ABC Family cancels 'Huge': Are you sad to see it go?

hugePrepare yourselves for a, yes, huge disappointment: News broke today that ABC Family has axed Huge, the series following teens sent to a summer weight-loss camp, after just one season. The drama was a victim to declining ratings, especially when compared to the success of the network’s other summer launches, Melissa & Joey and Pretty Little Liars.

In a statement to EW, the show’s creators, mother-daughter team Winnie Holzman and Savannah Dooley, said: “First and foremost, we want to thank everyone who embraced Huge and supported it. While it’s disappointing not to be able to go forward with the characters we love so much and had so many plans for, we’re deeply grateful to have had this opportunity. Our goal was and is to create TV of depth and complexity that inspires people to think and feel. We believe we accomplished that with Huge and we can’t wait to do it again.”

How do you guys feel about the news? In a spate of recent cancellations, are you sad to see this one go?

I enjoyed the show even though David Hasslehoff’s daughter couldn’t do extreme emotions very well at all. It was a really good story that I would have liked to see continue.

  • Mean Girls fan

I really enjoyed this show. What a shame!

I loved this show. I am such a fan of Nikki Blonksy. I am sad (and angry) to hear that it has been cancelled so soon.

  • Rebecca

I rarely give up on shows just in case I regret it later (example, PRex) but I gave up on this show in the middle of ep 3. Glad(?) to see I wasn’t the only one. So boring!

This was a wonderful show with characters you don’t usually see. I’m sure it was far superior to Melissa and Joey. There was zero promotion which certainly didn’t help. Paul Dooley, Gina Torres, great actors and believable plots about teens dealing with real issues about fitting it. Not cookie cutter washboard abs adults posing as teens.

Oh and Hasselhoff’s daughter was fine. She was withdrawn as a reaction to her over the top stuck in adolescence mother.

    • Tookie

Totally agree with you, Bibi. It was a really good show and I will miss it.

  • Shannon

Boo! Of course they cancel the only show
I like on their sad little channel :(

Even though I never watched Huge, I’m shocked that it didn’t get renewed. It was lauded by TV critics and teens alike, yet that wasn’t enough for a second season? With so many vapid teen shows somehow surviving the airwaves (ahem, CW), how did a show that treated plus size girls with dignity get lost in the shuffle over ABC Family’s other programs? With all of the harassment and belittling real life plus size girls receive almost constantly, I feel that this show needed to stay on the air to contrast the size 2 actresses that fill much of primetime and cable. It just doesn’t make much sense besides impatient executives who didn’t really give it a chance.

To the fans of Huge, my condolences.

I just had to respond to your lovely comment. I am sooo sad to this day that my favorite show got cancelled :(

  • Todd

Aw, I really dug this show. Plus, we didn’t get any resolution with any of the characters. I’m definitely sad about this. It was a good little show.

  • Scott

dang. that really sux. i was so into this show. why do quirky shows not really last all that long: pushing daisies, freaks and geeks. does tv have to be all about ratings, why not quality???

    • ks

because they don’t follow the tried and true sitcom format CSI, L&O or dopey laugh track shows. Networks honestley think we do not like anything that is different.
      boo on ABC

  • Caitie F

This was one of the only good ABC Family shows – so sad to see it go!

i liked the shows aspirations, but it really wasn’t very well done. blame not so great writing acting and directing for this show’s demise. obviously many were rooting for this show based on the fact that it wasnt cookie cutter… i tried to watch this show and just couldn’t get interested. it was ambitious but just didn’t work. Huge… RIP.

Another good show on ABC Family Cancelled. Joining Kyle Xy and 10 Things I Hate About now

    • Dee

Yeah, still bitter they cancelled 10 Things I Hate About You. that was an awesome show

      • Boo

Me too. Still missing it on Mondays…

      • Ian

OMG me too!! I absolutely loved “10 Things.” It had wit and substance, and some really cute and quirky actors. And a shirtless Ethan Peck! To be so young and such a man!. Woof! But I digress. Was a good show that deserved many seasons.

  • melissa

I am so sad they cancelled this show. The characters were complex and very real. Even though I’m no longer a teen I could relate to just about every character. Boo, ABC Family!

  • jennifer

I, too, am sad to see it go. It was a show that I could watch with my 13 year old and we both would enjoy it. I thought it was well done and had some good and very real messages.

  • MKS

That definitely blows. I thought this was a great summer show! I really loved most of the characters and was really looking forward to how things would play out, such as Alastair’s sexual identity and Willie’s secret of being the rich daughter of a fitness empire.

  • Annette

It got canceled because nobody want’s to watch a show about fat people! It’s a huge disappointment indeed!

    • Liz

Annette you are probably a huge disappointment.

    • HoneyB

Have to agree. I don’t need to watch a show that glorifies obesity. I see the show live on the streets.
