Image Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty ImagesA John Stamos-produced Beach Boys musical movie is one step closer to production. Twentieth Century Fox won a bidding war — the mind reels — for a Mamma Mia!-style movie set to the music of the Beach Boys. Stamos, Craig Zadan, and Neil Meron are producing, and Susannah Grant is set to write the script, according to Variety.
I’d be astonished if the movie is set somewhere other than California, and I guess if you’re going to turn someone’s catalog into a narrative, it might as well be a band with hundreds of songs that cover a staggering range of emotions. Pet Sounds alone could support a narrative arc. The question of whether it should support one, however, remains.
Do you feel so broke up, PopWatchers? Or has everyone gone surfing? And, Full House fans, remember this?

Why does “the mind reel?” Is it so surprising that such a project would attract interest? The Beach Boys created some of the greatest music ever recorded. Props to Stamos for championing their wonderful music over the years. The TV movie he was involved with several years ago was quite good.
HAVE MERCY!
haha, that made me laugh out loud!!
Yay Uncle Jesse!
Terrible idea!
I think it’s a good idea, we already have musicals based on the music of Queen, Billy Joel, Elvis, Green Day and ABBA, why not The Beach Boys?
I look forward to seeing it! We’ll have fun, fun, fun till my daddy takes the T-bird away.
Stamos actually produced a Beach Boys biopic on tv like ten years ago. Unfortunately, it revealed his bias as a good friend of Mike Love. There are two sides to the Beach Boys story, and I personally favor the Brian Wilson version. Anyone interested should read “Catch a Wave,” by Peter Ames Carlin. It gives a pretty good sense of the big picture.
Given Stamos’ bias, I hope the movie features a story entirely separate from the actual history of the Beach Boys.
If it’s the “Mamma Mia” model, it should be its own unique story making use of Beach Boys songs, not be about the Beach Boys like “Jersey Boys” was about the Four Seasons. I think a BB “Mamma Mia” would be fun, but a BB “Jersey Boys” would not.
I’m bugged at my old man could be a play in it’s own right… I am under the impression that this will be a fictionalized story set to the Beach Boys songs. It depends on your own POV if this is a good or bad thing.
Cant say I’ll want to see this.
John has done Beach Boys songs in some shape or form ever since he was on the TV show Full House in the ’80s. I’m sure that this was a dream project he planned for years of a Beach Boys movie that finally got the green light. Now we can really see the ups and downs and the in fighting of the band beyond those sunny pop hits as part of the musical with a Mamma Mia-styled approach!
