Last week we got a teaser trailer for the Coen brothers’ upcoming take on the classic Western True Grit. Now, the full-length theatrical trailer has been released, and I’m even more excited for this movie. We get double the running time (2:29 as opposed to 1:15), and this time we actually get to hear Matt Damon and Josh Brolin speak. Damon in particular seems like he could be a standout — he boasts the best one-liner in the trailer (“I thought you were going to say the sun was in your eyes — that is to say, your eye“). And as the confident youngster Mattie Ross, newcomer Hailee Steinfeld seems like a real find. If the movie lives up to the promise of this preview, could we have another No Country For Old Men on our hands?

if i had never seen the original i’d say this looks like it will actually turn out well, but john wayne >>>> jeff bridges. i still think i’ll see it though
Maybe I should drink a white Russian every time someone says that on one of these forums.
I was very skeptical about this remake. But now I’m very excited. I look forward to seeing this, instead of dreading it!
I wish I could find decent grits outside the south.
Looks pretty awesome, no easy task remaking a John Wayne film.
Very good song selection, setting this to Johnny Cash’s cover(?) of Run On. Fits perfectly.
I really like Jeff Bridges, but he’s no John Wayne, whose performance in the original is letter perfect. I won’t be watching the remake, although having Matt Damon instead of Glen Campbell in the role of the Texas Ranger is an improvement.
Jeff Bridges is no John Wayne, true, but he is perfect when it comes to the character as written in the book. I am SO excited about this film.
With all due respect to The Duke and his fans, but Bridges is a vastly, vastly superior actor. The reason he was hired for the role, is because no other actor can so effortlessly make a character feel so lived in.
Actually, I’m from northeast Oklahoma (the portion of former Indian Territory described in the book)and my first reaction was how pitch perfect Jeff Bridges’ accent and cadence sound! John Wayne didn’t sound like anyone from around these parts in the 1969 version. I’m really looking forward to seeing this.
Love the Coens, love this trailer.
Does anyone know who sings the music in that trailer? Is it Johnny Cash?
The song is God’s Gonna Cut You Down by Johnny Cash.
Great song
Nearly 2 hours since the article was posted and not one person has posted how they met their wealthy boyfriend on an internet dating site? Maybe EW is finally doing its job on the message boards? In any event, saw the trailer yesterday and it looks great. John Wayne played John Wayne in the original – not much of a stretch – but all 3 principal players (Bridges, Damon and Brolin) looked really terrific in the trailer.
looks fantastic. and JB has played more than one character in his carrer, unlike Wayne. many of Wayne’s flix were pure hokum.
great spelling there Mr. Chips. career.
I saw the original True Grit at a drive in theater with my family, I was just 8 and I bought into the story hook line and eye patch. I agree it wasn’t a great movie but it is a good movie and was indeed a part only JW could bring to life as he did. I also saw the sequel with Katherine Hepburn an Wayne and was grossly disappointed, not nearly as disappointed as I was with the botched feature starring Warren Oates as Cogburn. That said JW was a movie star who could act and Bridges is a fine actor who,sad as it is will never be a movie star. I will see this movie and probably more than once, great cast, great story, great direction and production. How can it lose?
This looks like it’s going to be great. I was very skeptical at first. To remake one of John Wayne’s best is heresy to me but the Coens seem have the casting just right. I like Jeff Bridges take on Rooster Cogburn. I know it’s just a trailer but I liked it.
I think it looks fabulous.
And just an fyi for all the “Bridges isn’t John Wayne!” naysayers. The Coens have said explicitly that they’re not remarking the first film, but rather going off the novel, from which the Wayne film deviated quite a bit.
I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man, who plays the Robert Duval character
