'Top Chef: Just Desserts': The five most ridiculous shots from Bravo's low-rent Willy Wonka promo

TOP-CHEF-JUST-DESSERTSImage Credit: Scott Schafer/BravoWe’ve spent much of today tracking the Top Chef: Just Desserts truck in NYC, which has been serving up free ice cream, cupcakes, truffles, and “compost cookies” to regular pedestrians and important bloggers. The thing’s made at least three stops within a four-block radius of the EW office since this morning. (I had a huge scare around 12:30 when the truck was pulling away — only to discover it was just rolling down the street to 30 Rock. Almost had to go Pretty Woman on them. “Big mistake. Big. Huge! I have to go blogging now…”)

Archana Ram will be recapping tonight’s premiere later on, but for now, I could not resist sharing some choice moments from the low-rent Willy Wonka promo…. READ FULL STORY »

Excess Hollywood: Kevin James schools as martial arts fighter

excess-hollywood

  • Former mall cop Kevin James will topline an untitled comedy for Sony about a physics teacher who becomes a martial arts fighter to save the music program at his school. Surely, he plans on blinding his competition with science. [Variety]
  • Olivia Wilde is set to star alongside Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman in The Change Up, which follows a married man (Bateman) who trades bodies with his lazy best friend (Reynolds). Who wants to find out how many licks it takes to get to Reynolds’ Jason Bateman center? [Deadline]
  • The Weinstein Co. has nabbed rights to Submarine, which centers on a teenage boy aiming to lose his virginity and keep his parents from divorcing. Let’s hope he doesn’t mix up these priorities. [Variety]
  • Media Rights Capital and M. Night Shyamalan announced in a press release that 2011′s Reincarnate — a supernatural thriller directed by Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) — will be the second installment in The Night Chronicles trilogy.
  • Phoenix Pictures is set to produce Absolutely Anything, directed by Terry Jones. The film will star John Oliver, and will feature, among other things, aliens and a talking dog who I can only hope is shifty-eyed. [Deadline]
  • Malin Akerman is the latest to join Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston in Wanderlust, a film about a couple who decides to escape New York. It’s a comedy, but I can’t figure out what’s funny about two hours of Holland Tunnel traffic. [Variety]

Danielle Staub to host her own show on WealthTV

Danielle-StaubIf you watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey, you know that even the classiest events have the tendency to end in table-flipping or hair-pulling. Former cast member Danielle Staub’s newest reality show, however, will assure people that not all events in the Garden State end in drama. Staub has begun filming Social, a new reality show set to air on Wealth TV, available to HDTV customers. The network confirmed Staub’s role in the show: “It’s a phenomenal show and people are excited to have Danielle,” said Cary Sandoval, creator and executive producer.

Sandoval describes the show as a re-imagined Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, with Staub tackling the role of Robin Leach by traveling to the homes of fabulous friends and attending events ranging from birthday parties to black tie affairs. While her New Jersey home provides easy access to Manhattan and the Hamptons, Sandoval left the idea of traveling across the country, and even overseas, open. “[We want to] incorporate the fact that she’s an international socialite,” he said.

Despite being portrayed as the villain (or victim, depending what side you’re on) during her two seasons on RHONJ, there will be no high school behavior or mean girls mentalities on this new show. “Danielle is an absolute sweetheart. They’re going to see the show as a polar opposite to what she was portraying on Real Housewives,” Sandoval said. READ FULL STORY »

'The Tourist' trailer: 'You look ravenous.'

The trailer for December’s Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie spy thriller, The Tourist, has hit the Internets. And, boy, does it look gooood. (Video is embedded below.) Yes, Angie does seem to be working a bizarre accent, but that’s okay. (Mercifully, she doesn’t sound anything like Olympias from Alexander.) From the jazzy score during the Strangers on a Train-ish kick-off, to the glory of the Venetian cityscape, to the artful dodging of bullets as Depp and Jolie speedboat through canals, I am sold. Dialogue sounds promising, too. “You look ravenous,” Johnny says to Angie. “Do you mean ravishing?” she replies. Oh, yes.

Here ’tis. Are you as psyched as I am for The Tourist? READ FULL STORY »

'Bachelor Pad': Jake taped his appearance just hours before his interview with Vienna

vienna-jake Rose lovers, have I got a story for you. As some of you may know, I was none too pleased to see that ABC had granted Jake “Quivering Jaw of Rage” Pavelka more airtime on Monday’s finale of Bachelor Pad (he served as a judge during the Dancing with the Stars-themed challenge). Well, it has come to my attention — via a very polite email from an ABC bigwig — that Jake taped the Bachelor Pad gig mere hours before his explosive confrontation with Vienna, and that ABC actually considered not airing the uncomfortably hostile interview. (Oh, the horror!) Here’s what really went down:

“It was so funny you would ask about us having Jake judge the dance competition after the debacle of the interview with Vienna. The funny thing about that is we shot the dancing competition the SAME night.  The dancing competition was shot at around 9pm and the interview was well after midnight. After the interview (and Jake) went completely off the rails we decided not to air the interview, knowing that he was going to be appearing in Bachelor Pad. When all the stories came out speculating he raised his fist to Vienna we had to air the interview just to put that to rest and just cut Jake (and the rest of the fabulous judges) WAY back.”

Talk about the most dramatic night… EVER! Do I still wish that ABC had placed a big blue dot over Jake’s face and distorted his voice to sound like the Zingbot so that fame-seeking weasel did not get the benefit of more airtime? Sure. But it certainly does make me feel better to know that ABC didn’t invite Jake to visit Bachelor Pad after he went all American Psycho on Vienna. What about you, rose lovers?

DVD rental stores with tanning beds. Now you can RMT! (Rent Movie, Tan)

video-store-tanningImage Credit: David Friedman/Getty ImagesIn the days of Netflix, Apple TV, and Redbox, brick and mortar DVD rental shops are slowly becoming a thing of the past. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that 33 percent of independently owned video rental stores boast tanning beds in order to boost revenue and remain in business. One third! That is an absolutely horrifying statistic.

I am completely blindsided by this strange pairing: tanning beds and DVD rentals. I can understand a couple of inspired shop owners creating this as a gimmick to attract customers, especially in an area near the Jersey Shore house, but one third of all video rental shop owners doing this? When did I miss the memo that this was the next biggest business venture? I guarantee that if I had pitched an idea like this in my college entrepreneurship class, my professor would’ve stared at me blankly and told me to go back to the drawing board. And more importantly, where are these stores? If more than 3,500 video rental stores have tanning beds, they must exist in places nowhere near The Situation’s orange abs.

Instead of installing some tanning beds to boost revenue, this past winter, my hometown’s mom and pop-owned DVD rental store opened a liquor store on the side. READ FULL STORY »

Jane Lynch thanks Ellen for paving the way for gays

PopWatch never complains when two of the funniest ladies around get together and gab for our viewing pleasure. So we’re all for carving out some time today to watch Jane Lynch’s visit to the Ellen show. Lynch, who, of course, just won an Emmy for her fantabulous work on Glee, told Ellen DeGeneres that the talk-show host’s courageous decision to come out in the ’90s made it easier for her to be open about her own sexuality. “That’s because of people like you,” Lynch says in a preview clip (embedded below). “You were at the height of your fame and you came out. That just blazed the trail for me. It really did. It made it so much easier for me, what you did.” Applause! Applause!

What else can we thank Ellen for? Personally, I’d like to thank her for rocking all those black-and-white striped shirts so stylishly. It’s a fetish we share. So Ellen, can I borrow the cute top you’re wearing on the show today? I love the tie front. READ FULL STORY »

Blasphemous Lunchtime Poll: Big Bird vs. Snuffy

Snuffy-vs-Big-BirdImage Credit: Everett Collection (2)The Sesame Street Twitter feed has become my go-to web savior during the darkest moments of my most dismal days. Today’s tweet nearly sent me over the edge. “Big Bird: Even though Snuffy’s a Snuffleupagus and I’m a bird, we’re best friends. Friends don’t always have to be the same!” Bird is right. Time to rebuild some of your former friendships with weirdos. But first, you should vote.

Fun fact from EW.com photo editor Jef Cifra-Castro: “There’s no photos of Snuffy NOT hugging Big Bird!” Okay I have to go to hell now. See you there/bye.

'American Idol': 'Urgency is not there' to begin filming with judges' panel, says source

american-idol-tableImage Credit: F Micelotta/Getty ImagesIn the latest round of frantic media reports about who’ll be seated at the judges’ table for American Idol‘s 10th season, there’s been frequent speculation that the show’s producers are scrambling to get their panel finalized and start shooting audition rounds before the month is over. But that’s simply not the case, says a source close to the show. “The urgency is not there. It only exists in the press,” says the Idol insider. “People need to just chill.”

In seasons past, says my source, producers had to consider Simon Cowell’s British TV commitments — specifically his judging duties on The X Factor — when scheduling the callback rounds where the next generation of Kelly Clarksons and David Cooks try out in front of Idol‘s celebrity judges. With Cowell out of the mix, that timetable pressure has all but evaporated. READ FULL STORY »
