'The Social Network': Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin also wanted to direct

aaron-sorkinImage Credit: Jonathan Fickies/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesWhen Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) was writing the screenplay for The Social Network, he already had a director in mind for the job: himself. “For a couple of years, I had been looking for something manageable enough for me to direct,” says the writer. “This felt like that movie.”

But Sorkin had to shelve his plans when Sony decided to offer the job to David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). “I got called by [Sony exec] Amy Pascal, who said, ‘I’m gonna send you a script. And you have to read it right away, because if you don’t do it, the writer wants to direct it — and we’re gonna let him,'” recalls Fincher. “I read it and thought, this is too good not to say yes. Then I called Aaron and said, ‘I hope you’ll forgive me, but I really liked it and I’d really like to do it.'”

According to Sorkin, there was no apology necessary. “I have never been so happy not to get a job in my life,” he says. “Fincher hit it out of the park.”

Aaron Sorkin is fantastic, but I have to say I’m glad he didn’t direct this film. David Fincher has a style and mood about the way he directs that I just love. He is the main reason that I became intrigued by the film when it was first announced that he would direct. And I should add that I was also intrigued when it was announced that Aaron Sorkin would write it.

Same with me. I was one of those people who thought that a movie about facebook was going to be so stupid, but then I found out Fincher was directing it and knew then that it was going to be so much more.
