'No Ordinary Family' premieres tonight: Will you be watching?

No-Ordinary-FamilyShield fans, rejoice! Michael Chiklis is back on the small screen in ABC’s new series No Ordinary Family, which centers on a stereotypically busy American family who inherit superpowers after a freak accident. We talked to the show’s executive producer about choosing powers, nabbing Chiklis, and what we can expect for the premiere tonight (8 p.m.):

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tell us about the show?
GREG BERLANTI: It’s a real blending of a family show with a high concept show. Hopefully it has all the heart and warmth and intelligence and wit of a family show with all the bells and whistles of a high concept, action drama that a whole family can watch together. They can cheer together but also address issues they’ll want to talk about.

How did you decide on superhero powers?
We think of the powers as a metaphor — that idea of a family or a person feeling different or less special than those around them. They get the opportunity to repair the things they feel are lacking in their lives. You look at the powers as kind of fixing the family in a fun, big way, but also the show focuses on the repairs that need to happen within the family as well. READ FULL STORY »

Rachel Bilson signs onto Josh Schwartz-produced romantic comedy TV series

Rachel-BilsonHer character arc on How I Met Your Mother might have ended, but Rachel Bilson might be headed back to the small screen: Deadline announced today that the actress is re-teaming with her O.C. producer Josh Schwartz for an NBC rom-com pilot. Though details are scant at the moment, the series is reportedly titled Ghost Angeles and is about an L.A. woman (Bilson) who can see dead people.

In the meantime, Bilson is keeping herself quite the busy bee; she has signed on to the indie comedy BFF Baby an will star opposite Kate Bosworth and Krysten Ritter, who penned the script.

Ghost Angeles makes me ponder what other O.C. pairings might work. Perhaps a Benjamin McKenzie-Adam Brody buddy cop show? What about a Peter Gallagher-Mischa Barton melodrama?

What do you guys think? Does Ghost Angeles sound promising? How do you feel about the Bilson-Schwartz reunion?

Crazy news of the day: Vanilla Ice loses his pet kangaroo

Robert-Van-WinkleImage Credit: Larry Marano/Getty ImagesLast night, ’80s rapper Vanilla Ice sat on Jay Leno’s couch for an appearance on The Tonight Show. That, surprisingly, is not the shocking bit. (The former rapper was there to promote his new home renovation DIY show, The Vanilla Ice Project.) During the interview, Vanilla Ice shared a story of when he lost his pet kangaroo. Yes, PopWatchers, you read that correctly: Vanilla Ice has a pet kangaroo who sometimes likes to go rogue.

Vanilla Ice doesn’t strike me as the type of guy who owns a pet kangaroo, although, I’ve never actually heard of anyone owning one, so I should apologize for my unfair blanket stereotypes. (I didn’t think you could actually own a pet kangaroo, but if anything, I have now been inspired to look into owning my dream pet — a penguin.) Apparently, Vanilla Ice owns a veritable menagerie of exotic pets — his kangaroo ran off for two weeks with its buddy, Vanilla Ice’s pet goat. Personally, I would’ve loved to see a horned goat leading a kangaroo around town, especially if that animal parade was followed by a search party led by Vanilla Ice (ideally riding around in a convertible, blasting “Ice Ice Baby”). Sally Menke dies at 56: Remembering Tarantino's longtime editor

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged: , , ,

Sally-MenkeImage Credit: Jeff Vespa/WireImage.com; Linda R. ChenBeing Quentin Tarantino’s film editor couldn’t have been easy work. There were the long, unexplained gaps between projects, the fact that her boss was a movie-mad perfectionist who always had the ideal version of his film already playing inside his own head, and the intimidating challenge that all of his movies hinged on cutting back and forth between time, place, and characters — imagine trying to keep all of the mobius-strip plotlines of Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction straight. But Tarantino was so devoted to Sally Menke and such a fan of her work that he never employed anyone else to cut his films. And he was such a fan of her as a person that he routinely assembled “Hi Sally” reels (included on the extras of many of his DVDs) where the cast and crew would begin each take by looking into the camera and giving her a shout-out she’d see months later to cheer her up in the editing room and push her to forge ahead. Along with Martin Scorsese and his longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker, it’s hard to imagine a more collaborative director/editor duo than Tarantino and Menke — a partnership that came to a sudden and unexpected end earlier today when the news hit that Menke, 56, was found dead near L.A.’s Griffith Park. Menke had apparently gone hiking in the morning heat with her dog and was found by searchers in Beachwood Canyon after her friends reported to police that she’d failed to come home. Her Labrador retriever was reportedly found alive beside her.

Menke graduated from the NYU film program and served as an editor on 1990′s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. There were other films after that, but her career really took off  when she partnered with Tarantino, an encyclopedic video store clerk-turned-auteur, on 1992′s Reservoir Dogs. The brilliant independent film about a band of nameless career criminals who assemble for a botched heist and reassemble in a warehouse trying to figure out how it all went wrong and whether or not they had a rat in their midst, made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival that year, turning Tarantino’s into one of the most electrifying debuts Hollywood had ever witnessed. There was no arguing that he was a genius, but it was Menke’s editing of the low-budget film that made it so unique and revolutionary. READ FULL STORY »

'Hawaii Five-0' skin watch: Episode 2 gratuitous shots low

hawaii-five-0Image Credit: Kim: Mario Perez/CBSLast night’s episode of Hawaii Five-0 showed remarkable restraint when you consider that Alex O’Loughlin’s Steve McGarrett went for a swim in the morning montage (weekly occurrence, please, watch the clip below) and Grace Park’s Kono Kalakaua landed in a swimming pool while fighting a cyber terrorist (guest star Ivana Milicevic). The camera could’ve followed his walk out of the water and into his house, and she could’ve been wearing something other than a blue henley, jeans, and flats when she hit the water. It’s refreshing to watch a woman dressed like that kick ass. She doesn’t need to be wearing leather pants, a leather bustier, or a leather jacket to prove she’s tough. Plus, it’s too hot to.

Other notes on Week 2:

• It’s apparently also too hot for McGarrett’s team to wear gloves at a crime scene.

• You’d think O’Loughlin would’ve looked the sexiest in a bulletproof vest. because he wore a black tee that showed off his biceps underneath. But it was definitely Daniel Dae Kim. Chin Ho Kelly should always wear that light, white, long-sleeved henley just in case he needs to put on the vest. It’s a great neckline for him, and the fabric pulls tight on his arms when he opens a door holding a shotgun. (Watch the clip below.)

• The writers should continue to use Hawaii’s tourist population for comedic effect. Last night, the guys, fully armed, had to ride a hotel elevator with a family. (Watch the clip below.) READ FULL STORY »

'Paranormal Activity 2': Paramount's super-creepy viral marketing campaign

Well played, Paramount. Yesterday, I found a small padded envelope in my EW mailbox. It was hand-addressed to me in black sharpie. The return address read: 40 University Dr, Rindge, NH 03461. Hmm… No one I know lives there. When I opened it, there was nothing but an HP flash drive inside. No note, no explanation, nothing. Uh, creepy. No thanks.

Well, it turns out the drive contains a scene from next month’s Paranormal Activity 2. It’s one of seven new videos making the Internet rounds today as part of Paramount’s viral marketing campaign for the sequel, which the studio is keeping under extremely tight wraps. The videos (all embedded below) shed a flicker of light on the actual plot — and possibly confirm my worst fears that it’s all about a poor, helpless baby who gets tormented by a demon. How am I going to make it through this movie?

Oh, and that return address? According to Google maps, it’s Franklin Pierce University. Something tells me that’s no coincidence. I guess we’re dealing with a college-educated demon here.

Check out the videos and tell me what you think it all means. Do we have the makings of a plot here? READ FULL STORY »

Michelle Rodriguez to kick ass in 'Citizen Jane'? Kinda, sorta.

citizen-jane-posterAt the Austin Fantastic Fest, a short campy trailer of Michelle Rodriguez growling and shooting a machine gun on an island of fire gun played to the appreciative audience. (See it embedded after the jump.) The trailer, and the accompanying posters of a black clad Rodriguez holding a gun, promised a remake of Orson Welles’ 1941 classic Citizen Kane. In Citizen Jane, with an announced release date of Sept. 5, 2011, Rodriguez would play a woman looking to avenge the murders of her parents. Various websites wondered if this was a spoof or a camp delight worth getting ready for.

It turns out that Austin-based filmmaker Aaron Burns conceived of the Citizen Jane push at Fastastic Fest as a mean to grassroots promote his upcoming feature debut Blacktino, the story of an overweight half-black, half-Hispanic nerd struggling to find his place in predominantly white Austin high school starring Danny Trejo, Jeff Fahey, and Daryl Sabara. “In Blacktino,” Burns explains by email, “the main character watches a trailer for a film called Citizen Jane, which features Michelle doing even more ridiculously awesome things… Michelle came down for the last day of production and gave me almost enough badass footage to make a full movie.”

Now that the Citizen Jane trailer is out in the world, Burns is having conversations about that actual possibility (as well as the possibility that he is a blasphemer of the first degree). READ FULL STORY »
