'Glee' duets: Yay for more 'Chorus Line'

Glee-AuditionImage Credit: Adam Rose/FoxTeaser audio clips from next week’s Glee episode “Duets” have surfaced, and they sound pretty damn awesome. (This post contains very minor spoilers from here on out.) Take a listen:

The pairings include Rachel and Finn singing “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” which will always belong to Lily and Marshal from HIMYM for me, but okay; Rachel and Kurt on a mash-up of “Get Happy” and “Happy Days are Here Again”; Sam and Quinn on “Lucky”‘; Mercedes and Santana destroying “River Deep, Mountain High”; and most spectacularly, Mike and Tina on “Sing” from A Chorus Line. There’s also a Kurt solo on “Le Jazz Hot” from Victor Victoria.

I am stoked to finally get some backstory on Mike “Other Asian” Chang, especially because “Sing” is such a hilarious (and notoriously difficult) song. It’s not the first time Glee has used music from that show, either. A version of “Montage Pt. 1 (Hello 12, Hello 13, Hello Love)” was recorded but cut from the episode “Hell-O,” and the piano intro for it played in “The Power of Madonna”:

This season’s premiere also featured Rachel singing “What I Did For Love,” although for my money, that song was needlessly shoved at the end of a packed episode, and it didn’t really get its due:

So yay for “Sing.” What duet are you most looking forward to, PopWatchers?

I love them all, but Don’t Go Breaking My Heart is my fave. Lucky sounds amazing too…I am so happy with them all, really.

    • Jackie

I was so hoping that someday they’d do “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”! I’d rather have it be a big ensemble number with several couples (like the end of “Ella Enchanted”), but it will make me happy to see Finn and Rachel do this :)

      • Emily

I loved the end of Ella Enchanted! Good pull! :)

    • Gillian

OMG Are Finn and Rachel doing Don’t Go Breaking My Heart? It’s one of the best duets ever! The songs for this episode all sound fabulous.

  • Sam

It’s a sad world where this show gets the highest ratings on television, and Lone Star gets cancelled.

    • sen

I think the millions of people who didn’t watch lone star would disagree with you.

    • Hil

That was the show about a con man who has two wives, wasn’t it? Uhmm, no thank you. I have enough grief with my real life. I like Glee because it makes me laugh and for an hour I can forget my troubles.

    • b

Go complain on the articles for DWTS or Gossip Girl or Two and a Half Men… Y’know, the shows that were actually COMPETING with Lone Star in its time spot and taking its viewers, as opposed to this show that was showing commercials for Lone Star b/c it’s on the same network!

No mention that the “mash-up” of Get Happy was done 45 years ago by Barbra and Judy?

    • Rob

Seriously! Glee also stole the Burt Bacharach medley from Streisand in season one. I sure hope they’re paying royalties for all this. I know from watching the credits that they’re not making any upfront acknowledgments.

      • Mole

They can’t NOT be paying royalties. That’s why they don’t get access to certain songs/artists; they need permission.

      • SC

Er, that’s not “stealing”, that’s covering; it’s a rather common practice. Hence, here they’re homaging a famous duet between two music icons.

      • fiona

Wow, Rob, you’ve really cracked this open. Nobody in the music industry would ever (a) have heard of people covering songs and arrangements by other artists or (b) checking to see if hugely popular versions of these songs were correctly licensed for royalty. You have totally changed the music industry as we know it. They’re gonna be so glad you came along.

  • Flip

I thought Glee was going to be doing less musical numbers per episode this season. 4 is plenty.

  • Shamus N.

Really glad to see Tina and Mike sing together, although I thought “Sing” was going to be the Sesame Street song, which also would have been appropriate since Jenna was actually on Sesame Street.

  • selma

is that me or other asian is actually a pretty good singer

    • Shep

      Don’t think he’s a sings. He’s a fab dancer though.

      • Danny McKenzie

        No he actually sings :)
All the actors had to as part of their audition.

    • Karl

Who cares about his voice when he has a body like THAT?

  • Laurie

I love Rachel and Kurt’s duet.

  • Anne

Le Jazz Hot sounds awesome =) And I love Lea’s version of What I Did For Love. Agree it didn’t get its due in the episode.

    • Laurie

Because they tried to introduce too many characters at once and the episode felt rushed.

    • Maggie

I agree about “What I Did for Love”, it’s such a fabulous (I saw the show in New York and it’s a showstopper) and it did feel super rushed. I’m loving listening to Rachel and Jesse doing “Hello Love” song from ACL, it’s great to hear two broadway trained actors doing it, shame it didn’t make it into the episode. “Sing!” is hilarious, much funnier than it sounds when you see it in person, I think it’s going to be awesome.

  • Liz

I love Harry Shum Jr! Glad to see he’s finally getting some recognition on the show and no longer delegated to background dancer. Can’t wait to see his duet with Tina… they are too cute for words. Yay for the asians! (from an asian) :)

  • SC

Amber Riley and Naya Rivera sound amazing on “River Deep, Mountain High”.

Though I wonder exactly what leads to Mercedes and Santana singing together; you’d think they’d want to sing with Kurt and Brit, respectively.

    • Emily

They always sing with Kurt and Brit–mixing it up is a good thing!

      • SC

For the show, sure. But in-universe, Santana and Mercedes don’t like each other.

    • laylagalise

I was also wondering why Mercedes and Santana are always singing together. Also, Santana has been featured on more songs this season than Mercedes even though Amber Riley has the better singing voice (Naya’s is great, too, but she’s just not on the same level as Amber and Lea).

  • Al

    Just made my day!

  • Nic

I love Finn and Rachel, so I’m really looking forward to DGBMH. Really excited for Lucky, as well. I think Chord and Dianna have the perfect voices for it.

  • anna

I like them all but I’m a little annoyed by Quinn and Sam singing “Lucky” considering they barely know each other. Finn and Rachel should be singing that one. That being said, I had really missed hearing Cory and Lea sing together, so I’m really glad they got a duet in this episode!

  • Maria

I really like Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. It’s such a upbeat happy song for a couple. I love Finn and Rachel so I’ll probably love in on the show. Is that the new kid singing Lucky with Quinn? Where’s Puck in this??

  • Cath

No, I want Puck to be singing Lucky with Quinn!!!

    • Margo

      agreed!
