'It's Always Sunny' season 6 premiere: What to expect this season

sunny-in-phillyImage Credit: Patrick McElhenney/FXIt’s almost fall, PopWatchers. The days are getting shorter, but that only means things are about to get sunnier on television. Especially tonight, when the sixth season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia premieres on FX at 10 p.m. Shortly before the debut of tonight’s episode — which tackles same-sex marriage — cast member (and 2010 EWwy Award winner) Charlie Day rang up EW to talk about where the outlandish comedy is heading. “[We] deal more with the characters and their emotions and what they’re going through in their lives,” Day says. “In some ways there are less hot-button issues than in past seasons. But there’s not an episode that won’t touch a funny bone.” Here are five things to look forward to this season on Sunny:

  • Dennis finally settles down: Well, not for long. “Dennis Reynolds actually gets married on a whim to his high school sweetheart,” Day says. “And then there’s an episode where Dennis gets divorced.” So looks like the creator of the D.E.N.N.I.S. system will separate entirely after all.
  • Dee’s having a baby: READ FULL STORY »

Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale spar in 'The Fighter' trailer

Anybody here want to go 10 rounds with Mark Wahlberg? Didn’t think so. But we can’t wait to step into the ring with him in The Fighter, the new David O. Russell film based on the true comeback story of boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward. The movie’s first trailer just hit the Interwebs, and from the looks of it, this might be a serious Oscar contender: award show favorites Wahlberg, Christian Bale (as his brother), and Amy Adams (as Wahlberg’s love interest) all seem to be in top form, and everyone knows the Academy loves itself an underdog in the ring (see: Rocky, Million Dollar Baby, The Wrestler, etc.). See for yourself in the clip below. READ FULL STORY »

J.J. Abrams island hops to 'Alcatraz' pilot

Categories: J. J. Abrams, Television

It hasn’t even been six months since Lost was laid to rest, and already J.J. Abrams is heading to another island. According to Variety, Fox has given a pilot commitment to a pitch from Abrams for Alcatraz, a new show based on a script by Lost writer Elizabeth Sarnoff. No plot details have been announced, but as previously reported by EW’s Lynette Rice, the action will take place in the legendary San Francisco prison that housed such colorfully named bad guys as George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Alvin “Creepy Karpis” Karpavicz — not to mention Al Capone himself.

Of course, Alcatraz has been a favorite setting for movies and TV shows ever since it closed in 1963: Clint Eastwood wanted off in 1979′s Escape from Alcatraz; Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage wanted on in 1996′s The Rock. But with Abrams at the helm, we’ve got a hunch this iteration will put a new twist on the old island. Mysterious patterns in the Bay Area, anyone? Or how about some deep religious symbolism among the inmates? Or even just some chunky knit sweaters and a prison-cell love triangle? Too much?

What kind of spin do you think Abrams & Co. will put on Alcatraz, PopWatchers?

Jeff Probst blogs the 'Survivor: Nicaragua' premiere

survivorImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBSHello Survivor fans! Hello Jimmy Johnson!! Hello Wednesday night!!

Episode one of our 21st season is complete and it turns out Wendy’s husband was right. More on that later…

I’m very curious to see how the audience responds to having Jimmy Johnson on the show. If you’re reading this blog, you’re probably old enough to know that Jimmy is one of the most successful football coaches in the history of the game — both college and the NFL. Even if you’re younger, but still a football fan, then you no doubt know him as one of the most colorful Pro football analysts on television. I’m happy to say that I now know him as a Survivor contestant.

Jimmy was not recruited as some sort of a “stunt casting” idea. Jimmy applied…on his own… three times to be on the show. As he said himself, he hasn’t missed a second of the show… ever. The first two times he applied he didn’t pass his physical so he was turned down. But this time he not only passed his physical, he made it on the show!

The very first thing I noticed was the jealousy that Marty and Jimmy T have for Coach Jimmy. READ FULL STORY »

'Top Chef Just Desserts' premiere recap: Chocolate should be decadent, but what about sparkly?

Top-Chef-Desserts_320.jpg Image Credit: Diane Bondareff/BravoI am, what you may call, a dessert fiend. I’ve had sweets at some of the finest foodie spots, like wd~50, Georges at the Cove, and Jean Georges’ now-closed Vong’s Thai Kitchen. At the same time, I appreciate the beauty of a big sloppy sundae, and the Charlie Brown brownie a la mode at Clark’s Diner in Evanston, Ill., is still my favorite dessert of all time. And though its culinary cred may be suspect to some, I’m a firm believer in Applebee’s motto that “Happiness begins with dessert.”

Oh, and I also had two root canals by the time I was 12, so there.

But I still wasn’t sure how I’d feel about a Top Chef spin-off that focused on the pastry world. Spin-offs almost always pale in comparison to the shows that spawn them, and in the worst cases, can come off as cheesy copies. Thankfully for my sweet tooth and me, Top Chef Just Desserts had all the fun, creativity and crazy characters you’d see on (a good season of) Top Chef, without feeling like a stale knockoff.

This time around, the cheftestants are vying for a feature in Food & Wine, a showcase at the Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival, a Buick Regal, and $100,000 courtesy of Godiva. But something struck me about this group of bakers. The cheftestants here reminded me more of Project Runway‘s colorful casts, and that’s not just because of disco glitter. Let’s see exactly who we’re dealing with: READ FULL STORY »

'Top Chef' finale recap: And the winner is...

top-chef-finaleImage Credit: Joan Leong/BravoWell, Top Chef fans, we’ve finally reached the end of another season. I know many of you have bemoaned how much the last 13 weeks dragged on, but on some levels, it flew by for me. Without a deep connection to the cheftestants, and with Tiffany (AKA the only hope for a happy ending) booted just before the finale, I was freed up from the usual anxiety that comes from having a strong rooting interest. Stir in a plethora of unanswered questions (mail-order bride or not?), and I found there was even less reason to emotionally invest.

But, hey, just because the menu might not have your favorite dish doesn’t mean you don’t eat, right? So let’s dig in. We picked things up right where last week left off, with the remaining three — Kevin, Ed and Angelo — getting called back to the judges’ table to find out what they’d be cooking for the MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THEIR LIVES. (Not to diminish first prize, but at this point, is losing really that big a deal? Won’t all three experience some degree of fame/notoriety/increased restaurant business anyway?)

Speaking of fame, past winners Ilan Hall, Hung Huynh, and Michael Voltaggio showed up to aid the top three with the MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THEIR LIVES. (I could’ve lived without Ilan, but Hung and Mike, thank you for giving me a reason to pay attention.) READ FULL STORY »

'Survivor: Nicaragua': And the first person voted out is...

Another season of Survivor is underway, and if the move back to Wednesday nights didn’t shake things up enough, we also got our initial look at the show’s first true celebrity contestant, one badass looking immunity idol, and one embarrassingly titled Medallion of…seriously, I can’t even say it without feeling ridiculous. If you’ve already watched tonight’s season premiere, read on after the jump to sound off about what happened and who was kicked off. READ FULL STORY »
