'True Blood' most gay-friendly show on TV, officially

true-blood-jesus-lafayetteImage Credit: HBOTrue Blood is the most inclusive show on TV with six regular or recurring lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender characters, according to GLAAD’s annual “Where We Are on TV” study. HBO features the greatest number of LGBT characters on cable with a total of 10 for the 2010-11 season. ABC leads the broadcast networks with 11 LGBT characters out of 152 total series regular characters (7.2 percent). (CBS is in last place with just one regular.) ABC Family also finishes near the top of the scorecard with seven regular LGBT characters, which ties it with Showtime.

Check out the complete lists of LGBT characters on broadcast (a number that has increased to 3.9 percent, but still doesn’t include a black character — get on that, Glee) and on cable. For people who love charts, GLAAD breaks the numbers down further and includes stats on racial diversity on scripted broadcast series. NBC leads the way there with 32 percent of regular characters being people of color. ABC (26 percent), Fox (24 percent), CBS (18 percent), and The CW (10 percent) follow. For the first time, the study also looked at the number of characters with disabilities. According to GLAAD, slightly more than 12 percent of U.S. citizens reported an apparent disability in the US Census Bureau’s 2008 American Community Survey. This season, only six series regular characters on the broadcast networks, or 1 percent, are people with disabilities.

What was Bristol Palin doing in an Alaska bar with Mark Ballas?

One of the curses of having a famous last name (and being a contestant on Dancing With the Stars) is that nothing you do goes unnoticed. That includes going to a bar in Alaska when you’re well under the legal drinking age. According to the Associated Press, 19-year-old Bristol Palin was spotted at a drinking establishment in downtown Anchorage last Friday where she had gone to see her on-air dancing partner Mark Ballas perform. Technically, Palin could only be there if she was accompanied by a parent, spouse, or legal guardian over 21. And now a state investigator is hot on the case to determine whether the headline-grabbing daughter of Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was there legally. The investigation will hinge on whether she was there to eat (legal) or enjoy the show with or without a cocktail (not legal). Yes, this is what it’s come to. The Alaska Dispatch reported yesterday that a state Alcohol and Control Board investigator visited the establishment, asking for copies of raw video shot at Ballas’ performance. The request was denied. Someone needs to call Woodward and Bernstein, stat!

Letterman discusses Oprah feud with Jon Stewart

For anyone who’s been following the ongoingly frosty and seemingly endless feud between David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey, last night’s Late Show provided new insight into their long-standing Cold War. Chatting with guest Jon Stewart, Letterman revealed that the iciness dates back much further than Letterman’s notorious (and notoriously awkward) joke while hosting the 1995 Academy Award telecast: “Oprah, Uma…Uma, Oprah”. In fact, Letterman told Stewart — and the insomniacs watching at home — that the real cause of the rift was a practical joke Letterman played on Winfrey long before he laid his Oscars egg.

Turns out that Letterman and his then-girlfriend, Regina Lasko, found themselves having lunch in the same restaurant as Oprah and Steadman while on vacation. As a gag, Letterman told the waiter that Winfrey’s table was picking up their check. Apparently, Winfrey didn’t find this as hilarious as Letterman did. READ FULL STORY »

The inevitable 'Avatar' porn lacks zingy name

You know the rules: If you can imagine it, there’s porn of it. I’m just surprised this one took so long — but I guess if James Cameron can take a decade to make it, Hustler can take a few months. Anyway, here it is, a safe-for-work trailer for the Avatar porn. You did this to yourselves, nerds: READ FULL STORY »

Mindy Kaling unveils new 'Office' webisodes on Leno: The horror!

Mindy Kaling dropped by the Tonight Show Tuesday night to talk about horror movies and preview the new cluster of Office webisodes. While it’d be pretty tough to top “Subtle Sexuality” in my heart, the new, horror-filled “The Third Floor” just might do it. It’s “from the mind of Ryan Howard” after all, from whence brilliance comes. Watch the video below (“Third Floor” trailer at 0:53): READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' countdown: It's Britney, bitch

Filed under: Glee, TV and tagged: ,

Glee-Ep202Image Credit: Adam Rose/FoxTonight’s episode of Glee has a lot to live up to, after last season’s Madge-ical “The Power of Madonna,” which set the standard for theme episodes. However, I’m fully confident that tonight’s “Britney/Brittany” will be equally, if not more, enjoyable thanks to the show’s secret ingredient: Heather Morris. Tonight we’ll be getting more time with our favorite cheerleader Brittany as she tackles some of the Princess of Pop’s most iconic songs, so, of course, hilarity — and some fierce dance moves — will ensue.

But wait, there’s more! John Stamos drops by as Dr. Carl, a dentist dating Emma, who will become a rival to Will, either in music or hygiene. Are you keeping your fingers crossed that Uncle Jesse will sing tonight?

What are you most excited for, PopWatchers? Are you hoping for more from Kurt and Mercedes this week? After you’ve watched the episode, head back here for your snap judgments on everything from songs to styles to Sue-isms. Then, be sure to check out Tim Stack’s full recap at midnight. (UPDATE: Click here for the full recap of Glee‘s “Britney/Brittany” episode.)

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess bring 'One Day' to the big screen

British-based romantic comedies rank pretty high on my list of Things That I Will Never Stop Loving Ever. (So if you’re not a fan of Love Actually or Notting Hill, it’s been nice knowing you.) So learning that Focus Features was adapting David Nicholls’ novel One Day just about made my head explode with happiness. (To be fair, One Day is more of a dramedy, as it can turn you into a blubbering mess quite easily). It’s a brilliantly funny and sweet story about two friends, told over a 20-year period. Production recently wrapped on the film, and USA Today has a first look at Lone Scherfig’s adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.

Emma Morley is an aspiring writer from Northern England, convinced she’s destined to a life of mediocrity, while Dexter Mayhew is a spoiled, handsome playboy, who dabbles in TV hosting gigs. The story begins on graduation night at Edinburgh University, and follows the two through years of relationships, jobs, and different cities. Nicholls catches up with Emma and Dexter one day each year (the same as the day they first spent together), July 15, or St. Swithin’s Day, which is similar to Groundhog Day in the States.

Anne Hathaway manages to ooze likability in everything from The Devil Wears Prada, Rachel Getting Married, and even quick cameos on The Rachel Zoe Project. READ FULL STORY »
