America Ferrera talks 'Independent Lens' hosting gig and potential for an 'Ugly Betty' movie
Image Credit: Francois Durand/Getty ImagesLast week, PBS revealed that Ugly Betty star America Ferrera would take over hosting duties for the upcoming ninth season of their documentary series Independent Lens, which premieres Oct. 19. It’s certainly an interesting choice, considering her success with mass-appeal projects like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Betty, but it makes sense for the star, considering her love for documentaries. Lately, she’s been traveling the world promoting the documentary The Dry Land — about soldiers back from tours in Iraq who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder — that she produced alongside her fiancé Ryan Piers Williams. EW took a few minutes of Ferrera’s time to chat about why she wanted to host Independent Lens, her upcoming nuptials, and what the likelihood is for Ugly Betty movie in the future.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Hosting PBS’ documentary series Independent Lens is an interesting step to take in your career. What made you want to do it, or how did it come together?
AMERICA FERRERA: They approached me about hosting it a couple of months ago, and I just loved the whole concept. I have been a part of many independent projects, and I feel kinship with independent filmmakers, and I love documentaries. I feel that this is a really wonderful thing, that PBS is making documentaries that most people would probably never have a chance to see in a regular theater — in a lot of towns in the country there aren’t independent theaters. I think it’s really awesome that someone can turn on their television and watch a documentary that they probably would never have had access to otherwise, and they’re all really wonderful, unique, interesting, quirky, and some really powerful stories that just help give a bigger perspective of all the different stories in our world. I was honored to be asked to join the really great people that they’ve had hosting in the past, like Susan Sarandon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Terrence Howard. READ FULL STORY »
TNT's 'HawthoRNe' renewed for season 3
TNT has ordered a third season of the Jada Pinkett Smith hospital drama HawthoRNe, the network confirms. I randomly fast-forwarded through the season 2 finale On Demand last weekend — I’m a sucker for a hospital having to be evacuated, on the day of its big inspection, when electrical problems stop elevators from working, so people say things like, “Tom, we can’t open her head right here in the hallway.” (And they didn’t do it. Firefighters finally reached them right as someone went looking for the drill. Disappointing.) The episode felt like a series finale to me, with Chief Nursing Officer Christina (Pinkett Smith) and Dr. Tom (Michael Vartan) reuniting after the incident.
Tom turns a celebratory hug into a kiss.
Tom: I’m sorry, that was inappropriate.
Christina: No, Tom. You know I love you, right?
Tom: Yeah.
Christina: I need you.
Tom: I can’t be myself without you in my life, Christina. I’m so tired of playing these games and hurting each other. [That's a wrap-up line, right?]
Christina: Okay then, let’s stop.
Tom: Okay.
Christina: Okay.
Tom: I love you.
Christina: I love you.
They hug again.
Christina: I’m pregnant.
Okay, maybe that leaves them some place to go. What are you HawthoRNe fans hoping to see in season 3? (Are there HawthoRNe fans?)
'America's Got Talent': Who deserves to win?
To quote America’s Got Talent‘s eloquent host Nick Cannon, “It’s the finals man!” Yes, it’s come to this, PopWatchers. Four acts are left in the running, each hoping for a career on the Vegas strip and beyond. Piers did his best Simon Cowell impression, crushing the dreams of Prince Poppycock (who he claimed he”blew it”) and Fighting Gravity, while praising Jackie Evancho as the greatest thing since DVR. But the Prince didn’t seem discouraged. In a post-show interview with People, he described the dreaded “X” he received from Piers as simply a means to create tension, calling the judge a “big ninny.” Point Poppycock?
Prince Poppycock’s performance was very straightforward, so I have to agree with Piers’ assessment that it was less fun than his previous performances. Will America still embrace a serious Poppycock? And If you take away his elaborate costumes and makeup, is he as good of a singer as Jackie Evancho? READ FULL STORY »
'My Boys': Let's toast the canceled series.
Image Credit: Danny Feld/TBSWell, send me straight to Crowley’s, PopWatchers, because I need a drink. Why? Because not only am I lamenting my decision to tape the VMAs over the My Boys season finale Sunday (curse you, ever-addictive time-slot competitor Mad Men!), but now my grief has been amplified upon finding out it was a series finale I missed. Yep, TBS has decided to cancel its charming laugher My Boys.
Like a baseball metaphor from PJ (Jordana Spiro), however, we saw it coming. TBS buried My Boys by airing it in the competitive 10 p.m. Sunday slot. It’s a shame, especially considering how season 4 truly hit it out of the park. (Sorry.) Talk about a swing and a miss, TBS! (Sorry. Yet again.)
Unlike many sitcoms whose glory days occurred in the first few seasons on air (Friends, How I Met Your Mother, etc.), My Boys took a while to mature — but then did it beautifully. In 2006, very few of us watched as an awkward, offbeat 30 minutes of comedy premiered on TBS, inspiring a love-it-or-hate-it attitude from TV watchers. But, in the four years since, My Boys had truly blossomed into a laugh-out-loud comedy on par with the best and highest-rated sitcoms on television. It was funnier than Two and a Half Men. More relatable than Sex and the City. And, somehow, even sweeter than The Big Bang Theory. READ FULL STORY »
RZA trades in Method Man for Cinderella Man, snagging Russell Crowe for kung fu film
Image Credit: Valery Hache/Getty ImagesProtect ya neck! That is, from the karate chops of Russell Crowe, who will be starring in an unlikely collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan member RZA in the latter’s upcoming kung fu movie The Man With the Iron Fist, the rapper’s manager told EW. RZA is set to direct and apparently has been getting help from chop-sockey enthusiast Quentin Tarantino. And although it may seem that way, Crowe and RZA’s partnership doesn’t come from out of the blue: They co-starred in Ridley Scott’s American Gangster and will be sharing the screen again in the upcoming The Next Three Days.
Personally, I’m super-psyched for this. Not only does the movie promise to be 36 chambers full of high-flying craziness, but it would be good to see Crowe having some fun away from those brown, green, and more brown historical movies and gravitas-laden prestige pieces he’s been making. And it can’t hurt to have another rapper directing, if only to flesh out the dubious pantheon that up to now consists only of The Players Club.
Crowe Rules Everything Around Me, but what about you, PopWatchers? Is this collaboration just crazy enough to work, or is it too crazy? Not crazy enough? All I know is if it’s half as great as this, I’ll be happy.
