Steve Carell on the end of Michael Scott: 'The Office' is not a fairy tale

the-office-carellImage Credit: Chris Haston/NBCThe end is nigh for Michael Scott on The Office, but exactly what the end holds for the beloved TV boss is still up in the air. If Steve Carell has his way, we won’t be seeing the beloved TV boss drive his Sebring into the Scranton sunset.

At Comedy Central’s Night of Too Many Stars benefit concert for Autism education this weekend, Carell told EW that the show recently wrapped shooting on the season’s 10th episode, but the writers have “nothing specific” written for his character’s final act.

“I’m sort of torn. Part of me wants him to end up happy, but another, more realistic side of me knows that the show is essentially a documentary. It’s not a fairy tale. So I think it would be interesting if it’s a qualified happiness, if he does find happiness [at all],” he said.

Should The Office get renewed for another season, Carell said he hasn’t given any thought to a possible guest return to the show. Hey, as long as Michael doesn’t die an ironic death by rabies or in a random fire ball, we’ll be happy. He can guarantee that, right?

“Yes, that’s exactly how he’s going to die. You just gave me the idea. He’s going to die in a fire ball, an unexplained fire ball,” Carell said.

What do you say, PopWatchers? What’s your dream ending for Michael Scott?

I hear what Carell is saying.

However, in recent seasons the show has definitely veered away from the more realistic early seasons. (I still love the show, but it’s the truth.)

So that being said, any ending that doesn’t have him winding up with Holly would be completely unacceptable.

    • tracy bluth

I agree about the recent seasons. Also, look at the original Office. As realistic as that was, we still got our great Tim and Dawn fairy tale kiss.

    • Allison

I agree. I think with the way the show is headed, Michael needs up with Holly. And a guest appearance would be nice once in a while.

      • tracy bluth

Amy Ryan said she’ll be back later this season…rejoice!

      • Brian

Yeah but Holly won’t be happy about it.

    • Mole

I almost just want Michael to p*** off the docu crew so much that they stop following him after 7 years (remember, they did follow Jim to Stamford, so just leaving wouldn’t cut it). Besides, too much resolution would deter from the inevitable “everyone sees the documentary” ending, especially if Michael is present in like 90 percent of the footage.

    • Brooke

Ditto, big fat wedding to Holly…..she is his soul mate.

  • Damian

    Eloping with Ryan and Jim.

    • tracy bluth

Officially adopting Ryan as his son.

  • Sandrita

LOL… love the “ironic death by rabies” line!

    • Mr. Holloway

There’s a great fake PSA for rabies on the season 4 DVD. (“Rabies kills 4,000 people every 1,000 years.”)

      • tracy bluth

That reminds me of Anchorman (what doesn’t?)- “60% of the time it works every time”.

      • Mr. Holloway

“In the movies, when you get bitten by an animal, you get a cool superpower. In real life, the only power you get, is the power to die.”

(They packed a lot of funny into that short PSA.)

  • tracy bluth

He HAS to end up with Holly. I haven’t wanted two characters to end up together this badly since Sawyer and Juliet. It kind of seems like they’re trying to go back to “Jerk Michael” this season. Who else really doesn’t like Erin?

    • Jill

Finally someone else who doesn’t like Erin! I can’t explain why but that character just gets on my nerves.
And yes, Michael should drive up to Nashua, interrupt Holly’s wedding and whisk her away.

      • tracy bluth

For me it’s that I love Andy so much. I was so happy when he seemed to get a cute, funny love interest. Then she turned out to be annoying, a bit creepy, and way too dumb.

      • Emily

Ikr I really don’t like Erin! She was cute and quirky in season 5 And early season 6 but now she’s just weird. And I think it would be funny if the show ended with every stupid thing Dwight ever said or done (step on a mine, the computers are alive, et cetera) coming true! Lol that’s be hilarious. Or if Dwight and Jim became co-managers.

    • Mr. Holloway

I liked her better when she was more sweetly naive and less a step or two above mentally challenged. (Though I admit I laughed my a$$ off at her throwing away her disposable camera last week.)

    • Chappel

I think they are trying too hard to make her the Not-Pam.

    • dean white

I love Erin and I hope that Pam gets to keep her new job as Office Manager! I do wish that Andy and Erin would get together although I am getting to where that tall guy doesn’t get on my nerves so much.

  • [PFFT]

Michael Scott steps on a land mine like Dwight said

    • ahannan

or penetrated by a icicle since he likle to stand directly underneath them, as dwight theorised. lol

  • Chappel

Maybe this “documentary” that they’ve been filming for the last few years will finally be finished and broadcast and that will lead to events that will dictate Mr. Scott’s exit. I love the show but I would love to see them handle this like the original series did. The filmmakers invaded the office, shot a lot of footage and then released it to the public. I can see Michael Scott, like David Brent, suddenly seeing himself as a celebrity and trying to turn his quasi fame into a career. Maybe they could team up as a duo where they would spend most of their time arguing over who got top billing.

  • Semaphore

The show gave up realism ages ago, why suddenly be realistic and have a bleak ending for Michael? I think it should end with him and Jan back together somehow.

    • Mr. Holloway

But Michael + Jan = bleak ending, no? (Especially after the way she treated him when we last saw her in the Baby Shower episode.)

      • Semaphore

If she is unchanged then I’d agree but they could redeem her if they wanted to. Maybe the kid was his all along and she was lying about the sperm bank. It would take more than that but it could be done.

      • Brian

I’m much happier thinking her baby is (accidentally) Kevin’s–watch the deleted scenes from that episode: Kevin donated sperm to the same bank Jan went to. LOL

    • Mr. Holloway

      Brian-
I remember that! The deleted scenes on “The Office” DVDs are usually fantastic.

  • Daddyb

They could do a whole “Mrs Robinson” thing with Pam’s Mom and then Michael runs off to interrupt Holly’s wedding (in his Sebring, with the top down, just like Dustin Hoffman in his Alpha) and the last shot of the season is them exiting the church hand-in-hand, together and jumping onto a school bus filled with Scott’s tots.

  • Molly

Was that photo of Michael with Toby and a drawing the last scene of last week’s episode? My dvr cut it off. Can anyone tell me what he drew? Thanks. :o )

    • Amy

He was drawing pictures of people in the office, and the one he showed Toby (and the camera) is of Dwight & Angela.

      • Molly

        Thanks!

  • Katy

Simply that he is fired and ends up with Holly. Or the show just ends, which is really what should happen.

    • The Truth

      Agreed!

  • The Truth

“another, more realistic side of me knows that the show is essentially a documentary. It’s not a fairy tale.”
This show has been ALL fairy tale since season 3.

  • graeme

He should go on vacation, and lose his passport or something and be stuck in the foreign land.

  • Ross

After reading an IGN article, i would love a really dark ending with Michael being the Scranton Strangler. Though how would you have a humorous show after that. Still it would make me happy

  • Todd

I also wish the show would just end. Maybe everyone gets fired, IDK. But I don’t think the show should continue w/o Michael (and I’m not a huge fan of Carrell outside the Office). Jan and Holly both return this season (hurray!) so we’ll see what happens. I LOVED Michael and Jan,but no way they get back together.

  • Cheri

He and Ryan finally “come out” to eachother.

    • tracy bluth

No way, Ryan and Kelly are soul mates!!!!!

      • Cheri

Ryan only puts up with Kelly. He’s always treated her like dirt and uses her and she’s so desperate to get married.
