he can get one of those new “private enterprize” jobs on Havana TV. Or maybe do the “new” on SNL – he can just be himself.
Jon was great – incisive, cutting, and smart. No wonder he’s ‘the most trusted name in news’. Great for him – not-so-great for news, is it?
I fail to see why that would be “Not-so-great for the news.” It is what it is, a satire of American news media. Everyone has a preference of how they hear the news, some like it leaning to the left, some leaning to the right, and some from a comedian. Its all the same news.
No, it’s not all the same news. Both left & right-leaning programs distort – and sometimes misrepresent – the facts. Some of us like to hear actual NEWS – i.e. truth, neither left, nor right nor comic. Too bad Jon’s comic news is the closest we often get to the truth.
amen, Kelly
@Kelly
Try PBS and NPR. I know it’s a cliche for city-dwelling liberals to like NPR but it’s honestly very fact-heavy and neutral. I guess this is why some people consider it boring. For my “liberal” news I like DemocracyNow! and Rachel Maddow.
Jon Stewart (Leibowitz) is not newsman he is a comedian. Let’s get that straight, and he started the whole mess of name calling. Sanchez was right regarding who runs the Networks. Saying it may upset some people but most informed people already know that…you just can’t say it out loud. Shhh
Touchy Touchy.
After all the things Jon Stewart says about people under the guise of comedy you would think that Rick Sanchez’s comments were mild. Maybe Jon cann’t take what he dishes out.
Jon didn’t fire Sanchez. If you watch the full bit, he actually said he didn’t really mind his comments at all. AND he actually finished with a montage of Sanchez deriding hate speech… and saving the ‘racist’ card for an actual Nazi… which Stewart used to indicate where Sanchez’s true feelings lie. And that a few heat-of-the-moment remarks shouldn’t have gotten the guy fired.
But three guesses which aspect of the piece the media will focus on! (Hint: See above.)
And even most of Sanchez’s comments weren’t enough to get him fired–they would’ve gotten him bit fluff reports on CNN at 4 in the morning, but not fired. What got Jon Sanchez fired was his turning on CNN and whining about losing his anchor position on a national radio broadcast and then trying to blame it on racism.
OOPS!! That’s RICK Sanchez, not Jon Sanchez
Can you please tell me what horrible things has John Stewart said?
Aren’t we beyond ethnic finger pointing yet? It seems so immature.
When you say to his fawning fanboy masses how Jon Stewart can’t take what he dishes out, those people say it’s “just a comedy show”. When you point out that Jon Stewart is just a comedian, the same people say he is the best “journalist” on TV. You can’t have it both ways.
Open a history book and read about Will Rogers & Mark Twain–2 “entertainers” who ‘had it both ways’ and enriched American culure immeasurably
the thing about jon stewart, stephen colbert and to a lesser extent bill mahar (SP?) is that they are paid big money by their respective networks to convey their political ideas with a biting comedic sense. all comedy has its roots in the political landscape of its generation from bob hope to bob newhart to richard prior to george carlin. as much as we laugh at what they say the true fans will always believe that what they have to say reports on the world they live in. Jon Stewart’s job is a comedian but he is also paid to report on the world around him with the bias that he has based on his political views. every news program in america skews its news reports based on that networks political views. there is not and never will be impartial news, besides it is boring if there is no “agenda” to the news or so the networks would like us to believe. so i think that we should all just lighten up and realize that what Stewart is really trying to say is that even though the world around us seems to be falling apart that we just need to see things through our own eyes and realize that if we just relax and be a little more considerate of one another and put aside our differences that our lives would be a lot better. and if you dont think that is Jon Stewart’s message than i will take credit for it and just say to take it easy life is too short to get a heart attack at 40.
Jon Stewart makes me laugh daily. That’s all that matters.
Does anyone know Jon Stewart’s real name?
Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz
His real name is Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz
Jon Stewart is Jewish. We GET it, you bitter, resentful, little person. Now get off the computer before Nazi Youth Camp lunch break is over.
Everyone knows Jon Stewart’s “real” name, Ab. It’s not exactly a secret. Do you know Cher’s “real” name? Or how about 50 Cent’s? It’s called show business. Get over your prejudices.
Stewart had relentlessly made fun of Rick Sanchez before Sanchez messed up and said too much on a live radio interview. It used to be funny. But to me it is not funny to keep poking fun at a man who has lost his job, and maybe his career.
So does this mean you didn’t actually watch the bit and see where it actually (tastefully) went?
Right on Betty. Stewart should stop rubbing it in and shut up already. Enough crap has been said. Rick Sanchez’s career is finished.
How do you know his career is finished? He got fired from one job. If Don Imus’s career isn’t finished why would Sanchez’s be?
Would you expect anything less than a smarmy jew?
Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz. Why?
Hilarious. I think Stewart handled it beautifully. Just the right combination of insight and Schadenfreude.
At the end of the segment, Jon says he thinks Sanchez is probably fundamentally a nice guy and he shows a clip from his show when Sanchez called a Nazi out for his anti-semitism. He then says he thinks that’s where his true feelings lie, not with the anti-Jewish comments he made last week. This whole segment is advertised as bashing Sanchez when it is really about what the Daily Show is most passionate about – illustrating how the media twists stories and presents its anchors as uninformed (as if that is a plus)
